Four arrested for aiding Maoist group in Latehar

police arrested four people accused of harbouring, sheltering, and providing food and other logistics to the Maoist group of Manohar Ganjhu and his accomplices. They have been identified as Raj Kumar Bhagat (38), Arun Ganjhu (34), Chhatis Ganjhu (40), and Gobind Ganjhu (34).

He also doubled up as a night guard. Latehar SP Gaurav said, "He helped Maoists to do a recce of the CMPDI's survey of coal exploration."They were caught on Thursday. On Friday, all were remanded to judicial custody. They have been booked under section 17 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act, police said. Police also recovered a looted cell phone.These four used to pass on information about police movements to Ganjhu and his team. Gaurav said, "On May 3, Ganjhu and his team set afire eight vehicles, including two drilling machines engaged by the CMPDI at Torisote under Chandwa police station limits."CMPDI was conducting a survey of coal exploration in the area. Maoists wanted extortion from the company, amounting to Rs 2 lakh for each drilling for coal exploration. As the CMPDI refused to comply with the Maoists, it suffered the loss of eight vehicles and machines.Sources said the extortion demand was put forward to the CMPDI last year as well but police weren't informed. The PSU also continued surveying coal exploration at Torisote without informing the nearest police station, police said, adding that the Maoists took full advantage of it and caused heavy destruction of property. An elderly couple from BTM Layout was subjected to a harrowing two-and-a-half-month ordeal by fraudsters impersonating law enforcement officials, who virtually 'arrested' them and extorted Rs.4.79 crore. The victim, a retired engineer who had returned to Bengaluru after working in Nigeria for 31 years, was targeted by scammers posing as bank representatives and investigating victim, Manjunath, who now resides in BTM Layout with his wife, was contacted in March by fraudsters who claimed that his credit card limit was overdue. Gaining his trust, they extracted his bank details and later escalated the threat by sending him a forged warrant alleging illegal money transfers through his account. They falsely claimed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the CBI had registered a case against him and threatened to jail him in Tihar unless he paid up. The scammers extorted the money in stages and even demanded property documents when Manjunath expressed his inability to pay further. Distressed by continuous harassment, he filed a complaint with the Southeast Division's CEN Police police arrested two accused Narayan Singh Chaudhary and Ishwar Singh in Hyderabad. Interrogation revealed that a portion of the scammed money was spent in a Sri Lankan casino. Police have frozen Rs.1.60 crore in Chaudhary's account and additional funds in Singh's account. Two suspects, Ishwar Singh and Narayan Singh Chaudhary, were arrested in to police, Rs.10 lakh was traced to Ishwar Singh's account and Rs.1.8 lakh to Narayan Singh's. The probe revealed that the duo had visited a casino in Sri Lanka, where some of the scammed money was funneled.

BENGALURU: Two men who extorted Rs 4.79 crore from an elderly couple under the guise of a 'digital arrest' have been arrested by the South East Division CEN police. The accused have been identified as Ishwar Singh and Narayan Singh Chaudhary. The victims, a couple residing in JP Nagar, believed they were under digital arrest for nearly three months, from March 19 to May 15. The complainant, Manjunath (77), had worked as an engineer in Nigeria for 31 years. Both his children live separately after their marriages. The accused contacted the victims posing as bank officials, claiming that their credit card bills were overdue and that their bank accounts were linked to money laundering cases. They also sent a fake arrest warrant, stating that cases had been filed against them by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The victims even received video calls from the accused, who posed as officers from the agencies. During this period, the victims transferred Rs 10 lakh to Ishwar's account and another Rs 1.8 crore to Narayan's account. Police tracked the duo using their bank details. 'The elderly couple were rescued based on a tip-off, even though they were residing in the South Division. The accused were arrested after a lookout notice was issued against them following information that they were at a casino in Sri Lanka. The victims had not informed their children about the digital arrest. The case is still under investigation, and more details have to be collected from the accused,' said Sarah Fathima, DCP (South East). The accused had reportedly spent the extorted money at a casino in Sri Lanka. The complaint was filed in May. Police said the duo had also obtained copies of the victims' property documents.
