Modified Your Bullet To Make This Kind Of Sound? Over 4,000 Riders Fined In Mumbai

News1816 hours ago
In 2024, Mumbai Traffic Police cracked down on noisy bikes, issuing 4,189 e-challans and collecting fines worth Rs 41.89 lakh, highlighting the gravity of the problem
In Mumbai, residents are grappling with sleepless nights and rising accidents as motorcycles fitted with silencers that sound like firecrackers continue to roar through the streets despite repeated police warnings.
In 2024, the Mumbai Traffic Police launched a special campaign to address this issue, targeting two-wheeler riders who flouted the rules. During the campaign, a total of 4,189 e-challans were issued, and fines amounting to Rs 41,89,000 were collected, underscoring the severity of the problem.
Police took strict action against offenders, seizing and crushing thousands of silencers that mimic firecracker sounds under a road roller to prevent their reuse. In cases where fines remained unpaid, court notices were issued directly to the vehicle owners.
Under the Motor Vehicles Act 198, vehicle modifications that violate regulations attract a minimum fine of Rs 1000, and in some cases, criminal charges are filed.
What Makes The Danger Worse
The noise from such silencers is not just irritating but also harmful to health. Constant exposure puts strain on the ears, with the elderly and children most affected. The risk of accidents rises sharply when riders combine these silencers with stunts or high-speed turns. Such bikes are often seen in large numbers during festival rallies, where the deafening noise troubles citizens and causes other drivers to lose balance on the road.
Noisy bikes tearing through busy Mumbai areas late at night or early in the morning are instantly recognizable. They cause disturbed sleep, distract students, and add to the discomfort of patients. The problem is felt most acutely in sensitive zones such as hospitals, schools, and residential colonies.
Ongoing Police Crackdown
The Mumbai Police continue to act against violators, with no exemptions for those using such silencers for style or hobby. The police have indicated plans to intensify their efforts in the future.
What Citizens Can Do
Citizens are encouraged to report sightings of two-wheelers with 'firecracker' silencers to the traffic police and adhere to vehicle regulations themselves. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, illegal modifications result in fines, and severe cases may lead to criminal charges.

US Revokes Over 6,000 Student Visas In 2025 Amid Stricter Immigration Policies

Last Updated: The revoked visas reportedly involve students who violated US laws or engaged in activities deemed a threat to national security. The US State Department has revoked more than 6,000 student visas so far this year as part of a broader immigration enforcement campaign under the Trump administration. A State Department official confirmed the numbers on Monday, as reported by Fox News Digital, marking a significant escalation in visa enforcement targeting international students. The move is part of President Trump's wider agenda to impose stricter visa regulations and tighten immigration policies. The revoked visas reportedly involve students who violated US laws or engaged in activities deemed a threat to national security. According to the State Department official, between 200 and 300 student visa holders were stripped of their documentation due to alleged involvement in terrorism-related activities. These revocations fall under provisions in the Immigration and Nationality Act, which makes any foreign national inadmissible to the US for links to terrorism or extremist behaviour. However, the majority of visa cancellations were due to criminal offences or immigration violations. The official stated that approximately 4,000-6,000 revocations were issued to individuals who had 'broken the law," including cases involving assault, burglary, and driving under the influence (DUI). Other reasons included visa overstays and violations of terms of stay. In addition to revocations, the Trump administration has also taken steps to make it harder for international students to gain admission to US universities. In recent months, federal scrutiny has increased around campus activism, particularly protests related to the Israel-Gaza conflict. The administration alleges that such demonstrations have often taken an antisemitic tone, creating a hostile environment for Jewish students and faculty. One notable case occurred in March 2025, when Rumeysa Ozturk, a PhD student at Tufts University, had her visa cancelled and was detained by federal agents. Ozturk was placed in ICE detention before a federal judge ordered her release in May. Several universities, particularly Ivy League institutions like Harvard University, Brown University, University of California, and University of Pennsylvania, have come under fire from the Trump administration for allegedly tolerating antisemitic activity on campus. Officials argue that university leadership has failed to protect Jewish students, accusing them of siding with pro-Palestinian protestors. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Fourth arrest made in Ghaziabad in case of teenage girl's trafficking

New Delhi: Delhi Police has arrested the fourth suspect in a human trafficking case involving a 13-year-old girl who was forcibly married and later rescued from Shamli, Uttar Pradesh. The accused, identified as Ramanjot Singh, 24, a resident of Ghaziabad, is a cyber café owner who allegedly created a fake Aadhaar card listing the minor's age as 19. Deputy commissioner of police (northwest) Bhisham Singh said Ramanjot operated a cyber café on the ground floor of his residence. During interrogation, it was revealed that he actively assisted the other accused by preparing and sharing the forged Aadhaar card to falsely portray the girl as an adult, facilitating her illegal marriage and trafficking. "The mobile phone used to create and share the fake Aadhaar card was recovered from his possession. He used a PDF editor application to manipulate the document," the DCP added. The girl later tried to call her grandmother from someone's phone and managed to give a missed call. The family provided the phone number to the police, who traced and rescued her from Shamli on Aug 16. Police earlier arrested three men in connection with the case — the man she was forcibly married to and two others who facilitated the marriage. The accused were identified as Vikas, 20, Ashu, 55, and the 40-year-old man. Investigations revealed that the marriage took place secretly at a house in west Delhi's Moti Nagar. "The marriage happened in secret; only the family of the 40-year-old man and the two accused were present. They also recorded videos of the ceremony. The girl was threatened with dire consequences if she objected to the marriage," an investigator said. He further added that some of the accused's roles is under investigation to determine whether he was part of a human trafficking racket involved in supplying minor girls as domestic workers. "We have found that one of them was frequently visiting remote areas in Odisha. We are now verifying whether girls were lured from there," a police official said.
