India tour of England: England vs India Test series: Karun Nair talks about his comeback trail

The Hindu5 hours ago

On comeback trail, Karun Nair says the presence of childhood companions KL Rahul and Prasidh Krishna in the Indian dressing room adds a layer of comfort as he seeks to capitalise on the chance that came his way after eight years.
The five-match Test series against England, starting in Leeds on Friday (June 20, 2025), is an opportunity for Karun to cement his place in the side, years after becoming only the second Indian batter to score a triple century in Test cricket.
"I try to keep it very simple, always think about the positive, have certain goals in mind, visualize things and have real belief in what you visualize.
"Playing alongside Rahul and Prasidh is also a very comforting factor. We've played cricket for so many years since probably we were young kids and grew up together," Karun told BCCI in a video posted on its website.
Karun and Rahul, both 33, have played age-group cricket together and have been close friends since then.
"Life has come a full circle because I went out of the team in England and now I am coming back into the team in England. It's been a while and I embrace that." He was dropped from the Indian team in 2017.
"My first thought when I woke up (after being dropped) was I want to play Test cricket, I want to play for India again. That's probably what kept me going, kept me hungry and was the driving force to train and practice everyday.
"I had a goal to play Test cricket again. Everyday, every morning I used to wake up thinking what should I do to reach that goal. Never losing that belief and having that target to reach was something that helped me," he added.
In the 2024–25 domestic season, Karun amassed 863 runs in nine matches at an average of 54, helping Vidarbha clinch their third Ranji Trophy title.
The season revived his Test career as he made his return to the Indian Test side for the tour of England.
"Mentally I am more patient and I am more forgiving of myself. I have learnt to enjoy small things a little more and also not trying to be not someone that I am not. I have tried to keep it very simple. I always think about positives, have certain goals in mind, visualise things and have real belief," Karun said.
"Feeling honoured to wear this jersey and honour to be representing my country." Karun said the realisation of making the Indian team again came to him when he met the touring group.
"When I saw everyone for the first time that time I realised I am finally in the team, till then it was a wait for me to start feeling I have made it again," he said.
"It's been a few years, I used to watch everyone on TV and to be back again in this dressing room feels amazing." "I enjoy the feeling with everyone, enjoy the feeling of wearing this jersey, just going out there and having fun with everyone in the group and trying our best to win games for our country."

Sai Sudharsan Makes Test Debut for India in First Test vs England at Headingley

B. Sai Sudharsan will make his Test debut after being named in India's playing XI for the first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, starting June 20 at Headingley. Cheteshwar Pujara presented Sudharsan with his Test cap ahead of the toss. With three ODI appearances and one T20I already under his belt, his Test debut completes the full set of international formats. Sudharsan has been a consistent force in white-ball cricket. He was the leading run-scorer in IPL 2025, winning the Orange Cap and cementing his reputation as one of India's brightest batting prospects. While his first-class average stands at a modest 39.93 from 49 innings, the selectors have backed his potential and long-term upside. That said, the last Indian top-order batter to have a sub-40 first-class average at the time of Test debut was Wookeri Raman, against West Indies in Chennai in 1987/88. What works in Sudharsan's favour is familiarity with English conditions — he featured in a few County Championship matches for Surrey during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. In five innings for Surrey, he averaged 35, including a century against Nottinghamshire last year — a knock that hinted at his adaptability in seaming conditions. Related Topics Sai Sudharsan

KL Rahul's 'unfair treatment' triggers debate; 'Come on, it's been a decade'; Manjrekar disagrees; 'Nobody would dare…'

KL Rahul triggered a bit of a debate between former India cricketers Deep Dasgupta and Sanjay Manjrekar. The debate wasn't heated, nor did it stretch, but Manjrekar and Dasgupta had different things to say about how Rahul's international career – especially Test – had shaped up since his debut 11 years ago. Rahul has played 58 Tests for India, but with 3257 runs, averages 33.57, a figure considered a tad poor given someone of his experience. Be it due to injury or form, Rahul has been in and out of the team way too many times, something that has hampered his numbers. But Dasgupta, instead of blaming Rahul for his performances, held the BCCI responsible for treating the Indian batter unfairly. Also Read: India vs England Live Score, 1st Test Day 1, Headingley "See, I just hope they give him a permanent position now. He made his debut in 2014. It's been more than a decade, but we still don't know where does he fit into the Indian Test side? Is he a middle-order batter? Is he an opener? I think it's about time to tell him, 'KL, you've got to play this series or whatever, and you're going to play as an opener. This is what you're going to do. And I think once you give him that position, that security, we will see a different KL Rahul," Dasgupta said while speaking on Star Sports ahead of the start of India's first innings of the Headingley Test against England. Also Read: Virat Kohli's absence felt even before first ball is bowled in IND vs ENG Test: 'Moved on from Gavaskar, Sachin but...' "As of now, in every series,Virat Kohli's absence felt even before first ball is bowled in IND vs ENG Test: 'Moved on from Gavaskar, Sachin but...' it's like KL Rahul is trying to cement his position from one series to the next. You need a wicketkeeper in South Africa, call him. You need a No. 5, call him. Opener? Yes. So that's something I think is being quite unfair on him. It's been a decade now. Come on. Give him that series, maybe more than that and tell him this is how we are looking at you – as an opener – and play him." As Dasgupta pointed out, Rahul has been the perennial floater for the Indian team across formats. In Tests alone, he has moved up and down the batting order more than anyone else. As opener, Rahul has scored 2815 runs, and 234 runs from the six Tests he has batted at No. 6. Manjrekar did not see eye-to-eye with either Dasgupta or his judgment, pointing out the flaw in Rahul's career all these years. "Am I allowed to contradict? I will be nice. I believe KL Rahul has not shown the kind of consistency that's expected of him at any position. Had this been a guy who averaged 52 as an opener, nobody would dare drop him to No. 4 or 5. Having said that, huge responsibility on him. And Deep, given your assessment of leaving the balls, we'll see how Rahul goes about it today," said Manjrekar. With Rohit Sharma's retirement, Rahul has another fine opportunity to solidify himself as India's opener along with Yashasvi Jaiswal.
