
The worst culprits for noise pollution on trains? The staff
That's what happened on my venture out of the house this morning, anyway. The experience sent me scurrying home again to muse on whether I have had a more dispiriting, in the picayune sense, start to any morning this year so far. It turns out that I have. And call it a first world problem if you will, but the apotheosis of my 'tripartite of annoyance' theory was reached on a train heading from London to the Midlands recently.
The misery began at Euston, with the usual stampede caused by the announcement of the platform from which the train would be departing only being made around two and a half minutes before the carriage doors were shut. An old hand at this transport Darwinism, I elbowed and shoved with moderately successful elan, managing to snag myself a seat next to an, inevitably, out-of-order disabled toilet.
But my attempts to recover a normal heart rate were promptly stymied by an audio interruption far more effusive than anything the Euston station announcer could muster. 'Good morning and welcome aboard this 09.27 service to Birmingham International…' it began, the voice belonging to a man who it appeared harboured ambitions of being a radio disc jockey on a commercial pop station in the mid-1980s.
On and on and on he went, with the charisma of one of Ian McDonald's MoD briefings during the Falklands War, telling us things that I suspect a six-year-old train traveller would already know. Why do we need to be informed, over and over and over again, that 'tickets with other providers are not valid on this service'? Why do we need to be told which stations the train will be passing through four times? How many times have you seen anyone leap from their seat, hollering something along the lines of 'Maidstone? I thought this was the cross-Channel ferry to Dieppe!' before hurtling out of an already moving loco?
I wanted to get my breath back. I wanted to open my newspaper. I would have loved to have simply had some quiet time to try to unpick last night's horrible dream – that one about being stuck in a lift with Jools Holland again. But the final element of my rage tripartite only began after we creaked away from horrible Euston. The driver was, I presume, either busy driving the train or writing another job application to Smooth FM. In his place my fellow passengers and I got the adamantine cheerfulness of 'Tracey in the on-board shop' telling us she 'has a wide variety of sandwiches, cakes, hot snacks, hot and cold drinks, beers, wines and spirits'.

Incredibly, I'm already aware of what an on-board shop is likely to sell. So why are we poor customers, who just want to read our books or try to have a micro-sleep, subjected to this needless taxonomy? I don't ever recall employees of Greggs, let alone the Ivy, marching around outside their place of business with a loud hailer, instructing us that they have 'food on offer'. So why do it on a train, a place where I only want to hear the voices of the staff if there's a fire, hurricane or thermonuclear explosion? Even in those eventualities, I'm still quietly confident I could figure out these developments on my own without Tracey's help.
We live in an increasingly selfish society where the use of headphones to conduct a phone conversation or watch a YouTube clip on a bus, plane or train is now seen as somehow quaint. But noisy commuters are only taking their lead from the bodies who take us from A to B. Is it any wonder that there are parents out there who are happy to let their child watch an entire Harry Potter film on their iPad on loudspeaker from London to Birmingham when there are on-board staff who can, and will, be even noisier with their winning hand gambit of having access to a microphone and speaker system that reaches every corner of the train?
There is a growing, suitably sotto voce protest movement against noise pollution in this country. But we're way behind France, where a British traveller was recently given a fine for using his phone on loudspeaker on a platform. I'd feel much happier if we travellers could slap down our own fines (or at least start expecting discounts) if we can prove that our journey was ruined by staff feeling the need to use their microphone powers in a manner usually only abused by wedding reception DJs.
Am I being ludicrously atavistic in pining for a time when a train journey meant I could read my book, do a crossword and have a nap without being the victim of a barrage of information that neither me, nor anyone else, wants, needs or asks for? It would appear so. My horror dreams about Jools Holland will, no doubt, soon be replaced by ones about Tracey. And when you start feeling nostalgic for the strangulated adolescent tones of Jools, you know something has gone seriously awry.

Preserving Gaelic will require gargantuan effort
Founded in 1973 and based in the gorgeous Sleat peninsula on the Isle of Skye, it is an academic partner of the University of the Highlands and Islands and the world's only full-immersion Gaelic tertiary education institution. I was there for a short course – my second year in a row at the college – to improve my Gaelic. This year I was studying at level four after completing the level three course last summer. Roughly equivalent to the content of a Gaelic National 5 qualification, the level four course was perfect for me to work on my grammar, expand my vocabulary and most importantly build my confidence in speaking the language that once was dominant across so much of Scotland. In just the space of five days, I went from speaking in broken sentences and trying desperately to recall words I'd learnt months ago on Duolingo, to being able to converse much more confidently with fellow learners about our experiences on the course, our likes and dislikes, and our plans for the future. I live in Glasgow where there are a number of languages spoken with a far higher prevalence than Gaelic, and in the grand scheme of things there are a great many languages that I might be more likely to use throughout life. But I think there's something incredibly important – particularly to me as someone who has chosen to make Scotland my home after growing up in England – about learning the language of the country I call home. The simple fact is that it took a concerted effort, through the Highland Clearances and horrendous policy-making over the centuries, to try to kill the language – it will take a similarly concerted effort to support it to survive. My teacher on my short course at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig shared with my class a quote from 19th-century scholar John Stuart Blackie who, refuting the notion that Gaelic culture and language were ostensibly dead, replied that they were rather 'obstinately alive'. THIS remains true today – though perhaps in a slightly different way. Census data from 2022 shows the number of speakers in traditionally Gaelic-speaking communities in the Highlands and Islands continuing to fall, but the number is rising substantially in places like Glasgow. Next year, Glasgow will open its fourth Gaelic-medium education (GME) school in the city with a new Gaelic primary school opening in the Calton, and it's clear that the positive measures in the recently passed Scottish Languages Act 2025 to support GME will help more and more young people across Scotland learn Gaelic throughout childhood. All of this said though, it's quite clear that the support required to keep the language known by learners like me in places like Glasgow is quite different to the support needed to support Gaelic as a living language in the Highlands and Islands. This is one of the many reasons why Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is such an important institution. While it has an important role in teaching the language to new learners such as myself and countless others from across Scotland and around the world, it also plays a vital part in training Gaelic teachers, educating the Gaelic media industry, and vital research into the revitalisation of minority languages. Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is critical to keeping Gaelic alive, but clearly other support is needed in local communities to prevent further decline of the language. One such example where support is greatly needed is in tackling the housing crisis, which is often cited as one of the biggest threats to the language, particularly in tourist hotspots such as Skye and the Outer Hebrides. Simply put, the prevalence of holiday homes and Airbnb-style short-term lets in these Gaelic-speaking areas are driving house prices and rents sky-high. This is making it impossible for Gaelic-speaking young people to remain in their communities, driving them out and forcing them to live in places where they can't use the language in their everyday interactions. Homes once occupied by members of the community now sit empty outwith tourist season, presenting not only a challenge for the local economies of these often island communities, but also an existential threat for Gaelic as a living language. It'a not an unsolvable problem though. An amendment to the Housing (Scotland) Bill by Green MSP Ross Greer will be debated this autumn, and would allow an additional levy to be charged to those buying holiday homes or other additional properties in areas where Gaelic is widely spoken. It would make it harder for the rich to buy houses for profit, and making it easier for locals to buy homes to live in. While this needs to be just one part of a wider plan to support Gaelic to not just survive but thrive as a living language, it's a clear opportunity for MSPs to take meaningful action to support the language and culture of these island communities. It's clear that politicians of all parties need to do more to listen to the needs of Gaelic communities and take the actions needed to help the language thrive. The recently passed Scottish Languages Act gives Gaelic and Scots 'official status' as languages for the first time, but tangible action needs to back up this otherwise largely symbolic move. For so many Scots, Gaelic may seem little more than something they see on road signs and at train stations, but the fact is it's a vital part of our culture and the history of our land. My time at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig taught me so much – not just about grammar and vocabulary but about culture and music, history and tradition. It's a hugely special place, and I can't wait to go back. It runs short courses every year for learners of all abilities, and I simply can't recommend them enough to anyone wanting to connect with the Gaelic language.

MoD warns visitors to Strensall to stay safe on military land
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has issued a warning to visitors to a village near York after "numerous disruptions" to military exercises in the of Strensall Common is owned by the MoD and used as a firing range and training area, although there is public access at certain of live firing exercises are posted on notice boards and information panels around the Col Mark Jenkins said it was a "key time" to remind the public of "the potential risks when accessing the common at Strensall" following the Army's move to warfighting readiness in the recent Strategic Defence Review. He added: "The military train 24/7 so they are ready to deploy on operations, and disrupting this critical training has a real impact on their preparations and their ability to do their jobs effectively."Army personnel can close the permissive car parks and secure gates and access points to the common land, but the public can access the site from numerous points and paths. Lt Col Jenkins added that people should "remain mindful of the fact that military training could be taking place"."If we all work together to use these spaces with respect and consideration, the public will stay safe, and our armed forces will be able to carry out their important training exercises," he part of its Respect the Range campaign, the MoD is also raising awareness about the risk of wildfires, especially during the summer months.A spokesperson from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was working closely with the MoD to "ensure the safety and wellbeing of both serving personnel and members of the public". Last surviving Second World War Victoria Cross recipient dies aged 105
Flight Lieutenant John Cruickshank, from Aberdeen, received the VC for bravery during an attack on an enemy submarine that left him seriously injured. A total of 181 people received Britain's highest military decoration for their actions during the war. The RAF captain's family told the BBC he died last week and that a funeral would be held in private, the news outlet reported on Saturday. John Cruickshank in uniform (MOD/PA) Flt Lt Cruickshank was the captain of a Catalina flying boat with 210 Squadron, flying submarine-hunting missions from RAF Sullom Voe, in the Shetland Islands, Scotland. On July 17 1944, aged 24, he was sent on a patrol to protect the British Home Fleet as it returned from an attack on the German battleship Tirpitz. A U-boat was spotted on the surface near Norway and the aircraft he was captaining and piloting launched an offensive. The first bombs failed to release but Flt Lt Cruickshank turned the plane to face enemy fire and attack again. He dropped depth charges during the second attempt, sinking the U-boat. Flt Lt Cruickshank sustained 72 injuries including two to his lungs and 10 to his lower limbs during the assault. The navigator was killed, three other crew members were severely injured, and the badly damaged aircraft was filled with fumes from exploding shells. The surviving crew members spent five and a half hours flying back to Sullom Voe. Despite losing consciousness multiple times during their return, he assisted the second pilot with the landing which took an hour. In 2013, Flt Lt Cruickshank said: 'It was just normal, we were trained to do the job and that was it. 'I wouldn't like to say I'm the only one that has an amazing story, there are plenty of other stories coming from that time. 'It wasn't that wonderful in those days, I can tell you that. We could only think in those days there were better days to come.' After the war ended Flt Lt Cruickshank returned to his career in banking.
