Publishers sue state of Idaho over library book bans
A group of major publishers in the US are suing the state of Idaho over a book-banning law.
HB 710, enacted last July, forbids anyone under the age of 18 from accessing books deemed 'harmful to minors', including those depicting 'sexual conduct', in school or public libraries.
The ban extends to classics and bestsellers, including The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, Game of Thrones by George RR Martin and nonfiction books such as The 'What's Happening to My Body?' Book for Girls by Lynda Madaras.
Penguin Random House, Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, and Sourcebooks filed a lawsuit on Tuesday alongside three authors, a public library district, the US writers' body the Authors Guild, a teacher, two students and two parents.
This is the third state-level publisher-led lawsuit over book bans, following those against Florida and Iowa. The Idaho law 'goes even further than previous laws by removing classic books from public libraries in addition to schools', said Dan Novack, associate general counsel at Penguin Random House.
HB 710's definition of 'harmful' materials is 'vague and overbroad', says the lawsuit. The law allows private citizens to file complaints, putting librarians 'in the untenable position of having to guess whether any member of the public might file an objection to a book whose message they disagree with' by claiming the text falls within the law's definition of harmful.

Libraries, many of which could not afford the cost of a defence if they were sued, have pre-emptively removed books from their shelves in response to the law. 'This type of self-censorship is inimical to first amendment liberties', said Michael Grygiel, an adjunct faculty member with Cornell Law School's First Amendment Clinic, which is representing the plaintiffs.
Given that the law requires libraries to 'take reasonable steps' to restrict under-18s' access to 'harmful' books, libraries have to remove the texts from the library entirely, establish 'fully monitored, cordoned-off' adults-only sections, or convert to an 'adult-only' library.
Donnelly Public Library, one of the plaintiffs named in the lawsuit, converted to an adult-only library in May last year because it is too small to host an adult-only section, and it lacks the resources to review all the books in its collection to assess whether they fall under HB 710. Now under-18s cannot enter the library without their parent or guardian completing a three-part waiver.
'Our programming – which includes the only option for after-school care in Donnelly – has been severely impacted, with children unable to step inside the building to use the bathroom or keep warm without a complex waiver,' said the library's director, Sherry Scheline.
Scheline added: 'Our circulation has also declined significantly.' There was a 42.8% fall in materials checked out from the library in the six weeks after the introduction of the legislation, compared with the previous year.
Since the law took effect, titles moved to adult-only sections or removed from libraries entirely include A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou and Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut.

'Ruined' village on slate hillside hints at brutal House of the Dragon scenes

More info An iron ring has been thrown around a slate mine on the edge of Eryri for season three of HBO's House of the Dragon (HoTD). As set construction picks up pace, the whole of Dinorwig Quarry has been placed off limits with security guards posted around the massive complex. Sneak pictures of the work undertaken so far suggests a ruined village is being built. A series of fire-damaged carts and boxes have been brought to the site along with piles of charred timber. It's speculated the latter will be used to recreate buildings that were used in series two - showing the devastation wrought by a fire-breathing dragon. It's widely assumed the quarry, near Llanberis, is again standing in as a HoTD backdrop as Harrenhal Castle, the largest fortification in the fictional country of Westeros. included a military encampment and a modified slate incline where a dragon was shown perching. Three other sites in the area are also rumoured to be filming locations for the Game of Thrones prequel series. Two are thought to be in the Nant Peris pass at the foot of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), with a third by Llyn Padarn, Llanberis. (Image: John Horrigan) The main quarry footpath was closed on Monday morning (June 2) and this will now stay shut until Monday, June 17. Security guards have been posted at both quarry entrances – from the Nant Peris side and from the Dinorwig Bus Terminus. 'But there are more all around the quarry to prevent unauthorised access,' said local resident John Horrigan, whose land borders the quarry. 'They are seriously enclosing the site and not just at the main entrances. 'The producers have been quite clever this time. For season two, they didn't close off the quarry completely until filming began, making it easier for some people to see the sets being built. This year they want to ensure no interruptions, so have closed off the quarry earlier.' (Image: John Horrigan) Before the quarry was declared completely off-limits, Mr Horrigan snuck inside to get an idea of what's been done so far. Set construction appears to be taking place at three locations within the quarry, including what he understands will be a 'destroyed village'. 'This is in the same place where they had the battle encampment in the last series, with buildings, tents and catapults. Already some props have been brought on site - and they're all burnt. Even though the props are made off-site, you get a strong burning smell as soon as you reach the area. 'Lots of burnt timber are also piled up on wooden pallets ready for set construction. This morning, two 18-tonne trucks and an articulated lorry brought in more crates, ready to be hoisted into position and unpacked by construction crews. 'It looks like they are recreating the village from the last series, only this time after it's been ruined and burnt to the ground by a dragon.' (Image: Carwyn Vaughan) Another set involves a tunnel leading to a separate pit that can't be viewed from elsewhere in the quarry. A new flight of steps has been built to an upper level, on which scaffolding is being erected. 'It's massive,' said Mr Horrigan. 'They've spend weeks building it, with erecting safety rails, steps and towers. I don't know if that's where some of the actors will be filmed, or whether it's they're putting cameras to film the canyon below, but a battle scene is predicted.' Another set involves one of the site's former quarry mills: a huge wooden facade has been erected as if to mimic a medieval hall. 'It's amazing to think they're only filming for four days and yet have to spend a month building the sets,' said Mr Horrigan. 'It's definitely bigger than last time and the whole process is taking longer.' 'I came across four rocks that looked so real you wouldn't know they were fake even if you stood by them. I wonder how many people thought they were part of a new rockfall. Those in the know will point to the sandbags on top to stop them rolling away!' (Image: John Horrigan) In Nant Peris, beneath Yr Wyddfa, no sites have been formally identified yet. However the Union Rock area at the western end of Llyn Padarn has been closed off. Last year the same area was used as a storage area when filming took place on Llyn Padarn for Netflix's The Witcher fantasy series. Could the lake again be used as a backdrop, this time for HoTD? In season two, multiple sites in Gwynedd, Anglesey and Conwy doubled for Westeros. At Dinorwig, site preparation continues until Monday, June 9. Filming starts the following day and continues until Friday, June 13. During this four-day period, the road to the Allt Ddu bus terminus will be closed. Site reinstatement then takes place until Friday, June 20. Another filming day is set for Thursday, June 26. This will also involve a 'few days' either side for preparation and site reinstatement. Location and security crews are reported to be staying in Caernarfon, while safety staff are said to be overnighting in Bangor. Greta Thunberg teams up with acting legend to 'break Israeli blockade'
Greta Thunberg and Game of Thrones actor, Liam Cunningham, have teamed up with MEP Rima Hassan on the humanitarian aid ship Madleen which has departed for Gaza. Climate activist Greta Thunberg has joined forces with Game of Thrones icon Liam Cunningham and 11 other activists to set sail for Gaza on a ship aimed at 'breaking Israel's siege'. Carrying all 12 activists, the sailing boat, named Madleen, departed from the port of Catania in Sicily on Sunday, June 1 and is operated by the activist group Freedom Flotilla Coalition. The purpose of the mission is to reach the shores of the Gaza Strip to bring aid supplies and raise 'international awareness' of the ongoing humanitarian crisis, the activists stated at a press conference on Sunday, ahead of the ship's departure. 'We are doing this because, no matter what odds we are against, we have to keep trying. Because the moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity,' Thunberg said, tearing up during her speech. Thunberg continued: 'And, no matter how dangerous this mission is, it's nowhere near as dangerous as the silence of the entire world in the face of the livestreamed genocide.' The Freedom Flotilla Coalition accuses Israel of genocidal acts in its war in Gaza - claims which Israel has denied. Thunberg has been a vocal opponent of Israel's war on Gaza and boarded the ship alongside Liam Cunningham, the Game of Thrones actor, and European parliamentarian Rima Hassan. Hassan, the French-Palestinian human rights activist and lawyer, was denied entry to Israel earlier this year for her outspoken opposition to Israeli attacks on Gaza. Cunningham said of the mission, prior to departure: 'We don't want any harm to come to these people. This is a humanitarian mission, doing what the rest of the world should be doing, including the EU - the European community where I'm from.' The mission departs one month after the Freedom Flotilla Coalition's last humanitarian sailing mission to Gaza failed after the ship was allegedly attacked by two drones while in international waters. Freedom Flotilla Coalition blamed Israel for the attack which damaged the front end of the ship 'Conscience' in early May. 'We are breaking the siege of Gaza by sea, but that's part of a broader strategy of mobilisations that will also attempt to break the siege by land,' said the activist Thiago Ávila of the Madleen voyage. The journey is expected to take seven days, assuming no interference. Several celebrities including actress Susan Sarandon, musician Brian Eno, author Max Porter and Alana Hadid have also participated in a joint video to share their support for Freedom Flotilla's latest mission. "A state on trial for genocide cannot and must not be permitted to decide what aid reaches the people it is trying to destroy," Hadid declares in the video.
