Kesha lets rip on new album Period after putting legal fights behind her
Kesha sued Gottwald in 2014, alleging sexual and emotional abuse.
The producer countersued for defamation and breach of contract. A settlement was finally reached in June 2023 - and there's a sense of relief on Period, her first album since then.
Long before last year's Brat Summer – a raucous celebration of It-Girl bravado and lime-green images masterminded by Charli XCX – we had what could have been called the Kesha Spring.
Like Charli, Nashville-born Kesha Sebert made her name (in the late 2000s) as a party-starter who was the life and soul of every good night out.
Her attitude didn't go unnoticed. Kesha was a guest on Charli's vinyl remix album, Brat And It's Completely Different, released last autumn.
Although bragging about brushing your teeth with Jack Daniels, as Kesha once did, only gets you so far, and she broadened her outlook after her initial breakthrough. Moving away from the cheerleader pop of songs such as hedonistic 2009 debut single Tik Tok, she worked with various rock acts, including Iggy Pop, The Flaming Lips and Eagles Of Death Metal.
Following a collaboration with Alice Cooper, the Godfather of Shock Rock said that she'd rather be like Robert Plant than Britney Spears.
Titled after the American English word for full stop (and stylized as a pink dot on the album sleeve), Period is a return to the carefree Kesha of old: an effervescent blend of pop, dance and country, spiced up with humorous lyrics and a love of the trash aesthetic. It's a far cry from 2023's reflective Gag Order, on which the emotional impact of her legal woes loomed large.
'I only drink when I'm happy, and I'm drunk right now,' she sings on Freedom, showing off her impressive vocal range on a six-minute track that starts with jazz piano and a choral chant before taking wing as a playful house music workout powered by an unlikely collaborator in Roger Waters' guitarist Jonathan Wilson.
'Freedom, I've been waiting for you,' concludes Kesha.
Elsewhere, she adds sauce – 'Rev my engine 'til you make it purr' – on racy Euro-pop number Joyride, before turning to her Tennessee roots on Yippee-Ki-Yay, which combines loping dance grooves and country in a similar fashion to Shaboozey's 2024 mega-hit A Bar Song (Tipsy). 'Hose me down at the trailer park,' she sings, and then: 'I'm feeling loose, I'm feeling light, I'm hella smooth like Miller Lite.'
Her habit of falling for the wrong guy ('the bizarre type, lowlife') is also apparent. 'God, I love a hopeless bastard,' she admits on Red Flag, before giving us a tongue-in-cheek index of her not-so-ideal men on Euro-disco number Boy Crazy: 'Bikers and the dumb bros, daddies and the gym hoes.'
It's all very kitschy and catchy, with just enough sonic invention – such as the accordion on Joyride – to prevent the songs from becoming generic, even if Kesha's vocal power is occasionally diminished by auto-tune effects.
But Period finishes strongly. Too Hard, all pillow-soft electronics, is a love song co-written by Kesha's mum Pebe Sebert, a singer-songwriter covered by Dolly Parton in the 1980s, and Cathedral is a rock ballad about moving on from the bad times.
'I died in the hell so I could start living again in the cathedral,' she sings. It's not so much a full stop as the start of a brand new chapter.

Jon Stewart shares fears for Daily Show's future after Colbert's Late Show axed
Jon Stewart has opened up about the recent axing of Stephen Colbert's Late Show and expressed uncertainty about the future of his own program. CBS confirmed last week it was bringing the long-running Late Show to an end in 2026, blaming 'financial decisions'. But the move comes amid ongoing concerns about the impact of the looming Skydance-Paramount merger, that will require the approval of the Trump administration. 'They may sell the whole f******* place for parts. I just don't know,' the Stewart said on The Weekly Show. 'We'll deal with it when we do.' Stewart, whose Comedy Central show is owned by Paramount Global, said he hadn't heard anything yet but was prepared for the worst. 'Unfortunately, we haven't heard anything from them. They haven't called me and said 'Don't get too comfortable in that office, Stewart.' 'But let me tell you something, I've been kicked out of s******* establishments than that,' he continued. 'We'll land on our feet. I honestly don't know.' CBS executives insist the 'agonizing' decision to end the Late Show was not related to its performance or content. Stewart said he was in the dark as to whether 'ideology' would dictate the future of his show. 'We've all got a surmise about who actually is owning it and what his ideology is, but ideology may not play a part,' he said. His comments come after Paramount was accused of caving to President Donald Trump's demands by settling $16 million over reporting in a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris that broadcast last fall. Trump has been reveling in the cancellation of Colbert's show, gloating on Truth Social Friday: 'I absolutely love that Colbert got fired.' 'His talent was even less than his ratings,' he added, before threatening other shows with the same fate. 'I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert! Greg Gutfeld is better than all of them combined, including the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show.' Trump's 'moronic' reference was a signal to The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon. The news of Colbert's show being axed has angered fans, who booed when the host made the announcement on his show Thursday night. 'I share your feelings,' Colbert said.

Why? And why now?"Most of the time I don't [take up the offer to play as a wild card]," Williams laughed in her pre-tournament news conference."But this time I had been hitting the ball. And of course I love the game and the hard courts, it's my favourite surface, what I feel comfortable on. So all those different factors."The elder Williams emerged as a teenage phenomenon in the 1990s, living up to what had already been long-billed hype when she made her professional debut aged just winning the opening match at her first WTA tournament, the rangy youngster further validated the fanfare by running world number two Arantxa Sanchez Vicario close in six years, she had lifted her maiden Grand Slam title. Using her height to generate power, Williams changed the face of the WTA Tour with her aggressive, first-strike tennis and became a blueprint for success - including her younger sister, who went on to win 22 major same thunderous style which served the former world number one so well in her prime is how she plans to beat fellow American Peyton Stearns, who also loves to bludgeon the ball."I definitely feel I'll play well. I'm still the same player. I'm a big hitter. I hit big. This is my brand," smiled Williams."So it's about hitting big and actually putting it in. So this will be my effort: put it in the court. That's my main goal." British men's number one Jack Draper will not play again until the US Open, where he was a semi-finalist last year, because of an arm injury. With most of the leading players taking a break after Wimbledon, it presented opportunities for those further down the rankings to take centre up Denis Shapovalov. The 26-year-old Canadian cracked the world's top 10 in 2021 but dropped as low as 140th last year after a knee injury suffered at Wimbledon two years - whose swashbuckling style can be erratic but always fun to watch - had doubts if he would be able to make a full recovery, but is moving closer back to his left-hander did not drop a set on the way to claiming the ATP 250 title in Los Cabos and joined an exclusive list of only six men's players to win multiple tour-level titles in lifting an ATP trophy was Kazahkstan's Alexander Bublik. On the WTA Tour, France's Lois Boisson - who memorably came out of nowhere to reach the Roland Garros semi-finals - proved that was no fluke by winning the Hamburg clay-court Anna Bondar, who lost to Boisson in the final, was another big climber in a quiet week, as were Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu and Switzerland's Jil Teichmann after they contested the Iasi final. Courteney Cox, 61, sends her fans into a frenzy as she shares a clip of herself playing drums to a Justin Bieber hit: 'This was not on my 2025 bingo card'
Courteney Cox sent her fans into a frenzy as she shared a clip playing drums to a Justin Bieber hit. The Friends star, 61, who shot to fame after her role as Monica Gellar on the sitcom, flaunted her seemingly endless talents as she tried her hand at playing Daisies by Justin Bieber. Sharing a clip to TikTok, she was seen sat at a four-piece drum set complete with two gold symbols and studio headphones. The actress appeared focused as she drummed away to the hit while wearing a pair of flared jeans and a black T-shirt. Set up in what appears to be the TV star's lounge, Courteney finished her rocker look with a pair of black-tinted sunglasses. Alongside her post she penned: 'Didn't get all the beats but fun trying to learn it'. And the post has her fans in a frenzy as they flocked to her comment box in awe. One penned: 'Courtney Cox playing drums was not on my 2025 bingo card, but I'm here for it!!' 'I think she was made for music. She was discovered at a Bruce Springsteen concert. I'm here for it all' There were plenty of Friends references too, including the comment: 'Now make Ross pull out the keyboard' 'Go Court!! I was just talking about you saying how cute it would be if you were in the Bruce Springsteen movie!!' 'The one where Monica became a drummer' 'this song sounds like a mixture of Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. i love it.' 'Monica darling, your mother should definitely be proud of this effort. But she's probably not because it's not ross playing. Good try sweetie.' And post has her fans in a frenzy as they flocked to her comment box in awe 'I'm down for a full concert of this please ❤️' 'Monica on the drums, Phebs singing, Ross on the keyboard and Mike playing piano is what we need' 'Imagine being Courtney Cox, being able to do ANYTHING YOU WANT and playing drums in the living room. I think our priorities aren't in the right order.' Last month, Courteney rung in her 61st birthday - and she previously opened up about aging and using facial fillers. 'Thinking I was getting older when I was really young, that's just a bummer, a waste of time,' she said about getting fillers as she grew older during an episode of the Gloss Angeles podcast in 2023. 'It's a domino effect, it's like you don't realize that you look a little off, so then you keep doing more cause you look normal to yourself.' Cox added, 'You look in the mirror and go, "Oh, that looks good," you think, and you don't realize what it looks like to the outside person and just doing too many fillers and having to have them removed. 'Which thank God they are removable, I think I messed up a lot and now luckily I can, I was able to reverse most of that, now I'm actually just older.' Also last month, Courteney had the chance to celebrate her daughter Coco's 21st birthday. She shares Coco with ex-husband David Arquette - whom she was married to from 1999 until their divorce was finalized in 2013. The star jumped to Instagram to pay tribute to her daughter and typed out, 'From this to this. 21 years of everything. My heart barely fits inside my chest for the amount of love I have for you. 'Keep it coming Co to the Lo. I'm so happy I'm your Bourt Lemon. Happy birthday. I love you so much ♥️♥️♥️.' Her daughter jumped to the comment section to respond with, 'I love you so so much my momma.' Courteney has since been in a long-term relationship with Snow Patrol band member Johnny McDaid beginning in 2013. The pair ended their engagement in 2019 but have still remained together.
