LIV Golf alters format for season-ending championship
The 13-team league will stage a play-in match on Wednesday of the LIV Golf Team Championship at Saint John's Resort in Plymouth, Michigan, between the teams who sit 12th and 13th in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, there is no first-round bye for the top seeds as in prior years.
"I think you'll see a few teams get knocked out that you maybe wouldn't expect," said Australia's Cameron Smith in a LIV Golf news release. Smith captains the defending team champions, Ripper GC.
"More pressure. Each day matters more," Crushers captain Bryson DeChambeau added.
The play-in will be held on August 20, then the remaining 12 teams head to the course on August 22 for the quarter-finals.
For the semi-finals on August 23, six teams will be in the championship bracket and the three winners will move on to the stroke-play finals on August 24.
In other changes to the format, all 48 players from those teams will compete and the captains of the higher-seeded teams will be given the advantage of seeing his opponent's lineup before finalising the matchups.
Legion XIII, captained by Spaniard Jon Rahm, currently lead the team standings ahead of DeChambeau's Crushers in second and Spaniard Sergio Garcia's Fireballs GC in third.
The current bottom two teams are Majesticks GC, captained by Sweden's Henrik Stenson, and Kevin Na's Iron Heads GC.

No contest as Warner wins duel of illustrious Aussies
The eagerly awaited first duel between two Australian batting greats in the Hundred has turned into a knock-out triumph for David Warner over his old mate Steve Smith. After Warner had battled expertly to compile an unbeaten 70 for the London Spirit to put them in the driving seat in the much anticipated Saturday evening clash in Cardiff, Smith could muster just three as his early dismissal led to a collapse by the Welsh Fire. Only a spectacular unbeaten 86 from Jonny Bairstow, aided by excellent support from Australian allrounder Chris Green (32no off 21 balls) in a magnificent century partnership, gave the hosts the glimpse of a most unlikely win but London held their nerve for a thrilling eight-run win. Warner, quite indefatigable at the age of 38 as he scampered every run as if it might be his last, cracked two big straight sixes to go with eight fours off 45 balls, helping the Spirit amass an impressive 5-163 on what he called a "difficult, seamy" surface. Certainly, it looked hard as Smith, opening up with Bairstow, succumbed on just the fifth ball he faced, his unlovely attempted scoop off Richard Gleeson ending in the hands of fine third-man. That prompted the home side to implode, slumping to 6-55 with Anglo-Aussie Dan Worrall particularly impressive with his 2-31 off his 20-ball allocation. But Green, who's been having a fruitful spell with Lancashire this summer, finally proved a worthy partner for Bairstow, hitting a six and a couple of boundaries which seemed to trigger his illustrious English partner to move into his best gimlet-eyed 'Here's Jonny' mode. Bairstow was stupendous, peppering six sixes and six fours around off 50 balls as the Sophia Gardens crowd reached a fever pitch of excitement near the end. Warner, who won the player-of-the-match 'hero' award and was hailed as "outstanding" by his Spirit skipper Kane Williamson, had to admit with a smile: "We tried to execute but Jonny was on fire! "Credit to the way he and Greeny batted, they were superb." The veteran left-hander reckoned he was still trying to get to grips with the 10-balls-per-end format but recognised the Justin Langer-coached Spirit's win as crucial after they'd lost their opening match at Lord's on Tuesday when he fell cheaply for just nine. "Got a good bus ride tomorrow," he smiled. He had been helped during the Spirit's innings by a sprightly cameo from fellow Aussie Ashton Turner, who hit 24 off 14 balls before he holed out to Smith off some impressive bowling from another green-and-gold import Riley Meredith (1-26). In the day's other men's match, another Australian quick Jason Behrendorff impressed in the Oval Invincibles' nine-wicket home win over Manchester Originals, taking 2-16 off his 15 deliveries, including the key wicket of Jos Buttler. Phil Salt (41 off 32) became the first batter to pass 1000 runs in the competition in the Originals' 128 before Will Jacks (61) and Tawanda Muyeye (59no) helped ease the Invincibles to 1-129 with 43 balls to spare. Smith questioned by police, released to play for Souths
South Sydney have spoken with the NRL Integrity Unit after star signing Brandon Smith was interviewed by police on arrival at Gold Coast airport on Saturday. The 29-year-old was released without charge to take his place in the Rabbitohs side against the Gold Coast on Sunday afternoon at Robina in what will be his 150th NRL game. AAP spoke to club CEO Blake Solly at the ground before kick-off. While no details have emerged on why exactly Smith was spoken to by police, it is understood there was no issue with the 2020 premiership winner, who was permitted to join the team at their hotel and prepare to play in the match. The Rabbitohs have also informed the NRL, which had no problem with him playing. The Titans worked with stadium staff to ensure Smith was not bounced by camera crews on his arrival with the side on the team bus hours before kick-off. Queensland Police issued a statement confirming they had spoken with Smith: "Queensland Police had cause to speak to a 29-year-old male at Coolangatta Airport. The male was later released without charge. Police have no further information to provide." It is also understood Smith was not involved in any behaviour on the plane that was untoward. Smith joined the Rabbitohs mid-season after securing a release from the Sydney Roosters. His return to play was curtailed until he had fully recovered from an ACL injury suffered last year. In his first game for the Rabbitohs in round 18 he sustained another knee injury, an MCL sprain. Sunday's clash is just his second for the club after previously lining up in 107 games for Melbourne and 41 for the Roosters.
