Prep talk: Venice baseball is 21-1 and rising in City Section
With a 12-2 win over Loyola on Saturday, Venice's baseball team improved to 21-1 and is positioning itself for a high seeding in the City Section Open Division playoffs.
While the winner of the West Valley League, either Birmingham or El Camino Real, is the likely No. 1 seed, Venice has a good argument to be right behind. The Gondoliers are 14-0 in the Western League and own wins over Valley Mission League leader Sun Valley Poly and have a win over El Segundo, which is 17-6-1.

Coach Kevin Brockway has a senior-dominated team that includes Noel Moreno, who is 8-1 with an 0.58 ERA. Sophomore Jace Lindblom is 5-0 and senior Canon King is 6-0. Having three quality pitchers is a must to win a City Open Division title.
King leads the team in hitting with 30 hits. Venice has six games left on its regular-season schedule, with matchups against San Fernando and San Pedro set to be the toughest.

Florida Football Dealt Bad News on Tuesday
Florida Football Dealt Bad News on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Florida Gators are heading into a 2025 season that will have plenty of hope, expectations and pressure surrounding it. Advertisement Head coach Billy Napier spent most of last season on the hot seat before it was revealed he'd be given another chance in 2025. The Gators ended up finishing 8-5, securing the program's first season above .500 since 2020. As he and the team look to build off of their strong finish to the year, they have been dealt with a bit of adversity on Tuesday. As reported by the Gainesville Sun, one of the members of the team's 2025 recruiting class was arrested and taken to the Alachua Regional Juvenile Detention Center. The player's information was released due to the fact that they are 17-years-old. However, Kevin Brockway was able to confirm what the player was detained for. "An incoming Florida football freshman has been arrested on a third-degree felony charge of false imprisonment (dating violence) following an alleged altercation on June 1," Brockway wrote. Florida Gators head coach Billy Medley-USA TODAY Sports The school did release a statement on the matter as well, but are still in the investigative process. Advertisement "We will continue to gather facts, cooperate with and monitor the legal and administrative process," the spokesperson told Brockway. The report revealed that the incident occurred after a verbal argument occurred following the player finding something on the victim's cellular device. It then became "physical" as the unnamed player pushed the victim onto a bed and shook her, while holding her down. Brockway also confirmed that the alleged victim accused the player of choking her, punching her in the face, preventing her from leaving and throwing her phone at a wall. While the player is not named, the report did reveal they weighed "close to 400 pounds," outweighing the alleged victim by over 200 pounds. The player reportedly denied choking the alleged victim, and also denied preventing her from leaving. Advertisement The Gators signed a 19-man class for 2025, ranking as the No. 7 class in the country. Birmingham Stallions vs. Michigan Panthers where to watch: TV channel, start time, odds
Birmingham Stallions vs. Michigan Panthers where to watch: TV channel, start time, odds Show Caption Hide Caption Greg Olsen believes Travis Kelce 'controls how he leaves the game' Former NFL tight end Greg Olsen has high praise for Travis Kelce and shares when he believes Travis Kelce will eventually retire from the NFL. Sports Seriously The Birmingham Stallions haven't lost to the Michigan Panthers in five meetings since the 2024 USFL-XFL merger. Skip Holtz's squad will need to keep that perfect record intact to get back to the UFL championship game. The Stallions and Panthers are set to meet Sunday in the 2025 USFL conference championship game. It will mark the third meeting of the season between the squads, with Birmingham winning the previous two 21-12 and 26-22, respectively. Birmingham and Michigan were the UFL's highest-scoring offenses during the 2025 spring-league season. The Panthers averaged a league-best 24.5 points per game, while the Stallions upped their average to 24.4 points per game thanks to a 46-point outburst in their Week 10 win over the Memphis Showboats. Quarterback play has been a big part of each squad's success. The Panthers got an MVP-level performance from Bryce Perkins when he was healthy during the season. He missed the final three games of the season due to an ankle injury, which allowed Danny Etling to thrive in his stead. Meanwhile, the Stallions dealt with significant injury issues at quarterback, as Alex McGough and Matt Corral both endured long absences after early-season injuries. Eventually, J'Mar Smith came out of retirement to helm Holtz's squad. He thrived in three starts, completing 65% of his passes for 758 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. While this game has the makings of a potential shootout, it's worth noting Birmingham's defense limited Michigan to two of its three lowest scoring outputs of the season. Kyahva Tezino and Bradlee Anae played significant roles in those regular-season wins, so the Stallions will rely on the star linebacker and pass rusher to once again slow down Michigan's dynamic offense.
