Up your Valentines game with these 10 wines: Hawaiʻi celebrates
Mark Cartland, Sommelier and Wine Director for Island Vintage Wine Bars in Waikiki and Kapolei Commons, shared his expert recommendations for wines that will make your Valentine's Day unforgettable. From sparkling wines to elegant reds, these choices cater to all tastes and ensure a memorable experience.
'We want to create a perfect setting for everyone,' Cartland said. 'Whether you're celebrating love with someone special or enjoying a festive gathering with your closest friends, the wines should be as special as the moment itself.'
Cartland often creates what he calls a 'Lovers' Flight'. These are curated selections of wines that pair beautifully with Valentine's Day dinners.
The flight often includes Champagne, rosé and a beautiful red wine.
'This is a perfect way to kick off your evening, with bubbly, vibrant flavors that set the tone,' he explained.
For a sparkling start, Cartland suggests Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Champagne.
'Champagne is always a great choice for celebrations,' he said as he noted its rich complexity with notes of brioche, almond and citrus. This Champagne, which hails from Ambonnay in the Champagne region of France, offers fine bubbles that make it an elegant start to any Valentine's evening.
'Champagne's expansive, yet precise, character makes it easy to love and hard to forget,' Cartland added.
Next in the Lovers' Flight, Cartland recommended Sancerre Cuvée La Croix Poignant — Charrier.
'This rosé, from the Loire Valley in France, is light and crisp and offers red berry flavors like strawberry and raspberry with a refreshing minerality,' he explained. 'It pairs beautifully with seafood, salads or light poultry dishes. It's the perfect bridge from Champagne to red wines.'
A rosé like this adds an element of elegance and lightness to the evening as it's ideal for sharing with loved ones.
Valentine's Day is not complete without a red wine that embodies depth, complexity and romance. Cartland recommended Roagna Barbera d'Alba 2018. It's a well-structured red wine from Piedmont, Italy.
'Barbera is often overlooked, but this one is truly special,' Cartland shared. 'Roagna is known for its traditional winemaking methods, and the extended aging adds complexity to the wine. You'll taste vibrant red fruit flavors, a bit of earthy undertone and great acidity.'
The deep flavors make this wine an ideal match for pasta, grilled meats and aged cheeses.
Another exceptional red on Cartland's list is Lágrimas de Bhilar from Rioja, Spain. Made from the Garnacha grape, this wine is bright, fresh and full of floral and red berry notes. Cartland explains,
'This wine is organic and is crafted with biodynamic and sustainable practices,' he explained. 'It's a perfect choice for those looking to pair wine with tapas, roasted vegetables or light meats.'
It's not only delicious but also a testament to the winemaker's commitment to environmental stewardship.
Cartland also loves the velvety smoothness of Radio-Coteau 'Belay' Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.
'This is one of the sexiest, most velvety Pinot Noirs I've tasted in years,' he raved. 'It has silky textures with red cherry, spice and earthy minerality that make it a fantastic choice for dishes like duck, salmon or mushroom-based recipes.'
The Pinot Noir's delicate yet powerful nature pairs perfectly with a romantic meal.
For a bold, full-bodied red, Cartland suggests Arrowood Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. 'This is a rich, intense wine with flavors of blackberry, cassis, dark chocolate and oak spices. It's a great match for steak, lamb or aged cheeses,' Cartland said.
A Cabernet Sauvignon like this offers a dramatic, flavorful experience that makes it perfect for those seeking a wine that matches the strength and passion of the evening.
While reds often steal the spotlight on Valentine's Day, Cartland also recommended a couple of whites that will wow your guests.
For a luxurious white, Cartland turns to Hartford Court Four Hearts Vineyards Chardonnay 2021 from Russian River Valley in Sonoma, California.
'This Chardonnay is rich and full-bodied, with notes of citrus, apple and vanilla,' he explained. 'It's barrel-aged; so, it has a lovely, toasted oak quality. It pairs wonderfully with lobster, creamy pasta or roasted chicken.'
Another white that Cartland highlights is Andis Wines Old Dillian Vineyard Semillon Reserve, a medium-bodied wine from the Sierra Foothills in California.
'This Semillon is tropical, with citrus and honeyed notes, making it a perfect pairing with seafood, sushi or creamy cheeses,' he said. 'It's versatile, elegant and ideal for a variety of Valentine's Day dishes.'
Cartland also pointed out how many of the wines he recommends are products of true passion.
'Take Vocal Vineyards Sabroso Enz Vineyard for example,' he said. 'This wine, made from Cabernet Pfeffer and Zinfandel, is a labor of love. The wine has a unique combination of wild figs, lavender and black pepper. This combination makes it perfect for grilled meats, charcuterie or spicy dishes.'
It's a wine that's as intriguing as it is delicious.
Then there's Pedro Parra Vinista 2021 Itata País from Chile.
'This wine is made from the País grape, which can be a bit funky, but Pedro Parra has perfected it,' Cartland shared. 'It's a light-bodied red with bright red fruit and earthy notes that make it a fantastic match for grilled meats, charcuterie or roasted vegetables.'
Just as each Valentine's Day is unique, so is each wine. Cartland suggested experimenting with different wines to find the one that speaks to you and your loved ones.
'Wine, like love, has many facets,' he said. 'Sometimes, you want something light and crisp. Other times, you want something rich and bold. Whatever you choose, it's about finding something that enhances the experience and brings people together.'
Cartland explained the topic of sugar in wines in a way that helps highlight the difference between regular sweet drinks and the more restrained sugar content in many wines.
'Adding sugar to wines, also known as 'chaptalization' in France, is illegal in many parts of Europe, particularly with fine wines,' Cartland said as he underscored how serious the rules are in these wine-producing regions.
While chaptalization is sometimes practiced in the United States, Cartland emphasized that it is generally not encouraged.
'It is done some in the United States; but again, it's not really encouraged. And most of the wines that we have here in Island Vintage Wine Bar are considered dry wines.'
By dry wines, he means wines that have fewer than seven grams of sugar per liter. This is quite a difference compared to sugary soft drinks.
'By way of comparison, a Coca-Cola has 39 grams of sugar for 12 ounces,' explained. 'So, it gives you kind of a sense of scale there.'
Cartland also made an important point for those who are health-conscious. He referenced a wine they carry with only two grams of sugar per liter, which is barely noticeable.
'This one [Radio] has two grams of sugar per liter, which is almost… it's probably on the sensory threshold,' he added. 'You're not able to sense it, but it certainly would be a wine that, while being fruity and flavorful, would be safer for people that are watching their blood sugar levels.'

Cool New Champagnes And Sparkling Wines For Summer
Chandon's newest bubbly, Reserve Blanc de Blancs Chandon It is an ideal time to be drinking Champagne and sparkling wines—not only because hot summer days are best quenched with millions of pearly bubbles but also because some of the world's best producers are debuting exciting and cool new expressions. Laurent-Perrier made a splash this summer with the arrival of a Champagne composed entirely of reserve wines. In California, winemaker Andrew Books launched a sparkling wine that has been ten years in the making and Piper Heidsieck just launched a new brut rose. Adventures in bubbly start now with this list of the coolest new Champagnes and sparkling wines: Laurent-Perrier Héritage: A marvelous new expression from the family-run house of Laurent-Perrier—in many ways the Hermès of Champagne. One of the few houses that is independent and family-owned, they prize legacy, tradition and history as well as dedication to craft. They rush nothing and are devoted to precision. This new expression (which is a BIG deal, as they've debuted only eight wines in 86 years of production) is a unique blend composed entirely of reserve wines. They blended over 40 different crus (50% of which are Grand Cru) aged the wine for four years and added minimal dosage. The palate dances with lively notes of lemon cream and peach; the texture is silky and rich and the finish brings lovely notes of buttered biscuit. Just a gorgeous Champagne, and brand new to the market this summer. $124.99 Chandon Reserve Blanc de Blancs: (on shelves in August) The new Reserve Blanc de Blancs is a bit of a departure for Chandon's winemaker Pauline Lhote. It has more oak aging and a yeastier, more 'reserve' flavor profile that calls to mind Lhote's favorite Blanc de Blancs from Champagne. It was aged 52 months, Fuji pear, apple, citrus, brioche, almond, and honey. Made from 100% Chardonnay, with partial fermentation in French oak barrels for added layers of richness and complexity, the wine was aged for 52 months. Ripe apple and pear notes layered with lemon, cream and buttery croissant character show on the palate. Complex and alive, a truly rich expression of Carneros terroir and climate. $40 Kernel Sparkling Pinot Blanc, Los Carneros: This 100% pinot blanc sparkling wine is another premium expression from Los Carneros. Winemaker Andrew Brooks opted to sparkle pinot blanc (as opposed to the classic varietals chardonnay and pinot noir) and the result is layered deliciousness. It's juicy and mouthwatering but also possesses a complex richly textured mousse rife with notes of ripe apple, citrus zest, and a buttery-nutty top note. $40 Piper-Heidsieck Brut Rosé: Piper-Heidsieck just debuted a vibrant new cuvée to its portfolio: Brut Rosé. Crafted by Chief Winemaker Emilien Boutillat upon his arrival at the House, the new rosé is a precise blend of pinot noir, chardonnay and meunier. The palate dances with vibrant strawberry-raspberry notes and gets a zesty finish from citrus notes. Elegant, fresh and juicy it's a stunning new rose from a venerated Champagne producer. $74 Moët & Chandon Collection Impériale, Création N°2 : The much-awaited second iteration of Chef de Cave Benoît Gouez's compelling blend of specific vintages aged in various formats is not yet out, but expect to see it later this year. Each expression reveals something new, and this one promises to be as exceptional as the first debut— Moët & Chandon Collection Impériale Création N ° 1 : A connoisseurs Champagne by all means with its precise focused palate of pear and smoky citrus amplified by a marvelous freshness and no dosage. Stay tuned for price and availability.

How Miami's airport and seaport are working to get you fresher fruit and flowers
Miami International Airport is boosting cargo capacity by as much as 50% with a new facility that broke ground on Monday, a sign of its expanding role in providing fresh fish, fruit and flowers to consumers across the East Coast. The $141 million joint initiative with PortMiami will transform vacant land southwest of the airport at Northwest 74th Avenue and 12th Street. Slated to open in 2027, the 340,000-square-foot cold storage complex, about the size of six NFL fields, will allow more fresh produce and other perishables to enter the U.S. through Miami. Hollywood-based Mandich Group, a privately held cold storage development firm, is putting in $98.5 million and the PortMiami will contribute $9 million. The port will also provide $33.5 million it obtained from a U.S. Department of Transportation grant. 'It will be the first center of its kind in the state of Florida and the largest in the U.S.,' PortMiami spokesperson Suzy Trutie said in an interview with the Miami Herald. The airport and seaport receive lots of perishables. PortMiami puts them on trucks and sends them to MIA for storage and treatment before they're further transported. The new building will allow them to do more of that. 'For us, it's a way to expand our cargo business and trade,' Trutie said. The new center has the capacity to handle over 1.5 million tons of agricultural cargo annually, Greg Chin, communications director for Miami-Date Aviation Department, told the Herald. That's half the 3 million tons the airport received in 2024. Booming Valentine's Day MIA is growing, not just in passenger volume, but in freight, and it seeks to keep up with rising demand. The amount of cargo it handled in 2024 was a record for the fifth straight year. That included the vast majority of fresh-cut flowers the U.S. imports for Valentine's Day and Mother's Day. By Valentine's Day 2025, airport officials estimated that more than 90,000 tons of fresh-cut flowers arrived at the airport. That was also a new record for MIA, 3% higher than the previous record set in 2023. It totaled about $400 million in value. Fed Ex Private companies have taken notice. MIA is the site of FedEx's largest 'cold chain operation' worldwide, Basil Khalil, vice president of operations for FedEx Caribbean and Central America, told the Herald in February. About three years ago, the shipping company made a big bet on Miami by doubling the size of its cargo facility at MIA, said the Miami-based executive. That brought it to over 280,000 square feet. FedEx has more than 500 employees at the site. 'The flower industry helps employ thousands of people in Colombia and here at MIA,' Khalil said. It's not only during Valentine's Day that bouquets come in. Several hundred airport, seaports and border crossings handle international trade, yet MIA stands out. In 2024, the U.S. imported $2.26 billion in fresh-cut flowers, an increase in value of 9% compared to 2023, according to data provided by Ken Roberts, founder and CEO of WorldCity, a data and media company that hosts the website. MIA handled a whopping 81% of that. Colombian carrier Avianca Cargo and LATAM Cargo both have robust operations at MIA. DHL Express is growing, too. MIA has other works in progress for boosting cargo capacity. In July 2024, the Miami-Dade County Commission approved a lease agreement with Miami Gateway Partners, LLC, to build a four-story cargo facility that would increase Miami International Airport's storage capacity by 2 million tons. PortMiami PortMiami is growing its cargo business as well. It traded with 149 nations and handled about 10 million tons of freight in 2024. The space that broke ground on Monday — drawing officials including Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart and Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava — more directly benefits perishables. The complex will include a cold chain processing facility that provides cold storage, warehousing, distribution and other services for perishable goods. When the facility is complete, it will increase temperature-controlled storage space at MIA by as much as 34%, to 521,000 square feet, Chin said. The cold storage area will cover about 80% of the new space. The remaining 20% will be a new area to eradicate pests from refrigerated cargo containers and air cargo pallets. That treatment area will utilize non-chemical 'advanced treatments and inspection capabilities' to speed up inspections of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and other plant-based perishable items, said Trutie, the PortMiami spokesperson. This will mark a change from the chemical treatment used today. The Norcross, Georgia-based company Reveam will be brought in, providing a new pasteurization technology for fresh produce it developed that doesn't use chemicals or heat, but electrons. The treatments are certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and meant to expedite inspections for 'invasive pests and diseases that threaten U.S. agriculture.' The new cold storage complex is expected to result in 200 new jobs. It'll have environmental benefits too: The early pest and disease detection will help preserve native ecosystems. And 'it's going to reduce spoilage and inspection delays,' Levine Cava said at the ceremony on Monday.
