Pembrokeshire junior chess players impress in face off
Pembrokeshire Chess Club juniors faced off against Castell Nedd in an afternoon of chess.
Young players from Pembrokeshire Chess Club went head-to-head with their counterparts from the Castell Nedd Chess Club in a match which showcased promising young talent.

The event, held at the Cadoxton Community Centre, featured a total of 10 junior players who had previously made the trip down the previous year.
Across every board, the standard of play was impressive, particularly in the top tiers, with the more experienced Castell Nedd Chess Club players offering stiff competition.
The day saw each player take on four games against different opponents or with distinct colour orientations.
For the Pembrokeshire team, the youngest and least experienced players faced some formidable adversaries on the bottom four boards.
However, amidst these challenging circumstances, Ethan and Leon delivered impressive victories, while Blake and Matvii, contributed admirably.

Displaying notable attacking prowess, Suki on board six emerged victorious in two out of four games.
Castell Nedd Chess Club's top-level players, some of whom hold impressive rankings between 1300 and 1400, were a strong match for the top Pembrokeshire players.
Despite this, the Pembrokeshire juniors managed to slightly outperform Castell Nedd Chess Club across the top five boards, by a margin of 10.5 to 9.5.
Nevertheless, Castell Nedd Chess Club was declared the overall winners on the day with a marginal victory of three games to one.
Notably, Sebastian and Osian, both newcomers to the club, displayed remarkable talent with both winning three out of four matches.

Jude also fared well with two victories and a draw, and Harry won twice.
Young talent Joe Othen, who at under eight years played on board one and two, secured a win and a draw against the impressive Vikktoria.
The standout match of the day was Harry versus Vikktoria.
The match delighted spectators and coaches with its series of complex moves.
Martin Jones, Pembrokeshire Chess Club coach, praised the development of all players.
The anticipated annual fixture is set to continue, with Castell Nedd Chess Club juniors expected to visit Pembrokeshire Chess Club juniors next year.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the information has not been made public. Brailsford, who was credited for his role in British cycling's spectacular Olympic success in recent years, was a key component of billionaire Jim Ratcliffe's United overhaul following his minority investment in the club last year. But things haven't gone to plan, with the 20-time English champion suffering its lowest finish in the Premier League era last season — 15th — and recording its lowest points total and highest number of losses. Brailsford, who is also sporting director for Ratcliffe's petrochemicals firm INEOS, will remain in that role and also as a United director. Manchester United make first bid worth up to £55m for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo
Manchester United have submitted an opening offer to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. The proposal values Mbeumo at £45million plus £10m in add-ons, which is some way below the kind of fee it would take for Brentford to consider selling their Cameroon international forward. But talks are ongoing as United work to reach an agreement for a player targeted by head coach Ruben Amorim to strengthen his attacking unit. Advertisement Mbeumo, 25, has a year left on his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium — plus an option to extend by 12 months — but is keen on moving to Old Trafford if the clubs can strike a compromise. The Athletic previously reported that the 25-year-old wanted to join United and that the Old Trafford club were set to open talks with Brentford as they pursue an agreement to sign the forward this summer. He enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2024-25, scoring 20 goals and adding eight assists as Brentford finished 10th. Thomas Frank has been open that the club would be open to selling Mbeumo, but only if their valuation is met.
