Steelers among the oldest teams in the NFL in 2024
If you want to be a great NFL team, you have to have a nice blend of old and young talent. The more great young players you have, the better your salary cap situation, which allows teams to pay big money to those top-tier veterans. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, they haven't quite figured out this formula and while they remain one of the older teams in the league, it is more about trying to stay relevant with older players while still struggling to develop young stars. To illustrate where Pittsburgh falls in terms of age, here is the NFL ranked by average age at the start of the 2024 NFL season. I might not seem like much when the youngest team from last season was the Green Bay Packers at 24.9 years old, and the oldest, the Miami Dolphins, at 27.3 years old. But in football years, the difference between a 24-year-old player and a 27-year-old player is light years. Last season, the Steelers were the 29th-oldest team in the NFL. Pembrokeshire junior chess players impress in face off
Pembrokeshire Chess Club juniors faced off against Castell Nedd in an afternoon of chess. Young players from Pembrokeshire Chess Club went head-to-head with their counterparts from the Castell Nedd Chess Club in a match which showcased promising young talent. Advertisement The event, held at the Cadoxton Community Centre, featured a total of 10 junior players who had previously made the trip down the previous year. Across every board, the standard of play was impressive, particularly in the top tiers, with the more experienced Castell Nedd Chess Club players offering stiff competition. The day saw each player take on four games against different opponents or with distinct colour orientations. For the Pembrokeshire team, the youngest and least experienced players faced some formidable adversaries on the bottom four boards. However, amidst these challenging circumstances, Ethan and Leon delivered impressive victories, while Blake and Matvii, contributed admirably. Advertisement Displaying notable attacking prowess, Suki on board six emerged victorious in two out of four games. Castell Nedd Chess Club's top-level players, some of whom hold impressive rankings between 1300 and 1400, were a strong match for the top Pembrokeshire players. Despite this, the Pembrokeshire juniors managed to slightly outperform Castell Nedd Chess Club across the top five boards, by a margin of 10.5 to 9.5. Nevertheless, Castell Nedd Chess Club was declared the overall winners on the day with a marginal victory of three games to one. Notably, Sebastian and Osian, both newcomers to the club, displayed remarkable talent with both winning three out of four matches. Advertisement Jude also fared well with two victories and a draw, and Harry won twice. Young talent Joe Othen, who at under eight years played on board one and two, secured a win and a draw against the impressive Vikktoria. The standout match of the day was Harry versus Vikktoria. The match delighted spectators and coaches with its series of complex moves. Martin Jones, Pembrokeshire Chess Club coach, praised the development of all players. The anticipated annual fixture is set to continue, with Castell Nedd Chess Club juniors expected to visit Pembrokeshire Chess Club juniors next year. Chess matches like this promise to be a positive advertisement for junior chess in the region. Pembrokeshire Chess Club juniors will now be on a summer hiatus, resuming activities in late August or early September.

NZ hand young talent contracts as big guns remain casual
June 3 (Reuters) - New Zealand Cricket has handed a quartet of young talents central contracts for the 2025-2026 season as more established players such as Kane Williamson and Devon Conway continue to opt for casual deals. All-rounders Muhammad Abbas and Zak Foulkes, wicketkeeper Mitch Hay and leg-spinner Adithya Ashok were all included for the first time when the 20-strong list of centrally contracted players was released on Tuesday. Abbas, 21, hit 52 of 26 balls on his one-day international debut against Pakistan in March and also took the wicket of Mohammad Rizwan with his left-arm pace. Foulkes, 22, played his first internationals last year, while 24-year-old Hay scored an unbeaten 99 against Pakistan in an ODI in April. The inclusion of 22-year-old Ashok, who made his international debut in 2023, contributed to the absence from the list of more experienced spinners Ish Sodhi and Ajaz Patel. Batting all-rounder Josh Clarkson and former skipper Tim Southee, who has retired, were the other changes from last year's list. "The contracts with Mitch, Muhammad, Adi and Zak reflect the incredible talent coming through our system," NZC chief executive Scott Weenink said in a press release. "These players have shown they can compete at the highest level, and their hunger to represent the Black Caps is exciting. "We're thrilled to see this group drive our team forward." NZC said Williamson, Conway, Finn Allen, Tim Seifert and Lockie Ferguson were all in negotiations over casual contracts, which will enable them to take part in lucrative Twenty20 leagues around the world as well as represent their country. New Zealand next play a T20 tri-series with Zimbabwe and South Africa in Harare in July followed by a two-test series against the hosts.
