Leah Williamson insists ‘standards are high' in inexperienced England squad

The Lionesses have faced a whirlwind few weeks after goalkeeper Mary Earps and playmaker Fran Kirby announced their international retirement, while defender Millie Bright pulled out to prioritise her mental health.
There are also seven new faces taking part in their first major tournament in Switzerland – Michelle Agyemang, Aggie Beever-Jones, Grace Clinton, Khiara Keating, Maya le Tissier, Anna Moorhouse and Jess Park.

Preparations are well under way for Sarina Wiegman's side, who will begin the defence of their European crown against France on July 5.
Asked what the mood is like with so many changes in camp, Williamson said: 'Everyone has a good attitude towards the job. This week is graft and then next week you start really focusing and honing in on the tournament.
'It's a fresh team in that sense. We probably carry less as a team now in terms of the experiences people have had, but I also see a group that is focused and wants to be better all the time.
'The standards are high, the standards from the more experienced players. It was a great session today and then it gets a bit more exciting, come Monday.'
Williamson played a major part in England's Euro 2022 success but was ruled out of the entire World Cup campaign two years ago as the Lionesses made it to the final before losing to Spain.
The 28-year-old ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament just three months before that tournament and is excited to be back with the group.
She added: 'Personally, it's been a rocky period of time, like highest of highs and lowest of lows.
'I try and put that aside and I think it's a very different scenario now.
'I feel my age, if that makes sense, like I've definitely aged in the last couple of years for good and bad reasons. But it does feel slightly different. It's slightly different vibes, but I'm so excited to be back.
'I'm still keeping my head down and focusing on staying healthy and being in a good place. But I missed the last time and I'm very, very grateful to be here again.'
Williamson enjoyed a successful season with Arsenal and was part of the team that helped the Gunners to European glory as they beat Barcelona 1-0 in the Champions League final last month.
The Lionesses skipper insists she is now hungry for more success.
'I think one of the greatest things about being an athlete is that when you think you're done, you always have that extra part of yourself that you can tap into,' she said.
'You win and you think you want to just bathe in that euphoria. But there's always something else coming, and the best feeling in the world is being hungry for it, and I'm wanting to go again, winning in the summer.
'Being reminded of what that feels like (the Champions League win), I can't wait for the next challenge.'

Bernard Lacombe dead at 72: Legendary France striker who won Euro 1984 passes away as tributes flood in

Legendary former France international Bernard Lacombe has passed away at the age of 72. The prolific striker is perhaps best remembered as one of the victorious European Champions of 1984 alongside Michel Platini, and netted 12 times for Les Bleus in his 38 international appearances. One of those strikes remains a record-breaker today, after Lacombe scored within 30 seconds of the World Cup clash with Italy back in 1978, France's fastest at football's greatest competition. Beyond success on the international scene, Lacombe was known in the seventies and eighties as one of the most lethal forwards in France. In fact, he has the second-most goals of any player in Ligue 1 history, registering 255 strikes in 497 appearances across stints with Lyon, Saint-Etienne and Bordeaux. French giants Lyon, where he played 258 times, paid tribute to their former star and manager on social media in the wake of the tragic news. 'It is with immense sadness that we learned on Tuesday evening of the passing of Bernard Lacombe,' they wrote. 'All our thoughts are with his family and loved ones, as well as with the fans of Olympique Lyonnais and football. 'Rest in peace, Bernard.' After hanging up his boots, Lacombe went on to manage Lyon - where he came through the ranks having been born in the city - for four years between 1996 and 2000, winning the Intertoto Cup in 1997. He would also spend 20 years as a special advisor to owner Jean-Michel Aulas, and was reportedly crucial to the retention of a number of the club's Brazilian players, such as Juninho. French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo, added an emotive response to the news, saying: 'It is with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Bernard Lacombe. Bernard Lacombe left an indelible mark on French football, as a player, coach, and manager. 'He was one of the greatest strikers in the history of French football. The second-highest scorer in Division 1, he made his mark on the glorious history of Lyon, Saint-Étienne, and Bordeaux. He also shone with the French national team. His goals helped establish Les Bleus on the international stage. 'Bernard Lacombe was a major contributor to the 1984 European Championship title. He performed some of France's greatest feats, including his goal in the opening seconds of the game against Italy at the 1978 World Cup. He was undoubtedly a source of inspiration for many strikers. 'After his remarkable playing career, Bernard Lacombe put his footballing knowledge to work for Olympique Lyonnais, his beloved club. 'With Jean-Michel Aulas, whom I am thinking of very much in these difficult moments, he formed a duo that transformed OL into a successful club. 'Deeply attached to his city, his club, and his friends, Bernard Lacombe will be deeply missed. 'The Federation will pay tribute to him. On behalf of all French football, I extend my most sincere condolences to his family and friends.' Bordeaux, for whom he featured 297 times and scored 137 goals, added on X: 'With immense sadness, Bernard Lacombe has just left us at the age of 72. 'Having played for [Bordeaux] between 1979 and 1987, this legendary striker left his mark on the club's history with his talent and generosity. 'The entire Marine et Blanc family mourns today a striker of rare elegance, one of the greatest players in the club's history. Thank you, Bernard.'

Arsenal refuse to meet Benjamin Sesko demands after 'freezing' Gyokeres move

RB Leipzig are demanding up to €100million (£86m) for Benjamin Sesko this summer – demands Arsenal are refusing to meet. Signing a new centre forward has been a top priority for the Gunners with Sesko and Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres identified as their leading targets. Arsenal have explored a move for Gyokeres but a bitter row between the Sweden international and his club has threatened to derail any move. Sesko is reportedly Mikel Arteta's first choice target to lead his attack next season but the club are still to make an official offer for the 22-year-old. Sky Sports Germany report Leipzig's asking price now stands at a fee between €80m and €100m (£69m to £86m), a price Arsenal are not currently prepared to pay. The club have remained in contact with Sesko's camp but there is also still no full agreement over personal terms. While Sesko is 'attracted to the possibility' of playing for Arsenal with Champions League football also on offer, the striker is said to be relaxed over the situation and will not attempt to force a move to north London. Arsenal have long-standing interest in Sesko, opting against a move in January due to a gentleman's agreement with Leipzig to allow him to stay at the German side until at least the summer. The Slovenia international was also close to leaving last summer but opted to sign a new contract, removing a previous release clause of £55m. Arsenal meanwhile have also been exploring a move for Gyokeres, who has become embroiled in a bitter feud with Sporting over a proposed transfer fee for the player. Sporting president Frederico Varandas has denied the existence of an agreement that would have allowed Gyokeres to leave the club for a fee of €60 plus €10m in add-ons this summer, much to the frustration of the striker and his agent Hasan Cetinkaya. More Trending Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, met with Sporting officials last week to discuss a deal. Arsenal's initial proposal worth an €55m (£46.8m) plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons was rejected but an improved offer was expected. However, the ongoing row between Sporting, Gyokeres and his agent and the uncertainty over what fee it would take to prise him from Lisbon has promoted Arsenal to 'freeze' their pursuit, according to latest reports in Portugal.
