Joaquin Niemann wins LIV Golf Adelaide; Fireballs GC claims team title

Fox Sports16-02-2025
ADELAIDE, South Australia – Joaquin Niemann began Sunday's final round of LIV Golf Adelaide three strokes off the lead. That left him with a fairly straightforward objective.
"Do something special," the Torque GC captain said.
Task completed.
Niemann produced the day's only bogey-free round, shooting a 7-under 65 to eventually reel in Fireballs GC's Abraham Ancer , who led the majority of the day until suffering three bogeys on his final five holes. Niemann's 13 under total was good enough for a three-shot victory over Ancer and Torque teammate Carlos Ortiz , who each shot 71.
It's the second straight LIV Golf season in which Niemann has posted an early victory. A year ago, he won the first and third events of the season and led the season-long points standing until finishing second to Legion XIII Captain Jon Rahm in the Individual Championship.
Two months ago, Niemann won the PIF Saudi International presented by SoftBank Investment Advisers and also won the season-long International Series championship. He said his current form is better than a year ago – and that he'll only keep improving.
"Days like today make me grow as a player," said Niemann, who won for the second time in his career in Australia, having captured the Australian Open in 2023. "There is a lot I have to take from today and learn from it because today was a really good day. If I could have these Sundays more often, chasing leaders, it would be really good for my game."
Ancer, also a former Australian Open champ, was still able to celebrate atop the Adelaide podium, with the Fireballs claiming the team title by six strokes over Rahm's Legion XIII, with Torque finishing third.
"Obviously the last two holes were rough to finish with bogey-bogey, having a chance to win the tournament," said Ancer, who'll enter LIV Golf's next tournament in Hong Kong as the defending champion. "It's always tough, but I think it's just fuel for the rest of the season. I feel like my game is trending in the right direction. I like where things are headed."
Ancer shared the 36-hole lead with Ortiz and Majesticks GC's Sam Horsfield but took command early with birdies in his first two holes. He remained bogey-free until finding the bunker at the par-3 14th and failing to get up-and-down.
Niemann, playing in the group ahead of Ancer, posted his sixth birdie of the day at the 15th to grab the solo lead. His iron play was terrific Sunday, as he hit 16 of 18 greens in regulation. His 65 tied for the low round of the day with Riyadh winner Adrian Meronk.
"The way I played today, I feel like it talks a lot on how I've been working, how I've been practicing," Niemann said. "Being able to see those little steps forward all the time, it's always satisfying."
The Fireballs certainly were satisfied after winning their fifth tournament in club history, four of them on different continents. They're also the only team to have won at least one team title in all four LIV Golf seasons. Captain Sergio Garcia and David Puig each shot 5-under 67s, while Ancer and newcomer Luis Masaveu, the 22-year-old, shot 71s.
"Bittersweet with Abe, the way he played," Garcia said. "He was there the whole day, and it would have been nice to get the double. But super proud of the way they all fought."
For Masaveu, Sunday's champagne celebration in front of the massive Adelaide crowd was part of his indoctrination into LIV Golf. "I asked what I needed to do because it was the first time," he said. "But I think I did it all right."
Smiled Garcia: "Quick learner."

Trump National Doral returns to PGA Tour in 2026 with Miami Championship

The Blue Monster is back on the PGA Tour calendar for 2026. Tour officials unveiled the schedule for its upcoming season on Tuesday, Aug. 19, and among the 35 official FedEx Cup events is a return to Trump National Doral near Miami. A new event – tentatively called the Miami Championship – will be played at the course owned by President Donald Trump from April 30-May 3, 2026. "We're excited to showcase the game's greatest players competing at golf's most iconic venues," CEO Brian Rolapp said. Trump National Doral has been the home of an annual LIV Golf tournament each of the past four years, but won't be part of that tour's 2026 schedule. The famed Blue Monster course hosted PGA Tour events from 1962-2016 before being dropped from the schedule when title sponsor Cadillac declined to renew and a replacement couldn't be found. Around that same time, Trump upset Tour officials by making derogatory statements about certain ethnic groups during his campaign for president. The event was subsequently moved to Mexico and renamed the VidantaWorld Mexico Open. With the introduction of the Miami Championship to the PGA Tour's regular-season schedule, the Mexico Open will be contested as part of the FedEx Cup Fall slate. The new tournament at Doral does not yet have a title sponsor, but sources tell Golfweek one is expected to be announced in the coming months, well before the tournament. 2026 PGA Tour signature events 2026 men's golf major tournaments 2026 FedEx Cup playoffs 2026 Presidents Cup

Donald Trump-owned courses will host PGA Tour, LIV Golf tournaments next year

Donald Trump will be hosting events on the PGA Tour and LIV Golf for the first time in the same season in 2026. LIV Golf will return to Trump National Golf Club Washington D.C., in Sterling, Virginia, next year. The PGA Tour is expected to host an event at Trump National Doral, outside of Miami. LIV will return to Virginia for the second time with the 2026 event scheduled for May 8-10. The Saudi Arabia-backed tour has had at least one event on a course owned by the president every year since its inception in 2022. The Tour is expected to return to Doral in 2026, according to Sports Business Journal. The publication reported the event is expected to be April 27-May 3, three weeks after the Masters and two weeks before the PGA Championship. The tournament potentially will be a signature event with a $20 million purse. LIV is pulling out of Doral for 2026, the first time it will not hold a tournament at the course. The PGA Tour had a 54-year history at Doral before pulling out following the 2016 World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship and after losing its title sponsor. The move also came following then-presidential candidate Trump's discriminatory statements about Mexicans and Muslims, giving the Tour even more reason to separate itself from Trump. After missing Tour Championship, Xander Schauffele weighing start before Ryder Cup

Was the fan behavior at the BMW Championship a "harbinger" for things to come at the Ryder Cup? Joel Beall discusses this and his read on Keegan Bradley's captains picks for Team USA, including himself. Xander Schauffele isn't at East Lake for the first time in his career, the result of a rib injury that cost him two months at the start of the season. He never quite found any momentum in his game with his swing out of sync. 'It would be nice to have three months off. That would be ideal if we were being honest,' Schauffele said at the BMW Championship . 'I feel like I need to get as far away from golf as possible very soon. That's how I feel.' That's not the reality, however. Schauffele had such a big year in the majors last year — winning the PGA Championship and The Open, top-10 finishes in the other two — that he was among the first to clinch a spot on the Ryder Cup team. Three months? The Ryder Cup starts in 38 days. Schauffele was among the players who confirmed to The Associated Press in July that the U.S. team planned to play at the Procore Championship in Napa, California, the week of Sept. 8-14, two weeks before the Ryder Cup. The exception would be Bryson DeChambeau, suspended when he bolted to Saudi-funded LIV Golf in 2022 and then was among those who sued the PGA Tour. It might also be missing Schauffele. 'I'm not sure,' Schauffele said when asked if he would be there. 'I haven't signed up yet. It would be nice to play, but if I don't think playing is going to help me, then I won't play.' Despite his recovery from a rib injury that led to his swing getting out of sorts, Schauffele extended his cut streak to 71 — exactly halfway to the record held by Tiger Woods. He also managed six finishes in the top 12 and two top-10s in the majors. 'I think I understand more than I did before,' he said. 'The frustration before was more not understanding why I was doing certain things. Now I know why I'm hitting it bad and don't know how to fix it. So, frustration for different reasons. I don't know what's worse.' He kept his attitude in good shape — the California native is renowned for his positive attitude regardless of his results — and he looks forward to sorting it out. 'I love golf. I love trying to figure it out,' he said. 'But it's been a trying year. I definitely need to hit the reset button. The next step will be to come back with a solid plan and stick to it.'
