Magda Linette upsets No. 4 Jessica Pegula at Cincinnati Open
Poland's Magda Linette, the 31st seed, knocked out fourth-seeded American Jessica Pegula 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3 in third-round action of the Cincinnati Open on Wednesday in Mason, Ohio.
The match was carried over from Tuesday due to inclement weather in the area. It started Wednesday afternoon at the onset of the third set. Up 4-3 in the deciding set, Linette broke Pegula and then served out the match to advance into the Round of 16.
In her fourth career match against Pegula, it was the first time Linette won, or even took a set, off the American.
'It feels so good. I had so many tough matches on this court,' Linette said. 'I lost so many three-setters. I never really got close to getting a set off her before. To me, it means so much.
'She's such an unbelievable ballstriker and competitor. Unbelievable person off the court. I just feel this day is really special that I got the chance to beat her.'
Pegula, who advanced to her first Grand Slam final in last year's U.S. Open, failed to advance out of the Round of 32 in the National Bank Open in Montreal or Cincinnati Open, the two lead-up events to this year's U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 24.
In other action, No. 3 seed Iga Swiatek of Poland coasted past Romania's Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-3 to become the first player to punch her ticket to the quarterfinals, She awaits the winner of an all-Russian matchup between No. 12 Ekaterina Alexandrova and No. 28 Anna Kalinskaya which was being contested later Wednesday.
Veronika Kudermetova of Russia rallied to upset No. 16 Clara Tauson of Denmark 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Kudermetova didn't face a break point and lost just three service points in the deciding third set.
In night action, sixth-seeded American Madison Keys faces No. 9 seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan, No. 1 seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus faces Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain, and Alexandrova and Kalinskaya face off.

Cincinnati [US], August 16 (ANI): Alexander Zverev secured a Cincinnati Open semifinal clash against Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz as he secured an easy win over Toronto champion Ben Shelton on early Saturday morning. Zverev went past Shelton with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-2, needing just an hour and 17 minutes to end the American's nine-match winning streak and secure his fourth successive semifinal appearance in the past four tournaments. During the second set, Zverev struggled with his health and breathing and called for a doctor. Speaking after the match, Zverev, the 2021 champion in Cincinnati said as quoted by ATP's official website, 'Right now I am not feeling too great. I am not sure what happened. I came out today and probably felt the best I have felt in a few months. Was feeling the ball incredibly well from both sides. In the first set I started feeling not so great and it got progressively worse. But I am in the semi-finals and I will do everything I can to be 100 per cent tomorrow.' After failing to win his first six matches here in this competition, Zverev marked a brilliant turnaround with 16 wins in his next 18 outings. His two losses were a tight, two-set loss to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the 2023 edition semifinal and a third-set tie-break loss in the semifinal to Jannik Sinner last year, who went on to win the title. His record against Shelton also improved to four wins in four matches. On the other hand, Alcaraz booked his semifinal spot in a nervy, error-filled outing against Andrey Rublev. The number two in the world has seen his share of highs and lows in the tournament. But Alcaraz prevailed by 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in a match that went to an exciting decider, despite the 15 unforced errors and three double faults in the final set. This is Alcaraz's 12th ATP Masters 1000 semifinal appearance. Zverev has a slight edge over Alcaraz in head-to-head with 6-5. Alejandro Kirk's 4 RBIs help Blue Jays rally past Rangers

Kirk hit a two-run homer in the seventh and hit the go-ahead two-run single in the four-run eighth to help Toronto win the opener of a three-game series. Kyle Higashioka hit a three-run home run, and Marcus Semien hit a two-run blast for the Rangers. Toronto right fielder Nathan Lukes helped Chris Bassitt on two successive plays. Lukes made a leaping catch at the wall with a runner at first on Joc Pederson's drive for the third out of the first. Lukes made another good play when Evan Carter led off the second with a shot off the wall, but was thrown out trying for a double. Bassitt needed the help. He hit the next batter, Semien, with a pitch and walked Rowdy Tellez. With two out, Higashioka launched an 0-1 center-cut cutter to left for a homer. Jacob deGrom overcame Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s leadoff double in the fourth with two strikeouts and a groundout. Bassitt worked around a walk to complete five innings in which he allowed three runs, four hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Cole Winn took over in the sixth from deGrom, who allowed no runs, two hits and no walks with five strikeouts in five innings.
