The government has officially designated May 16 as a "Youm-e-Tashakur" (Day of Gratitude) to commemorate the significant achievements in Operation Bunyanum Marsoos and Ma'araka-e-Haq, while making it clear that no public holiday will be observed on the day.
Youm-e-Tashakur will be celebrated across the country on Friday, to honour the historic victory of Marka-e-Haq and pay tribute to the valiant armed forces and people of Pakistan, Radio Pakistan reported on Thursday.
Following the announcement, a notification began circulating widely on social media, claiming that May 16 would be observed as a public holiday across the country, with all schools and offices closed.
However, official government sources have dismissed these claims, clarifying that there will be no public holiday on May 16. Authorities have stated unequivocally that the viral notification is fake, and no such directive has been issued.
"The Day of Gratitude will be observed at a national level, but it does not entail a general holiday," the sources confirmed, urging citizens to rely on verified channels for accurate information.

Doctors reject imposition of professional tax
Various medics associations in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa have rejected professional tax imposed on doctors by the provincial government of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). President of the Pakistan Doctors Council K-P chapter, Dr Majid, addressed a joint press conference at the Peshawar Press Club Wednesday alongside leaders from doctors' organizations, including Dr Janbaz Afridi of the Peoples Doctors Forum, Dr Adil of the Young Doctors Association, and Dr Wasim of the Allied Doctors. Dr Majid strongly condemned the provincial government of PTI for imposing an oppressive professional tax on doctors. He said the Doctors Council categorically rejects this tax and has formed a three-member committee to negotiate with the government for its immediate withdrawal. He also demanded the cessation of ongoing actions related to this tax. The council called on the government to immediately revoke letters issued by the Excise and Taxation Department directing deductions from doctors' salaries, particularly concerning finance directors and accountants of Medical Teaching Institutes (MTIs) in K-P. He further demanded salary increases for all doctors in the province, including house officers, trainee medical officers, and medical officers, in keeping with the current inflation rate in the provincial budget. He urged the Health Care Commission to immediately stop imposing heavy fines on doctors under the pretext of registration and to develop a proper, consultative procedure for such matters. Highlighting ongoing harassment of doctors over drug sales licenses, Majid demanded a halt to these practices and urged the government to implement court rulings favoring doctors in this regard. The president criticized the Public Service Commission (PSC) for not advertising any job vacancies since 2017, calling it a grave injustice to aspiring medical professionals. He demanded that job postings resume immediately to recruit new doctors.

NEC approves national development budget worth Rs4.22trn for next fiscal year
The National Economic Council (NEC) on Wednesday unanimously approved six-agenda items, including national development budget worth Rs4.224 trillion for the next fiscal year (FY26), Radio Pakistan reported. The approval was granted at the NEC meeting held in Islamabad with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the chair and with all the four provincial chief ministers of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan in the presence. It was told that Rs1 trillion would be earmarked for the federal and Rs2.87 trillion for the provincial development projects. Unregistered taxpayers: 4% 'further sales tax' to be abolished The forum also approved macroeconomic framework and targets for the next fiscal year. The council directed relevant ministries, provinces, and government institutions to work in collaboration with the Ministry of Planning to achieve the targets set in the proposed annual plan for 2025-2026. The development projects would prioritise health, education, infrastructure, the water sector, and housing, Radio Pakistan reported. The NEC gave approval to the 13th five-year development plan and the Uraan Pakistan Framework, it said. As per the details, a third-party monitoring report on the annual National Development Programme was presented, and the meeting decided that future project planning should incorporate the recommendations of the report. The NEC also approved a gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate of 2.7% for the outgoing fiscal year and a projected growth rate of 4.2% for the next financial year. During the meeting, revised indicators regarding the performance of the economy in outgoing fiscal year 2024-25 were presented. The meeting was informed that Rs3.483 trillion was being spent on the annual national development, of which Rs1.100 trillion was share of the federation and Rs2.383 trillion was the share of provinces. Budget talks with IMF successful: PM Shehbaz The meeting was told that remittances increased by Rs30.9% from July 2024 to April 2025 and the current account balance remained positive for the first time. The fiscal deficit in the year 2024-25 further decreased to 2.6% of the GDP, while the primary balance remained 3% of the GDP after increase. The policy rate gradually decreased to 11% due to government policies, while loans given for private sector development increased to Rs681 billion from July 2024 to May 2025. The volume of GDP in 2024-25 will be Rs114 trillion.

Tump assistant commissioner abducted from near Tigranabad, Balochistan
Armed men abducted Tump Assistant Commissioner Hanif Noorzai on Wednesday morning near Tigranabad as he was traveling with his family to Quetta, according to local sources. Eyewitnesses report that between six to eight armed individuals stopped his official vehicle, took him away at gunpoint, and fled with the car. His wife, driver, and official gunman were left at the site and remain unharmed. The incident has prompted a swift response from security forces, who have launched a large-scale search operation in the area. Snap-checking has begun along Zubaida Jalal Road and nearby routes, while intelligence-based efforts are being used to track the abductors. The abduction of a senior government officer has raised concerns over the safety of civil servants in Balochistan, particularly in the Makran region. Authorities have not yet identified those responsible, and no group has claimed responsibility as of now. Efforts to locate and safely recover Assistant Commissioner Noorzai are ongoing. Earlier this week, seven terrorists allegedly affiliated with the India-backed group Fitna al-Hindustan were killed in two separate operations in Balochistan on June 2, 2025. Earlier, the federal government had officially designated all terrorist groups operating in Balochistan as 'Fitna al Hindustan', accusing India of sponsoring a proxy war through these outfits. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Interior, the move stems from 'the involvement of some organizations and groups in terrorist activities in Balochistan, which are detrimental to Islamic faith, the sovereignty of Pakistan, and its customary traditions'. The notification further stated that the new designation is intended to reflect 'the true nature and ideology' of these groups and their 'nefarious designs' sponsored by India. 'All government entities are directed to start the above practice immediately,' the notification said, underscoring a concerted effort to reframe the narrative around insurgent violence in the province. The announcement came after Islamabad accused India of escalating indirect aggression after what he described as its defeat in a recent security operation dubbed "Marka-e-Haq'.
