NBC and Nigcomsat launch satellite plan to transform broadcasting
For the first time, Nigerian households will gain access to high-quality digital broadcasts via affordable satellite dishes, hybrid devices, and internet-enabled set-top boxes.
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) have jointly introduced The Big Picture, a flagship initiative under Nigerias renewed Digital Switchover (DSO) project. Backed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and in line with his Renewed Hope Agenda, this strategic shift marks a significant step toward transforming Nigerias broadcasting landscape by leveraging the countrys sovereign satellite infrastructure.
At the heart of the initiative is NigComSat-1R, Nigerias only communications satellite in orbit, which will play a critical role in delivering Direct-to-Home (DTH) broadcasts across the entire Nigerian territory. This satellite-first approach eliminates the traditional dependence on terrestrial transmission towers, accelerating the nationwide rollout of digital broadcasting by over 65%. It also offers a scalable, cost-effective, and future-ready model for expanding digital access and promoting national storytelling.
Key figures, including NBCs Director-General, Barr Charles Ebuebu, and Nigcomsats Managing Director, Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, have welcomed this forward-thinking strategy, emphasising its importance in maximising the use of national satellite assets and ensuring inclusive access to digital content.
For the first time, millions of Nigerian households will be able to access high-quality digital broadcasts through affordable satellite dishes, hybrid set-top boxes, and internet-enabled devices. An estimated 10 million homes equipped with DVB-S2-compatible televisions or decoders will have immediate access to free-to-air channels, while others will benefit from next-generation hybrid devices that combine satellite feeds with online streaming capabilities.
These new branded devices are designed with the countrys youth-dominated demographic in mindover 60% of the population is under the age of 25. They will feature pre-installed apps, voice search functionality, parental controls, and seamless integration with NigComSats Electronic Programme Guide (EPG), offering an intuitive and engaging user experience.
In a data-driven upgrade to Nigerias broadcasting ecosystem, NBC is also partnering with global analytics firm GARB to introduce real-time audience measurement technology. This will enable broadcasters, advertisers and content creators to analyse viewership trends across regions and devices, helping to tailor content more effectively and drive higher audience engagement. The introduction of this system is expected to boost advertising revenue by as much as 300% by 2026.
The success of The Big Picture will rely on robust collaboration between public and private stakeholders. The Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) and other content partners are expected to supply 60% of programming for the new 120-channel platform, using both original and repurposed content. Meanwhile, local manufacturers will contribute by producing around 5 million compliant devices annually, a move projected to create over 20,000 jobs in assembly plants nationwide.
This ambitious initiative also dovetails with President Tinubus By-Nigeria industrial policy, aiming to stimulate local manufacturing, strengthen economic resilience, and champion Nigerian creativity and innovation. As the country transitions to a fully digital future, The Big Picture stands as a transformative blueprint for democratising access to information and revitalizing Nigerias cultural narrative through technology.

NIRSAL Plc, with support from the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, has launched a Feedlot Management Training Programme aimed at preparing the country's livestock value chain actors to tap into the $2.5 billion Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) deal recently sealed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with global meatpacking giant, JBS. This is in a bold move to position Nigeria as a leading supplier of quality beef to domestic and global markets. The first cohort of the training programme held in Abuja recently, comes at a critical moment when Nigeria is stepping into the spotlight as a global meat investment destination of choice. The JBS partnership will see six modern meat processing plants built across the country—with two dedicated to beef, ushering in increased demand for premium feedstock from local producers. Speaking at the opening session, Mr. Sa'ad Hamidu, Managing Director/CEO of NIRSAL Plc, laid out the program's strategic intent: 'This is not just another training; it is a targeted intervention aimed at creating bankable agribusinesses by improving feed formulation practices, reducing input waste, and optimizing livestock finishing cycles for increased market value. 'As it is, we are preparing Nigerian livestock producers to feed not just the nation, but the world. And this aligns directly with the Federal Government's vision for an agriculturally empowered, export-ready nation.' Amongst other accomplishments, the programme targets the production of export-grade meat in Nigeria, while improving the productivity and profitability of the producers. Though the $2.5 billion deal with JBS is the most notable in the series of investments bound for Nigeria's livestock sub-sector, it is not the only one. Local companies like ABIS Group are also making significant investments in the meat value chain, creating further demand for high-quality feedstock. Participants in the first cohort of the training program were drawn from the Ministry of Livestock Development, the Agric Department of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), National Association of Cattle Dealers, Processors & Marketers of Nigeria (NACDPMAN), Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria (AUFCDN), Maidoki Farms Ltd, and others. The Director of Ranch and Pastoral Resources Development in the Ministry of Livestock Development, Shekamang Ayuba, himself a participant, praised the training as 'eye-opening and apt', urging its expansion nationwide. Nigeria's livestock sector, rich in potential but hampered by outdated practices, poor-quality feed, and limited financing, stands on the brink of genuine transformation. Tinubu's reshaping Nigerian aviation for global competition —DG, NCAA
The Nigerian aviation industry has undergone significant transformation under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration. According to Captain Chris Ona Najomo, Director General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the government has prioritized aviation infrastructure development and regional airline partnerships as strategic tools to drive national economic growth, improve connectivity, and strengthen regional integration. Najomo highlighted the challenges African states face in balancing national carrier protectionism with the need for liberalization and regional connectivity, noting that these challenges stem from political, economic, regulatory, and infrastructural factors. He however said that the Nigerian government has taken steps to support the growth and sustenance of local airline businesses while holding them to the highest international standards in the aviation industry. The NCAA Director General also emphasized the importance of liberalizing air transport and implementing the Yamoussoukro Decision and the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM). He noted that many African states delay the implementation of SAATM due to fear of losing control of certain routes, which may negatively impact their national airlines. Najomo therefore said that the absence of economic regulations, lack of autonomous Civil Aviation Authorities, and visa barriers are major challenges to liberalisation. Despite these challenges, he said, the Nigerian government has made significant investments in aviation infrastructure development. He cited the rehabilitation and expansion of terminals at major international airports, including Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano, and Enugu, as examples of the government's commitment to improving airport infrastructure. He also noted that the government is exploring Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to concession key international airports, aimed at improving efficiency, infrastructure, and service delivery. The government, according to him, has also prioritized the development of new infrastructure, such as cargo terminals and free trade zones. He also highlighted the importance of expanding cargo facilities and integrating them with Special Economic Zones (SEZs) to promote exports. 'Additionally, the government is planning to develop airport cities around key airports to boost logistics, tourism, and commercial activities,' he said. In terms of safety, Najomo emphasized the government's commitment to investing in navigation and safety systems. He noted that the modernization of Air Navigation Services through the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) is ongoing, including the deployment of satellite-based navigation systems and upgrade of radar systems and communication infrastructure. The NCAA czar also highlighted Nigeria's commitment to supporting the Yamoussoukro Decision and SAATM. He noted that Nigeria has signed Bilateral Air Service Agreements (BASAs) with some of the 38 SAATM countries, including provisions for unrestricted first to fifth freedom traffic rights on passengers and full liberalization on cargo. He emphasized the importance of promoting the growth of domestic airlines, noting that the government is actively promoting the growth of domestic airlines through targeted policies, such as the 'Fly Nigeria Act,' aimed at prioritizing Nigerian airlines for government-sponsored air travel. Najomo also talked about the significance of domesticating the Cape Town Convention and signing the Irrevocable De-registration and Export Request Authorization (IDERA), which has increased Nigeria's score on the CTC Compliance Index and removed the country from the Aviation Working Group's watchlist of non-compliant countries. Overall, Najomo's position painted a picture of a Nigerian aviation industry that is poised for growth and development.
