This weekend: Fundraiser planned for man beaten by fake delivery drivers
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The Savannah bar and restaurant industry is coming together to support one of their own Sunday.
Local bartender Dirk Hardison was attacked by two pretend Amazon workers at his home on January 11th. The 66-year-old was hospitalized and received 14 stitches.
People in the service industry are known to stick up for one another and support each other during times of need. That's exactly what's happening at Boomy's Bar on Sunday.
People who don't even know Hardison, like bar owner Michelle Methot, are showing their support as he recovers from this attack.
'Helping out someone else in the industry who's fallen on hard times, it's just a no brainer,' Methot said.
The event this weekend will have baked goods for sale, a raffle and silent auction with all of the proceeds going to Hardison. This is just an example of the outpouring of love he's received.People have shared their memories of him along with their well wishes, many who call him by his nickname 'Bar Santa.'
Jamie Stroh, a friend of Hardison, helped organize this fundraiser. He says he can't imagine why anyone would do this.
'He's just a really laid-back guy,' Stroh said. 'He's extremely nice. I mean, he'd probably give his shirt off his back to anybody and everybody. I mean, he's just that kind of a guy.'
The event is happening this Sunday from 2-6 p.m. at 409 West Congress St. A GoFundMe has been set up as well.
Hardison is out of the hospital now but still recovering, according to a friend. Of the two men who allegedly beat him, only one has been arrested.

Dayton family recovering after driver crashes into living room
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A family is putting their life back together after a driver crashed through their front door and into their living room. When first responders arrived on scene around 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning, they found a truck lodged into the living room of the Donlow's home on Arlene Avenue. Nobody was hurt, but police suspect the driver was under the influence when the crash happened. That driver, who is now in custody, also hit two other cars in the process. The family says it's been a long few days recovering from that crash, but said this accident that demolished part of their home is not entirely a bad thing. 'The next thing we heard was a big boom, and we just hit the floor,' said Kimberly Donlow, homeowner. 'There was a vehicle in our living room.' Kimberly says she's been unable to work for days without pay, since she works from home and her workspace was destroyed, along with medical equipment she uses as well. But that morning, she remembers seeing the driver get out of the truck in her home and profusely apologizing for what had happened. Kimberly also remembers not being angry in the slightest. 'We're calm, we're not upset,' said Kimberly. 'We're calm because we walked away.' Since the crash, the entirety of their living room has been gutted and cleaned out, along with nearly everything in it. The Donlows say insurance can only replace some of it. But despite it all, they're keeping a positive outlook, saying that this is instead an opportunity for the person who hit their home to turn their life around. 'If you need help, you need help. Why put somebody in jail if you need that help?' said Kimberly. Police are currently working on filing charges against the driver, but none have been announced yet. When the driver does appear in court, the Donlows say they will be there on the driver's behalf. 'We can't be mad at him, upset or whatever,' said Dwayne Donlows, homeowner. 'Nobody lost their life. Material things, whatever got damaged, those things can be replaced.' 'It's a blessing and a testimony to what's going on in our life and what's going on in his life,' said Kimberly. 'The world is already rough as it is, so the best thing we can do is just pray and keep going.' Local perspective Stephanie Board was delivering packages for Amazon early Sunday morning. "I took the route that was from 3:15 a.m all the way until like seven o'clock, and I was almost done, so I was excited when I was on my route because I was like, ok, it's about 6:30-ish, I'm almost done. So here I am just determined to get it done and get back to my kids," delivery driver Stephanie Board said. She said she pulled up to a home in the Quail Creek Neighborhood in North Austin, her car was still running. "I'm just thinking, you know, I'm going to hop in and out real quickly," Board said. Board said she grabbed the package out of her car, walked to the front door, dropped it off, and scanned it. When she turned around, Board said, "I look up and I see a guy that I've never seen before. He hops out of a Mercedes, I think it was, and he gets into the driver's side of my car." Board said she tried to stop the man. "I kind of try to get in front of him to stop him from taking the vehicle, but he still goes around and leaves in the vehicle," Board said. She said it felt like a movie. "Panicking, nervous, just disbelief and distraught that something like this was happening," Board said. Apparently, her car had all of her personal items inside, including her credit, debit, and social security cards. "I see that they are currently using my EBT card. They were at the local Sam's that was out south, and it looks like they were at some supermarkets here in the East Austin area, so they're all over Austin, so you might want to just be mindful," Board said. Board and her son have a message to whoever is behind this. "Just do the right thing and return the car because you've taken away from a mother that's trying to support her kids and have a survival for them and stable living," Board said. "I would just like for the person to just give us our car," Board's son, Demarion Ewing said.
