AUSTIN, Texas - An Amazon Flex delivery driver said her car was stolen while she was dropping off packages.
Local perspective
Stephanie Board was delivering packages for Amazon early Sunday morning.
"I took the route that was from 3:15 a.m all the way until like seven o'clock, and I was almost done, so I was excited when I was on my route because I was like, ok, it's about 6:30-ish, I'm almost done. So here I am just determined to get it done and get back to my kids," delivery driver Stephanie Board said.
She said she pulled up to a home in the Quail Creek Neighborhood in North Austin, her car was still running.
"I'm just thinking, you know, I'm going to hop in and out real quickly," Board said.
Board said she grabbed the package out of her car, walked to the front door, dropped it off, and scanned it.
When she turned around, Board said, "I look up and I see a guy that I've never seen before. He hops out of a Mercedes, I think it was, and he gets into the driver's side of my car."
Board said she tried to stop the man.
"I kind of try to get in front of him to stop him from taking the vehicle, but he still goes around and leaves in the vehicle," Board said.
She said it felt like a movie.
"Panicking, nervous, just disbelief and distraught that something like this was happening," Board said.
Apparently, her car had all of her personal items inside, including her credit, debit, and social security cards.
"I see that they are currently using my EBT card. They were at the local Sam's that was out south, and it looks like they were at some supermarkets here in the East Austin area, so they're all over Austin, so you might want to just be mindful," Board said.
Board and her son have a message to whoever is behind this.
"Just do the right thing and return the car because you've taken away from a mother that's trying to support her kids and have a survival for them and stable living," Board said.
"I would just like for the person to just give us our car," Board's son, Demarion Ewing said.

Amazon does provide various forms of assistance when situations arise, including filing insurance claims to help drivers and pay for missed delivery blocks.

L.A. school year begins with lookouts for ICE -- as well as normal thrills, jitters
Back-to-school preparations for the school year that began Thursday in Los Angeles were like no other — and more ominous. One teacher training explained how to recognize various federal officers who handle immigration arrests or 'kidnappings,' as participants were told — and also how to distinguish between these officers and bounty hunters wearing cop gear purchased on Amazon. 'All of the agencies are masked, and all of them refuse to identify themselves, right?' said the presenter at the headquarters of United Teachers Los Angeles, which hosted the training. 'That's what we've experienced on the ground.' The 2025 school year opens Thursday morning with many of the usual rituals: Balloons at the schoolhouse entrance, crying 5-year-olds with nearly crying parentsand teenagers who are nearly too cool for school but thrilled to see friends and even eager to meet their teachers. 'My children are interested and excited to start school and get the usual assortment of school supplies and new shoes,' said Judi Bike. But their 'favorite new school shopping is backpack shopping' for a child from a low-income family 'usually through the Baby2Baby student program,' she said. In the background, however, is deep concern about whether federal agents will use school sites to target immigrants without legal status as they walk with children on the way to or from campus. Federal authorities have said no place is off limits as they maneuver to reach President Trump's goal of 1 million deportations per year. These fears were heightened Monday when federal agents reportedly drew their guns on and handcuffed a 15-year-old boy with disabilities outside Arleta High School in a case of mistaken identity. Federal officials said they were looking to apprehend a suspected MS-13 gang member and instead nabbed the person's cousin. Family members persuaded officers that the boy was not the person they were looking for and the officers released him. A Department of Homeland security statement Wednesday praised the family for cooperating. 'The mother of the 15-year-old, who is cousins with the alleged MS-13 gang member, was on the scene and worked with Border Patrol,' the statement said. 'The mother informed Border Patrol that they are often confused for each other. She helped give Border Patrol the information to help apprehend him later in the day.' 'Once again, our agents keeping streets and the American tax-payer safe from criminals and we will keep doing so until the mission is accomplished,' said U.S. Border Patrol Sector Chief Gregory Bovino in a social media post. For school officials, however, questions remain about why such an operation unfolded outside a school. Educators throughout the Los Angeles region are expressing worries about their students and their immigrant families. 'Imagine ... leaving your home in the morning and not knowing if your parents or your tío or tía is going to be there when you get back, or your grandparents,' said Pomona Unified School District Supt. Darren Knowles. 'Kids have enough to worry about as it is. I remember walking to school as a kid, and I worried about ... the bully. I worried about the dog in the neighbor's yard and ... other fears that my mind would create.' Pomona's schools opened Tuesday, and the attendance rate was a little lower than last year's first day, Knowles said at a Wednesday event held with other local leaders to call attention to the importance of good attendance. Getting to school, the leaders noted, leads to better learning, better health and even better life success. But they didn't suggest that arriving on campus — and focusing on learning — would be easy for many worried families. 'It's very difficult to teach children when they're afraid,' said Debra Duardo, superintendent of the L.A. County Office of Education. While schools continue to be relative safe havens, educators have been forced to devise protocols about what do to when immigration agents are near a school or attempting to enter campus. 'This is something unprecedented,' Duardo said. 'The fear is real, and it is having a direct impact on student attendance and student enrollment.' The training that described the different federal agencies took place in late July. Trainings covering some of the same material have also taken place at schools. The UTLA-hosted event was conducted by educators involved with the group Unión del Barrio. That activist group has trained about a thousand local educators and community members in recent months and — although its work is centered in L.A. — its volunteer leaders have worked up and down the state and consulted across the country. Thursday's first day of school will feature three tiers of protection for students and their immigrant families. L.A. school district-organized efforts have established a watch zone around at least 100 schools thought to be at highest risk because of their large Latino populations. These include schools where older Latino students walk to school without their parents. The teachers union has organized a second tier of faculty observers — ideally at least five to seven per school — to watch for immigration enforcement activity and alert a network of participants if they find it. The teachers are to observe and report only, said Ron Gochez, a district teacher as well as a community organizer. The third tier involves groups such as Unión del Barrio that are prepared to gather community members at a scene and provide hands-on support or, if necessary, obstruct the efforts of immigration agents, even if they risk arrest by doing so, said Gochez, who is a Unión del Barrio leader. It remains to be seen if some families will opt out of in-person school. Online enrollment rose in the spring semester for L.A. Unified once the Trump administration entered office. Early this week, it was running about 7% higher than last year despite overall lower enrollment, said L.A. schools Supt. Alberto Carvalho.

Tinley Park police union votes no confidence in police chief
More than three dozen Tinley Park police officers signed a vote of no confidence citing 63 reasons why they think police Chief Thomas Tilton should be removed from his position, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Alliance of Police Tinley Park Chapter 192 union. All Tinley Park officers in the union, except officers on probation, signed the document alleging the department has experienced a decline in morale, disregard for staff concerns, a lack of strategic and overall vision, inadequate or absent decisions, operational uncertainty and reduced efficiency due to Tilton's leadership, according to union representative Ray Violetto, a retired detective. The union also said Tilton, who was hired in 2021, has contributed to the growing damage of the department's public image and internal credibility, citing this as one of the most concerning issues, according to the union statement. Violetto said part of the reason so many officers voted no confidence was due to the lack of communication from Tilton. He said Tilton canceled a meeting between the department and officers after the no-confidence vote was publicly announced and said there are no staff meetings with lower level supervisors, which can lead to lack of coordination and even understaffing for events. Violetto said at the 2023 Armed Forces Carnival, which was shut down after a flash mob of over 400 teenagers, officers were short staffed, denied bathroom and hydration breaks and ignored when they warned commanding staff about the oncoming teens. 'The officers felt they've made every effort to bring forward all these discrepancies that are occurring, which are falling on deaf ears,' Violetto said. Tinley Park Village Trustee Kenneth Shaw, during an Aug. 6 Village Board meeting, called the statement 'the second stunt' he's seen recently from the union and said Village Manager Pat Carr's statement defending Tilton 'fell on deaf ears.' Village officials released a statement shortly after the meeting declaring support for Tilton, citing his 40 years of law enforcement experience, and calling the vote 'unfounded.' Officials commended Tilton for his efforts to bring accountability to the department and progress in 'attempting to fix bad and costly practices that have been going on for decades.' When asked to expand upon these issues, Carr said the village will not comment beyond the released statement. The statement also argued village officials have been attempting to negotiate a new contract with the union for 15 months, even offering them the highest four-year pay increase in department history, according to Carr. But officials said the union's 'unwillingness to compromise' has barred progress, and both parties await dates for interest arbitration. Tinley Park officials initiated an independent audit in 2024 to address concerns about the cost of police overtime and conducted an internal review of the department's structure in 2025, citing a lack in frontline supervision, which they said contributed to a lack of cohesion within the department and hindered effective management, according to the statement. 'It is unfortunate the Union is attempting to resolve this publicly,' Carr said in the statement. 'These expressions of frustration are heard; we share in this sentiment. Negotiations always stir up emotions, but it is important to look past them to resolve the underlying issues.'' Violetto called the village's statement misleading because he said the vote of no confidence has been 'festering' in the department for much longer than the contract issues. He also said he would like to see more information on the specific accountability issues village officials cited, saying that the department already delivers a weekly report to the village trustees, among other accountability reports. Violetto called Shaw's comment 'uncalled for,' saying that neither Shaw nor any of the other trustees had read the full document explaining the no confidence vote at the time. Violetto handed them the document at the meeting, he said. The village's response left union officers 'disenchanted,' Violetto said. 'They have a very high frustration level, and they just want to be heard, and they want accountability by the people who are accountable,' Violetto said. Violetto said the union would like to sit down and discuss the issues with the village and department to move the efforts in a positive direction. Carr's statement said Tinley Park remains committed to resolving the contract issues 'in a manner that supports the dedicated men and women of the Tinley Park Police Department while restoring fiscal and operational integrity.'
