Mock drill, blackout observed in 18 districts in Gujarat; over 500 take part
Hours ahead of the mock drill, the Indian armed forces carried out an air strike, dubbed 'Operation Sindoor', on terrorist camps in Pakistan, heightening tensions between both countries.
In Ahmedabad, the mock drill was conducted in nine places — including Dhandhuka Municipality, Viramgam Tank Farm of the Salaya-Mathura Pipeline System (SMPL) of Indian Oil, Pirana Sub Station Power Grid, the industrial complex at Vatva GIDC, Gallops Industrial Park on the outskirts of the city, Ganeshpura (Koth) Temple, Torrent Power Plant at Sabarmati, Tata Plant at Sanand GIDC, and Palladium Mall in Thaltej.
According to officials involved in the mock drill, 'Operation Abhyas', at Palladium Mall, citizens were made aware about civil defence. After the air raid siren was rung, the fire department team sprayed water on the building, and the 'mock fire' was extinguished immediately. Everyone was shifted to a safe place i.e. the basement of the mall by rescue and police personnel.
People identified as 'injured' were immediately shifted to hospital.
More than 500 people participated in the mock drill, including 50 personnel and officers each from the Ahmedabad Fire Department and Ahmedabad city police department, six from the state Health Department, six from the AMC, eight from Revenue Department, 10 from Ambulance services, 20 from civil defence services, one each from RTO and GSRTC, seven from Roads and Buildings Department, and staffers from various business establishments of the mall.
In Kutch, a senior police officer said that the mock drill was conducted at vital installations, including Kandla and Mundra Ports. A statement by the Kutch collectorate said, 'Citizens were given an understanding of self-defence in case of an air strike warning, first aid and evacuation of air strike casualties, treatment of civilians injured in bomb blasts, prompt action in fire incidents and protection against chemical accidents.'
Airstrike mock drills took place at the Reliance Refinery and Sikka Thermal Power Stations in Jamnagar city.
While the mock drills were conducted after 4 pm, blackouts were carried out between 7.30 pm and 9 pm across the state in three tranches. A senior official in Ahmedabad said that blackouts windows were different for differnt parts of the state in order to lessen the load on the power grid.
Meanwhile, in an order on Wednesday evening, Gagandeep Gambhir, IG, Police Administration, issued an order, cancelling the leaves of all police officers, and asked those already on leave to return to duty.

Cong takes out march against ‘poll fraud'
Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee Monday took out a candlelight march from Bhopal Singh Stadium in Sector 45 here, as part of the party's nationwide movement to expose alleged electoral fraud and "vote chori" reportedly being orchestrated by the BJP in collusion with the Election Commission of India (ECI). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Hundreds of Congress workers carrying party flags, candles, and placards marched through the streets, raising slogans of "Vote Chor Gaddi Chhod!" This sent out a loud and clear message that the people of India will not tolerate the murder of democracy. The march was led by HS Lucky, president of the party's UT unit. Launching a scathing attack on the BJP and the ECI, Lucky said, "Rahul Gandhi's revelations ripped apart the mask of Modi's so-called democracy. The voter list manipulation, deletion of lakhs of names, and fraudulent additions expose the BJP-ECI nexus. Yesterday's press conference by the chief election commissioner showed the naked bias of the commission — the language of a BJP agent, not a constitutional authority. This is nothing short of treason against democracy. If the Election Commission chooses to act as BJP's puppet, then it loses its moral right to exist." He added, "The Election Commission is the guardian of Indian democracy. If it becomes complicit in fraud, then democracy itself collapses. Chandigarh Congress demands full accountability, complete transparency, and the immediate resignation of the Modi govt along with BJP govts in Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra that stand tainted by these shocking revelations of vote theft. The Congress party will not rest until every truth is unearthed and those guilty are punished. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now " The protest also welcomed the directions of the Supreme Court, which delivered a stinging setback to the Election Commission in the case of Bihar's voter rolls. The court ordered the publication of provisional draft rolls, restoration of the names of 65 lakh deleted voters, and directed the EC to provide reasons for deletion. It also ruled that Aadhaar cards must be accepted for voter inclusion — a decision hailed by Sandeep Gujjar as "a victory of the people over a compromised Commission. " The Chandigarh Congress asserted that this march is only the beginning of a larger battle to save the Constitution and the soul of Indian democracy. The party vowed to intensify its fight across the country until the electoral system is purged of corruption and restored to its rightful credibility.

Jaishankar Calls for ‘Candid and Constructive' India-China Ties During Wang Yi Visit
While Jaishankar or the MEA did not mention the topic, Beijing stated that the Indian side had conveyed that 'Taiwan is part of China'. New Delhi: External affairs minister S. Jaishankar on Monday (August 18) told visiting Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi that India and China must adopt a 'candid and constructive' approach to move forward in their relations after a 'difficult period'. Wang, a member of the Communist Party of China's Politburo, arrived in New Delhi on Monday evening and immediately met Jaishankar. While Jaishankar's opening remarks and his post-meeting social media updates did not mention the topic, the Chinese foreign ministry's readout stated that the Indian side had conveyed that 'Taiwan is part of China'. If confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs, this would mark the first official reaffirmation of India's one-China policy in more than 15 years. Wang's visit is primarily to co-chair the Special Representative-level talks on the boundary issue with national security adviser Ajit Doval on Tuesday. He is also expected to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is scheduled to travel to China later this month. This was the second meeting between Jaishankar and Wang within a month. In July, the Indian minister had visited China for the Shanghai Cooperation Summit's foreign ministers' gathering, where the two held delegation-level talks on the sidelines. The increased frequency of interactions between the two Asian powers follows the thaw in ties after the resolution of the military standoff in October 2024, which paved the way for the meeting between Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan. 'Having seen a difficult period in our relationship,' Jaishankar said at the start of the meeting, 'our two nations now seek to move ahead. This requires a candid and constructive approach from both sides'. 'In that endeavour, we must be guided by the three mutuals - mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest. Differences must not become disputes, nor competition conflict,' he stated. Noting that India seeks multipolarity both globally and in Asia, Jaishankar said: 'In the current environment, there is clearly the imperative of maintaining and enhancing stability in the global economy as well'. He also stated that the 'fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is another major priority'. According to the Chinese foreign ministry's press release, Wang said the world is witnessing a rise in 'unilateral bullying practices' and that 'free trade and the international order [are] facing grave challenges'. Wang also highlighted the need for long-term strategic cooperation. 'Both sides should draw lessons from the experience of the past 75 years, establish the right strategic perception, regard each other as partners and opportunities rather than rivals or threats, devote their valuable resources to development and revitalisation, and explore the correct way for neighbouring major countries to respect and trust each other, live in peace, pursue development together and achieve win-win cooperation,' he said. He added: 'China and India should strengthen confidence, move towards each other, overcome disturbances, expand cooperation and consolidate the momentum of improvement in bilateral relations, so that the rejuvenation processes of the two great Eastern civilisations can reinforce and complement one another, providing the certainty and stability most needed for Asia and the world.' After the meeting, Jaishankar described the discussions as fruitful, noting they had 'productive conversations on our economic and trade issues, pilgrimages, people-to-people contacts, river data sharing, border trade, connectivity and bilateral exchanges.' Opposition stages walkout from Rajya Sabha over Bihar's SIR issue
New Delhi, Aug 18 (UNI) The Opposition staged a walkout from the Rajya Sabha today, boycotting the proceedings over their demand for a debate on the ongoing revision of the electoral rolls in Bihar. The government criticized the Opposition, calling their move as 'irresponsible' as 69 hours of time have already been wasted in this session due to such disruptions. The House proceedings had resumed at 2 pm after being adjourned during Zero Hour amid the uproar. But Opposition members refused to give in, as they stood up from their seats and created a noisy disturbance in the House. Dr Sasmit Patra, who was in the chair, briefly introduced the objectives of the Indian Ports Bill, 2025, which was presented by Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal. The Bill was introduced amid the chaos. The chair called upon AIADMK member Thiruchi Siva to present his amendment to the bill, but he began referring to the SSR instead. The Chair did not allow this. At the same time, Opposition members raised a point of order. Dr Patra allowed opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge to speak on behalf of the opposition, but when he attempted to say something about the Election Commission, ruling party members objected strongly. The chair ruled that no comments unrelated to the subject under discussion would be recorded. Leader of the House Jagat Prakash Nadda criticized the Opposition attitude, calling it irresponsible and a waste of the House's time. Meanwhile, Congress and other opposition members walked out of the House. The Union Minister said at the start of the session, on July 21, the government had expressed willingness to discuss the topic according to the rules. The Chair has repeatedly ruled that the subject raised by the opposition cannot be discussed under the rules. He said, 'Despite this, the opposition's disruptions have wasted 69 hours of the House's time so far. The opposition's behavior is irresponsible. They have no interest in discussion; they believe in chaos. I condemn their behaviour.' Nadda further said, 'We have arranged discussions on every topic as per the rules. We had a discussion on Operation Sindoor, in which they were defeated. They have started opposing the country while opposing the party.' Before the proceedings began, Dr Patra calmed the members and informed them that the Business Advisory Committee had allocated three hours and one hour respectively for the discussion and passage of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) Amendment Bill. Both the bills were passed by the Lok Sabha and have been referred to Rajya Sabha for consideration. UNI AJ PRS
