Hong Kong's bourse operator has appointed Zhang Yong, the former chairman and chief executive of Alibaba Group, to its mainland China advisory group, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing said on Friday.
Zhang joined Firstred Capital as managing partner in March last year to work with founder Liu Xiaodan to "explore a new future for merger and acquisition funds," according to a post from the firm on its official WeChat account.
Prior to that, he worked at Alibaba for 16 years, rising to the CEO and chairman positions before announcing in June 2023 he would step down from those roles to focus on the company's cloud business.
However, in September 2023, he quit that role as well in a surprise move.
"With the addition of Mr Zhang Yong, the advisory group now comprises nine members and is chaired by Zhang Yichen, HKEX non-executive director and chairman and chief executive officer of Citic Capital Holdings," HKEX said in its statement. (Reuters)

Alibaba tops Meituan's China on-demand delivery, fuelled by 1 million cups of tea daily

Orders on Alibaba's instant commerce channel Taobao Shangou topped 100 million on Thursday, 20 million fewer than Meituan. After Meituan stopped its promotion on Friday and Saturday, Taobao's orders overtook Meituan's, LatePost said on Tuesday without citing the source of its information. Alibaba, which owns the South China Morning Post, did not respond to requests for comment. Meituan did not respond either. The data showed that subsidies worked in China's ultra-competitive market. The industry was shifting from Meituan's 'near-monopoly to near-duopoly' with Alibaba's emergence, as the challenger lavished generous subsidies on customers, delivery riders and merchants to gain market share, Morgan Stanley said. The two companies are likely to have equal shares of China's on-demand delivery market by 2030, the bank said. Delivery riders on the streets of Shanghai on November 29, 2023. Hong Kong stocks trade sideways as investors focus on economic data, earnings

Hong Kong stocks traded in a narrow range on Tuesday, as traders looked past the US tariff pause extension to focus on economic data and earnings. Advertisement The Hang Seng Index fell 0.1 per cent to 24,891.37 as of 10.09am local time. The Hang Seng Tech Index dropped 0.4 per cent. On the mainland, the CSI 300 Index and the Shanghai Composite Index gained at least 0.3 per cent. Kuaishou Technology dropped 2.5 per cent to HK$76.75 and Alibaba Group Holding fell 1.4 per cent to HK$116.90. Tencent Holdings retreated 0.3 per cent to HK$559.50 before its interim report on Wednesday. Market sentiment will be tested, as some of the Hang Seng Index constituents release earnings this week. China's statistics bureau will disclose the July economic data on Friday, offering fresh clues on how the world's second-largest economy fared after first-half growth topped estimates. Investors took the tariff-extension news in their stride, as the outcome was in line with expectations. US President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order extending the tariff truce with China by 90 days until November 10, while China also made a similar statement.
