Welsh rugby's Judgement Day shelved for a season

BBC News21-05-2025

Welsh rugby's Judgement Day event will not take place next season as the United Rugby Championship (URC) fixtures were released for the 2025-26 campaign.Judgement Day is a Welsh derby annual double-header involving all four professional sides held at the same date at the same venue, normally the Principality Stadium. The Professional Rugby Board (PRB), which consists of representatives from the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) and four regions and runs the professional game in Wales, confirmed the event will take a 'hiatus' next year.A PRB statement says the event will be paused in 2026 so it can be "re-imagined" because it still has "huge potential".
The Judgement Day concept started in 2013 with more than 68,000 turning up at the Principality Stadium in 2016 but the event's popularity has waned in recent years. The 10th edition of the event in its current guise was staged at the Principality Stadium this April and attracted a crowd of 28,328.This was the lowest attendance of the nine Principality Stadium occasions, although the crowd figure was 8,000 fewer when the event was switched to Cardiff City Stadium in 2024.Ospreys head coach Mark Jones and Scarlets captain Josh Macleod say they hoped the event could have a future if the crowds could be coaxed back. "We will rethink the product we are offering and bring back an event to showcase Welsh professional rugby in the future," said a PRB spokesperson."The concept has huge potential and its early incarnations were a proven success, but we think it is time to re-imagine it."Instead, this season will see Welsh rugby concentrate on attracting maximum crowds for the respective derby days and other showcase fixtures at our home venues."In contrast, more than 50,000 attended the Bath versus Bristol league game for an historic English league game staged at the home of Welsh rugby in May. Bath and Bristol will return to the Principality Stadium next season for what they bill as the 'Big Day Out.'
Ospreys start in South Africa
The new URC season will begin on the final weekend in September when Dragons will travel to face Ulster on Friday, 26 September, while Cardiff host Lions and Scarlets entertain Munster the following day.Ospreys will open their season by making the 5,600-mile flight to South Africa with two games against Bulls and Stormers, having also just finished the 2024-25 campaign there.Ospreys are hoping to move to their new St Helen's ground by December and only have two home games in their first six matches with the venue of these games yet to be established. The format of the competition remains unchanged, with the top eight teams progressing to the play-offs beginning 29 May.The semi-finals will be played on 6 June, followed by the Grand Final on 20 June. The fixtures have been released in the same week the latest off-the-field crisis has hit Welsh rugby.A dispute has emerged between the WRU and Ospreys and Scarlets who are at loggerheads following the governing body's decision to implement an unequal funding system for the four professional sides. The WRU made the announcement it was reverting to a two-tier funding model amid reports it intends to cut a professional team, although it has neither confirmed nor denied if reducing the amount of sides from four to three is part of its plans. The WRU is currently contractually obliged to provide four sides in the URC and will face financial penalties if that commitment is not fulfilled.

URC semi-final: Build-up as Leinster host defending champions Glasgow

Update: Date: 14:40 BST Title: Smith confident Glasgow peaking at right time for semi-final Content: Leinster v Glasgow Warriors (14:45 BST) Glasgow Warriors head coach Franco Smith believes his side have put their recent heavy European defeat against Leinster behind them as they return to Dublin to face the favourites in the URC semi-finals on Saturday. Warriors were whitewashed 52-0 in their Champions Cup quarter-final but Smith has consigned that to history and says his side are peaking at the right time, as planned, despite being underdogs. "I think that's something of the past," he said. "Different competition. We've learned from it and we've moved on. "We've planned from the first day of pre-season how we want to look and how you want to shape up in the final [games]. "We've handled the season well. We've managed to get some of our players back from injury and we allowed them back into the environment at the right time and hopefully we're in a good place, now that we're going to the semi." Smith knows his reigning champions face a stiff test to reach back-to-back finals, citing the players' mindset as key. "It's everything and I think every game is about the mindset," he said. "The difficulty is to maintain that for 39 weeks in the year. The mindset and approach and attitude in a final game is obviously the main ingredient. "We've got to be on top of our game. They've got a world-class team, they've proven it in the Test match arena, they've proven it in this competition. It's a class outfit. "It's going to be a tough challenge. The only way we're going to get better and keep on growing and progressing is if we challenge ourselves to be the best version of ourselves." Update: Date: 14:36 BST Title: Fatigue not an issue for Leinster - Nienaber Content: Leinster v Glasgow Warriors (14:45 BST) For much of the Leinster squad, the past month has stirred a broad spectrum of emotions. There was the agony of an Investec Champions Cup semi-final loss at home to Northampton, denying the province a shot at redemption after a hat-trick of final defeats in the previous three seasons. Just a few days later, the bulk of the squad were confronted with the whirlwind that is British and Irish Lions squad announcement day. For most of them, it was good news, but for those who missed out it was another bitter pill so soon after their Champions Cup demise. Jacques Nienaber - under whom the team's defence has thrived - does not sense depleted levels of energy or focus within the group. "No, not at all," said the 52-year-old South African. "We're cracking on. It's a privilege for any team to be involved in the knock-out stages. "It's a privilege for us definitely to be testing ourselves against Glasgow this weekend, the reigning champions, who obviously understand how to play knock-out games if you look at what they did last year. It's a privilege to test ourselves against a quality side like that." Update: Date: 14:32 BST Title: Can Glasgow take advantage of Leinster's 'performance anxiety'? Content: Leinster v Glasgow Warriors (14:45 BST) Former European Cup winner with Leinster Bernard Jackman spoke on BBC's Scotland Rugby Podcast this week and hinted that there is a bit of 'performance anxiety' for the boys in blue. You can read the best bits of Jackman's comments here Update: Date: 14:29 BST Title: Glasgow look to bust Aviva curse Content: Leinster v Glasgow Warriors (14:45) Andy BurkeBBC Sport Scotland at Aviva Stadium, Dublin If Glasgow are to advance to a second successive URC final they'll have to do something no Scottish side - club or international - has ever done - win at the Aviva Stadium. This place has been a graveyard for Scottish sides down the years, not least when Leinster crushed Warriors 52-0 here in the Champions Cup quarter-final eight weeks ago. A shadow Glasgow side put up a much sterner test when going down 13-5 in the URC three weeks ago, and after a stirring showing in dispatching the Stormers in the quarter-finals last week, there's a sense that Warriors are starting to put it together at the right time once again. Leinster on the other hand are having a bit of a wobble after their shock Champions Cup semi-final defeat to Northampton, and while they undoubtedly remain strong favourites, this match is not the mismatch it may have looked a few short weeks ago. Update: Date: 14:25 BST Title: Team News Content: Leinster v Glasgow Warriors (14:45 BST) Ireland full-back Hugo Keenan will miss today's game in what is a blow to Leo Cullen's men. Keenan, who was named in the British and Irish Lions squad last month, is not included in Leo Cullen's matchday squad for the Aviva Stadium contest with the holders after picking up a calf injury. The 28-year-old, who produced a player-of-the-match display in last week's quarter-final win over Scarlets, is replaced by Jimmy O'Brien in the 15 shirt. With Jimmy O'Brien switching to full-back, Tommy O'Brien replaces his him on the right wing after missing the Scarlets game through injury. Dan Sheehan returns at hooker, with Ronan Kelleher dropping to the bench, while Scott Penny replaces the injured Josh van der Flier at open-side flanker. In addition to Van der Flier, Garry Ringrose and Tadhg Furlong are also unavailable. Glasgow make two changes from their quarter-final win over the Stormers, with Fin Richardson replacing Murphy Walker at tight-head prop. Adam Hastings starts at fly-half with Tom Jordan moving to inside centre and Stafford McDowall dropping to the bench. Glasgow are without Huw Jones, Matt Fagerson, Jack Dempsey and Zander Fagerson. Leinster: Jimmy O'Brien; Tommy O'Brien, Jamie Osborne, Jordie Barrett, James Lowe; Sam Prendergast, Jamison Gibson-Park; Andrew Porter, Dan Sheehan, Thomas Clarkson, Joe McCarthy, James Ryan, Ryan Baird, Scott Penny, Jack Conan (capt) Replacements: Ronan Kelleher, Jack Boyle, Rabah Slimani, RG Snyman, Max Deegan, Luke McGrath, Ross Byrne, Ciaran Frawley Glasgow: Josh McKay; Kyle Steyn (capt), Sione Tuipulotu, Tom Jordan, Kyle Rowe; Adam Hastings, George Horne; Jamie Bhatti, George Hiddleston, Fin Richardson, Alex Samuel, Scott Cummings, Euan Ferrie, Rory Darge, Henco Venter Replacements: Johnny Matthews, Rory Sutherland, Sam Talakai, Max Williamson, Jack Mann, Macenzzie Duncan, Stafford McDowall, Jamie Dobie Referee: Andrea Piardi (Italy) Update: Date: 14:16 BST Title: Welcome to the Aviva Stadium Content: Leinster v Glasgow Warriors (14:45 BST) Hello and welcome to our coverage of the first United Rugby Championship semi-final of the day as Leinster host Glasgow Warriors. Franco Smith's men have already been put to the sword twice here in as many months but the defending champions arrive in Dublin full of confidence after their 36-18 quarter-final victory over the Stormers. Leinster, meanwhile, will be hoping it is second time lucky in a semi-final here after their shock defeat to Northampton in the Champions Cup last four just 35 days ago. They are back at the Aviva today a week after defeating the Scarlets 33-21 on the same ground. Can Leo Cullen's men make their first final since winning in 2021 or will the Warriors win in the Irish capital for the first time in six years and earn a spot in a second consecutive final in South Africa? It is sure to be a thriller. Thank you for joining us.

Raft of Welsh rugby free agents emerge as players search for new clubs

Raft of Welsh rugby free agents emerge as players search for new clubs While many of Welsh rugby's departures have their next club lined up, some are still searching Regan Grace runs out for Wales against the Queensland Reds last summer (Image: Chris Fairweather/Huw Evans Agency ) In more serene seasons in Welsh rugby, teams tend to prefer to get their leavers lists out before their final match of the campaign so fans can provide a suitable farewell for those departing. Unfortunately, these aren't serene times in Welsh rugby and almost all of the lists came after the conclusion of the season. Quite a number of players named on those lists already have clubs lined up for next year, with a host of deals having been announced. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. ‌ However, there are still some for whom a move has yet to be announced. ‌ You'd imagine that, behind the scenes, work is currently ongoing to get these players a contract ahead of next season. But who are the players currently looking for new pastures? Starting in the capital, hooker Efan Daniel is one of the players released by Cardiff without a new club officially announced - although a move to the Ospreys is expected. Article continues below There's no news on where back-row Gwilym Bradley will end up, while wing Regan Grace - who toured Australia with Wales last summer - could feasibly have his pick of the two codes. Back in April, the former St Helens wing admitted there was interest from rugby league clubs, but added he still had a desire to "crack" rugby union. Unsurprisingly, given the rebuild needed after a nightmarish season, there was quite a high turnover of players at the Dragons. Quite a number of them haven't had deals for next season announced, either. ‌ Props Dmitri Arhip and Josh Reynolds have both been released, as has fellow front-row Paula Latu - who had joined on a short-term deal in December. Second-row Joe Davies, after over a decade at Rodney Parade and 137 appearances for the Men of Gwent, is also on the lookout for a new club, as is back-row George Young. Fly-half Lloyd Evans is also searching for a new club, having joined from Gloucester last summer. ‌ Lloyd Evans of Dragons RFC kicks for goal (Image: Huw Evans Picture Agency ) Centre Harry Wilson is heading back to Australia, while wing Ashton Hewitt and Jordan Williams have also left - with the former having been linked to Worcester. Former Wales centre Scott Williams, having made a few appearances for the Dragons, wasn't offered a deal by Filo Tiatia - meaning the 34-year-old is available. ‌ The Ospreys' leavers list all have their next move lined up. Adam Beard is heading overseas - with his next club expected to be Montpellier - while Owen Williams will join Nice, Tristan Davies is heading to the Scarlets and Justin Tipuric is hanging up his boots to join the coaching team. As for the Scarlets, there's a few players still without a deal in place. Hooker Shaun Evans, lock Morgan Jones and scrum-half Efan Jones have all yet to reveal where they'll be playing next year. Article continues below The Scarlets also announced the departure of Wales wing Steff Evans, who leaves Parc y Scarlets as the joint-highest Welsh try-scorer in the United Rugby Championship. It's expected that he'll move into Super Rygbi Cymru for next season.

Swans aim to avoid another Darling situation

Director of football Richard Montague says Swansea City will attempt to avoid another Harry Darling situation in the future by ensuring the club's key players do not run down their Darling is attracting interest from a host of Championship clubs this summer, partly because he is available on a free tried to persuade Darling to sign a new deal – and their offer remains on the table – but former boss Luke Williams suggested the club should have made an earlier attempt to tie the former MK Dons player is not the first Swansea player in recent seasons to see his contract come to an end – and Montague accepts the club must look to avoid similar scenarios in the future."We want to keep our best players and we don't want to get in the situation where those players can do what Harry has been able to do, which is brilliant for Harry but less good for us as a club," he said. "We want to avoid that as much as possible. That is going to be a key focus going forward, either deciding on when is the right time to cash in on an asset and when is the right time to extend someone's contract, either to grow with us or become an even stronger asset for us."I can understand why situations develop but we have to do our best to try to avoid them."Josh Tymon and Josh Key were two of Swansea's star performers in 2024-25 and are among the club's most saleable two full-backs see their current deals expire next summer, although there club have the option of extending both those contracts by a further 12 asked whether Tymon and Key's contract situations should be addressed sooner rather than later, Montague added: "We will absolutely be talking to those guys as the season begins, in pre-season as well, but we haven't had any conversations yet."
