Nelly Korda in search of first win of season at Evian Championship
Since it became the fifth major of women's golf in 2013, the Evian Championship has crowned a litany of highly ranked champions. It's not a tournament where surprises tend to happen.
This week, the likes of Nelly Korda and Jeeno Thitikul will try to add their own chapters to this brief history as the championship begins Thursday at Evian Resort in Evian-les-Bains, France.
World No. 1 Korda is still searching for her first win of 2025 after collecting seven titles in 2024. Thailand's Thitikul, ranked No. 2 in the world, has yet to win a major and is coming off a frustrating Women's PGA Championship, where she led each of the first two rounds before fading to a tie for fourth.
Still, Thitikul is only 22 years old and will have more opportunities. The 26-year-old Korda joked this week that she doesn't recognize half the players on tour this year.
'I feel like a grandma out here,' Korda said. 'But, yeah, that's the best thing about sports in general, is that you can never stay comfortable where you are because there is a new generation, new talent coming, and they're going to be better and have more knowledge.'
It's not strictly a young woman's game. Australia's Minjee Lee -- who at 29 qualifies as a tour veteran -- broke a 20-month title drought when she charged past Thitikul on the weekend to win the Women's PGA, her third career major.
'I feel like there is so many that are so young now and that are so good,' Lee said. 'They're always pushing me and pushing all of us older girls. ... Obviously like I get motivation from that, but I think I'm much more self-motivated at the moment.'
Lee won her first major at the Evian in 2021. Other big names on the list of Evian winners include Canadian Brooke Henderson (2022), South Koreans Jin-Young Ko (2019) and In Gee Chun (2016) and New Zealand's Lydia Ko (2015).
Celine Boutier became the event's first French winner in 2023, when she ran away with a six-stroke win.
'I think every time European swing comes around, I'm very excited just coming back home, seeing my family and some friends and just feeling the energy, the atmosphere, it gives me a little boost and hopefully good energy,' Boutier said. 'If I can get going those weeks, I know I get some kind of momentum for the rest of the season.'
Japan's Ayaka Furue, just 24 at the time, pulled out a one-shot win last year. And women even younger than that are making themselves known in the game.
Lottie Woad, a 21-year-old from England, is No. 1 in the world amateur rankings and dominated a field of Ladies European Tour pros to win the Women's Irish Open by six shots last week.
'I'm just trying to carry on the momentum,' Woad said. 'If that means I can be in contention, that would be great. Just really just trying to look to play good golf and continue what I was doing last week.'
Evian Resort is a par-71, 6,504-yard course that overlooks Lake Geneva. Though perhaps overshadowed by the other majors in women's golf, it is known for its stunning views.
'Hitting bad shots out here is not as bad as hitting it somewhere else,' Korda said.

Diamondbacks DFA veteran reliever Kendall Graveman

Graveman, 34, signed with Arizona in spring training after missing all of the 2024 campaign, recovering from right shoulder labrum surgery. He started the season on the injured list (strained right lumbar), debuted with the team on May 13 and also missed time in June due to a hip injury. Graveman made 19 appearances with the Diamondbacks, winning his lone decision, but pitching to an ERA of 7.13 in 17 2/3 innings of work. He did not allow an earned run in six consecutive appearances (July 13-Aug. 3), but permitted two runs, while recording one out vs. San Diego on August 5 and gave up three runs in one inning on August 10 vs. Colorado. 'Kendall was grinding through things,' Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. 'He was having some really good moments, some touch-and-go moments outside of that and we just felt like it was the right time to make a move to get Juan back up here.' Graveman debuted with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2014, then spent four seasons in Oakland (2015-18), before spending time with the Seattle Mariners (2020-21), Houston Astros (2021, 2023) and the Chicago White Sox (2022-23). He was a member of two Astros' division-winning squads and appeared in nine games in the 2021 playoffs. The right-hander was 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA in 11 innings of work for the squad which fell to Tampa Bay in the American League Championship Series. Graveman, who intends to keep pitching, signed for $1.35 million with a $5 million mutual option in 2026. He is 36-43 with a 4.03 ERA in 299 career appearances (80 starts). Morillo, 26, posted an 0-2 record and a 4.94 ERA in 31 outings for the Diamondbacks earlier this season. He was recalled from Triple-A Reno.

Cincinnati Open interrupted by power outage

Photos from reporters on the scene captured smoke ostensibly coming from on-site generators at Lindner Family Tennis Center. Though there was daylight when the outage occurred, electronic line calling and the TV feed both went offline without power, forcing the delay. Two men's matches were in progress when the outage took place. Greek 25th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas led Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi 7-6 (4), 2-5, and fourth seed Taylor Fritz had just won his first set against Italian 31st seed Lorenzo Sonego 7-6 (4). Fritz and Sonego began warming up just after 6:30 p.m. ET and their match resumed just minutes later. Before the postponement, Frances Tiafoe was among the players who took care of business as the 10th seed defeated No. 20 seed Ugo Humbert of France 6-4, 6-4. Seeking his first ATP Masters 1000 title, Tiafoe pleased the home crowd by hitting eight aces among his 22 overall winners. Although Humbert saved 9 of 12 break points to make his opponent work for the win, Tiafoe's first serve was too much for him (31 of 41 first-service points, 75.6 percent). Third-round play suspended for an hour at the Cincinnati Open due to power outage
CINCINNATI (AP) — Third-round play was suspended at the Cincinnati Open for a little more than an hour on Monday due to a power outage. The delay came at 5:25 p.m. after Taylor Fritz won the opening set on center court 7-6(4) against Lorenzo Sonego. Stefanos Tsitsipas led Benjamin Bonzi 7-6(4), 2-5 on Court 3.
