Benvenuti a Saizeriya! Popular Japanese Italian food chain to open in Malaysia
The firm made an announcement confirming the branch, wholly-owned, online.
While neighbouring Singapore has had a Saizeriya store since 2008, this will be the first one here though no details of the store has been mentioned besides an announcement.
The chain has over 1,600 outlets worldwide, with branches in Taiwan, Japan and China besides Singapore.
Known for its low-priced takes on Italian fare such as pastas and pizzas, Saizeria, often nicknamed 'Saize' for short first opened in 1967 in Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture.
Its founder Yasuhiko Shogaki's aim was to offer authentic Italian flavours at an attractive, affordable price point.
Will Saizeriya manage to meet those goals in Malaysia? We'll have to wait and see.

ISKANDAR PUTERI, Aug 21 — Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has reportedly slammed critics of Johor's development as fearmongers, by claiming that the state is unable to provide sufficient water and electricity supply for companies. He said such claims were slanderous and malicious, aimed at undermining the state government's efforts to attract international investment, particularly in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). 'We have also set up a special committee involving three state executive councillors with portfolios in Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources; Infrastructure and Transport; as well as Housing and Local Government. 'So, when a company wants to set up a data centre in Johor, we will assess it first, and if there is insufficient electricity and water supply, we will not approve their application,' Berita Harian quoted him saying. He said the initiatives undertaken by the state government were comprehensive, carried out in collaboration with Putrajaya to provide the best possible facilities for investors. Expanding further, Onn Hafiz said the state government has also introduced various initiatives, including tapping into alternative water supply in collaboration with Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Sdn Bhd to ensure sufficient resources. He said the state government also has a long-term plan with the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation to ensure water supply remains sufficient until 2030. 'Johor is very serious about bringing in investment, and we will ensure that investors who choose Johor will feel secure with adequate water and electricity supply. 'As for those seeking to fish in troubled waters, I hope they will stop, because what we want to build is not only Johor's economy but also one that benefits the nation,' he said. Earlier this week, State Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communication Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said Johor is the only state with a technical committee dedicated to evaluating and approving data centre projects, particularly their impact on water resources. He said the move ensures data centre planning is carried out comprehensively, including water efficiency and environmental sustainability. The committee, which he chairs, also advises developers to adopt modern cooling systems and new water-saving technologies. The rapid growth of data centre projects in Johor has raised concerns that the state could face a treated water crisis by 2030, with BIMB Research predicting demand will rise 18-fold from 20 million litres per day (mld) to 368 mld.

Ringgit opens higher against major, regional currencies
KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit opened higher on Thursday as the US dollar weakened following the release of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes, an analyst said. The local currency also strengthened against other major and regional units. At 8am, the ringgit rose to 4.2190/4.2335 from Wednesday's close of 4.2250/4.2290. Under 2025 chairmanship, Malaysia aims to accelerate Asean integration, trade and green growth
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — Malaysia views Asean as a region with vast untapped potential and is poised to become a dynamic engine of growth and resilience amid global uncertainties, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti). Miti Deputy Secretary General (Trade) Mastura Ahmad Mustafa said Asean is more than just a large market, it is a reservoir of innovation, creativity and energy with a population nearing 700 million, almost one third of whom are youth. 'Our demographic dividend, coupled with a rapidly growing consumer class, rising connectivity and accelerating digital adoption, gives Asean a unique advantage. 'If nurtured in accordance with the principles of sustainability and inclusivity, these strengths will not only fortify our region's growth but also position Asean to play a defining role in shaping the future of the global economy,' she said in her speech at the welcome dinner for the Senior Economic Officials' Meeting (SEOM) 3/56 and Related Meetings today. Under the Asean chairmanship, Mastura said Malaysia is working to deepen regional integration, strengthen supply chain resilience, foster sustainable and responsible investment and advance digital innovation. 'More importantly, we are committed to creating opportunities for businesses of all sizes, especially micro, small and medium enterprises to participate meaningfully in Asean's growth story,' she added. In a separate statement, Miti said key discussions at SEOM 3/56 focused on Malaysia's Priority Economic Deliverables under its 2025 Asean chairmanship; updates on the 2025 Annual Priorities under the AEM/SEOM purview; implementation of Asean agreements; advancement of the Digital Economy Framework Agreement; and Asean's sustainability agenda, including carbon neutrality, circular economy, and the Asean Power Grid. Miti is hosting the SEOM 3/56 and Related Meetings from Aug 18 to 23 in Kuala Lumpur.
