This includes the elderly, immunocompromised individuals, and people with chronic conditions. Emphasis on precautions, testing and early care for high-risk groups They have also underscored the continued importance of following Covid-appropriate behaviour, such as wearing masks, maintaining hand hygiene, and avoiding crowded places. Amid rising infection numbers, the central government has issued advisories to states and union territories, urging heightened vigilance and preparedness. Healthcare professionals have also stressed the need to differentiate between Covid-19 and other seasonal viral infections, which often present with overlapping symptoms like fever, fatigue, and respiratory issues. Vulnerable individuals—especially senior citizens and those with underlying medical issues—have been advised to exercise caution and seek immediate medical care if symptoms develop or worsen. The Indian Medical Association has reiterated the need for preventive measures, including the use of masks and adherence to hygiene practices, to curb the spread of the virus.

India's Covid tally surge to 7,131 cases; one death in past 24 hrs
New Delhi, June 13 (UNI) India's active virus case load has risen to 7,131 as of 8 am on Friday, according to the latest data released by the Union Health Ministry. One death was registered during the period, bringing the cumulative death toll to 78 since the beginning of the year. The recent uptick in cases is attributed to emerging sub-variants of the Omicron lineage, including JN.1, NB.1.8.1, LF.7, and XFC. These variants are characterized by increased transmissibility but tend to cause milder clinical symptoms. Currently classified by the World Health Organization as 'Variants Under Monitoring,' health experts emphasise that ongoing surveillance and adherence to preventive measures are vital to curbing potential escalation. Kerala continues to be the most affected state, with 2,055 active cases. West Bengal follows with 747 cases, Delhi has reported 714 cases, and Maharashtra has 629 active infections. Gujarat has also experienced a notable rise, reporting 1,358 active cases. Since West Bengal has yet to share its latest infection data, the actual case count may be higher. Since the start of 2025, India has recorded a total of 78 Covid-19 related deaths. The most recent casualty involved an 82-year-old man from Kerala with co-morbidities including Type 1 respiratory failure and Covid pneumonia. While the virus no longer poses an emergency-level threat, health authorities caution that Covid-19 continues to circulate seasonally, similar to influenza. Recoveries have reached approximately 10,976 since early 2025, indicating ongoing resilience against severe disease. States such as Karnataka (395 active cases), Tamil Nadu (220), and Uttar Pradesh (251) are also witnessing moderate case loads. Health authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious, especially the elderly and immune-compromised, while reiterating the importance of hygiene, masking in crowded places, and timely testing. US restores some medical research grants, says top Trump official
- A senior US health official on 10 June 2025 admitted President Donald Trump's administration had gone too far in slashing biomedical research grants worth billions of dollars, and said efforts were underway to restore some of the funding. Jay Bhattacharya, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), made the remarks during a Senate committee hearing examining both recent cuts to his agency and deeper reductions proposed by the White House in next year's budget. Bhattachartya said he had created an appeals process for scientists and laboratories whose research was impacted, and that the NIH had already "reversed many" of the cuts. "I didn't take this job to terminate grants," said the physician and health economist who left a professorship at Stanford University to join the Trump administration. "I took this job to make sure that we do the research that advances the health needs of the American people." The hearing came a day after more than 60 NIH employees sent an open letter to Bhattacharya condemning policies they said undermined the agency's mission and the health of Americans. They dubbed it the "Bethesda Declaration" -- a nod both to the NIH's suburban Washington headquarters and to Bhattacharya's role as a prominent signatory of the 2020 "Great Barrington Declaration," which opposed Covid lockdowns. Since Trump's January 20 inauguration, the NIH has terminated 2,100 research grants totaling around $9.5 billion and $2.6 billion in contracts, according to an independent database called Grant Watch. Affected projects include studies on gender, the health effects of global warming, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer. Trump has launched a sweeping overhaul of the US scientific establishment early in his second term -- cutting billions in funding, attacking universities, and overseeing mass layoffs of scientists across federal agencies.
