Commemoration coincides with 16 th anniversary of founding of renewable energy agency.
Session invites attendees to refine, evaluate, chart next steps to strengthen Renewables Talk, Women in Diplomacy initiatives.
Dubai, UAE – January 2025: The UAE, in collaboration with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), today hosted a special session of the Women in Diplomacy and Renewables Talk initiatives. Celebrating the International Day of Clean Energy, this year's event coincided with the 16th anniversary of the foundation of IRENA and reiterated the global commitment to providing universal clean energy access and meeting the climate goals pledged during the UAE Consensus at the culmination of COP28.
Hosted at the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) Sustainability and Innovation Centre, the initiatives focus on driving gender equity in diplomacy and energy leadership while fostering innovative and inclusive dialogue to address the global energy transition. In a bid to strengthen its impact, this event welcomed Permanent Representatives to IRENA, diplomats, and energy leaders to reflect on the progress of these programmes, share best practices, and refine their roadmap for the future.
Participants also contributed to identifying key themes and structures for future sessions and discussed ways to increase momentum for the gender equity and energy transition dialogues ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil.
In her opening remarks, H.E. Dr. Amna bint Abdulla Al Dahak, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment stated 'On International Day of Clean Energy, and as we mark IRENA's 16th anniversary, the UAE reaffirms its commitment to a just and inclusive clean energy transition. This collaborative session on the subject of Women in Diplomacy and Renewables underscores the importance of gender equity and inclusion in driving sustainable development. By empowering women and ensuring their participation, we unlock the full potential of the global energy sector. We are proud to host this important dialogue and to work alongside IRENA and other nations to accelerate the global shift towards clean energy.'
IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera said: 'I thank the United Arab Emirates for their steadfast partnership in accelerating the global energy transition as we celebrate this year's International Day of Clean Energy. This day not only marks the anniversary of IRENA's founding on 26 January 2009, but it also serves as a clear reminder of the potential of renewables to address climate change, foster sustainable development, reduce pollution, and shape a clean energy future for all. Despite record growth in renewables, the global distribution of renewable power remains alarmingly uneven, with the Global South increasingly being left behind. Urgent global action is needed to address the structural and systemic barriers hindering progress, including gaps in critical infrastructure, regulatory frameworks, technical capacity, and the need for significantly increased investment.'

Dr. Nawal Al-Hosany, Permanent Representative of the UAE to IRENA, added, 'The UAE's enduring partnership with IRENA reflects our shared commitment to fostering vital conversations that drive real change. By championing gender equity and energy leadership, we're not just expanding representation – we're unleashing diverse perspectives and innovative solutions to tackle our world's most existential climate and energy challenges.'
The session concluded with a guided tour of the DEWA Sustainability and Innovation Centre, where delegates explored cutting-edge technologies in renewable energy and energy efficiency showcased at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the world's largest single-site solar park developed under the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model.
Co-facilitated by the UAE and Panama, The International Day of Clean Energy was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2023 as a call to action to raise awareness and mobilize a just and inclusive transition to clean energy for the benefit of people and the planet.

Select on-street parking locations in zones A and C will host these new units, offering a seamless payment experience through Parkin's app and digital wallet, integrating both charging and parking fees in one transaction. DEWA's EV Green Charger network, launched in 2014, currently features around 740 charging points, with a goal to reach 1,000 by the end of this year.

MCE Participates in Egypt's Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change
Mohamed Mandour The Muslim Council of Elders participated in the Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change (LCOY Egypt 2025), organized by the Mediterranean Youth Foundation and hosted at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The event drew active participation from numerous institutions, as well as official, academic, and religious figures. In a recorded address broadcast during the opening session of the conference, His Excellency Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Elders, emphasized that climate change is a fundamental and existential issue that is closely linked to achieving social justice. He noted that it is also a humanitarian concern that threatens humanity and the shared planet we all inhabit. He explained that the Muslim Council of Elders has embraced this cause on multiple fronts, including its participation in several United Nations Climate Change Conferences, most recently COP28 in Dubai and COP29 in Azerbaijan. At these conferences, the Council launched a landmark initiative—the Faith Pavilion—which aimed to strengthen the role of religious leaders and figures in addressing the climate challenge. Judge Abdelsalam further noted that the Council also organized the Global Summit of Religious Leaders for Climate, which resulted in the issuance of the document titled The Call of Conscience: The Abu Dhabi Joint Declaration on Climate." This statement was signed by 30 of the world's most prominent religious leaders, including His Eminence Professor Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, and the late Pope Francis, former Pontiff of the Catholic Church. He also highlighted that, in recognition of the importance of youth engagement, the Council organized a climate-themed youth competition that attracted more than 50 participants from 11 countries around the world, aimed at involving youth in this global challenge. The Secretary-General commended the LCOY Egypt 2025 initiative, particularly as it was launched by Egyptian civil society. He expressed his confidence that such efforts would contribute positively to empowering youth to play a greater role in confronting climate change. He reaffirmed the Muslim Council of Elders' support for the initiative, stemming from its firm belief in the vital role of youth in addressing contemporary challenges and in promoting peace, coexistence, and human fraternity. It is worth noting that LCOY Egypt 2025 is being organized for the first time under the leadership of Egyptian civil society, across 11 governorates from May to November 2025, and concurrently in 110 countries around the world. The conference will culminate in a policy paper, which will be submitted annually in November to the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Recorded remarks at the opening session were delivered by Ambassador Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration; Dr. Alaa Farouk, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation; Dr. Mahmoud Seddiq, Vice President of Al-Azhar University; Dr. Heba Labib, Vice President of Nile University for Innovation and Entrepreneurship; and Dr. Ne'ma Sa'eed, Representative of the World Health Organization in Egypt. Egypt's Environment Minister chairs regional CEDARE meeting ahead of UN desertification role
Egypt's Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, chaired the 18th Board of Trustees meeting of the Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) on Monday, ahead of her upcoming appointment as Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The meeting, held at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, brought together senior Arab officials and international partners. Among the attendees were Saudi Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli—who co-chaired the meeting—UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment Amna Al-Dahak, Yemen's Minister of Water and Environment Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, and representatives from Jordan, Bahrain, the Arab League, the Islamic Development Bank, the University of Malta, and various UN programs. Egypt was also represented by Ali Abu Senna, CEO of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency. In her remarks, Fouad, who also serves as Deputy Chair of the SIDAR Board, commended Saudi Arabia's robust technical and financial support to CEDARE, calling it a 'model for institutional revitalization.' She expressed hope that this successful approach could be replicated in other regional organizations, such as the Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (PERSGA). She also praised Khaled Fahmy—CEDARE's interim Executive Director and former Egyptian Environment Minister—for his leadership in revitalizing the center's operations in recent months. Fouad underscored the need for CEDARE to continue aligning with Arab environmental priorities in the face of intensifying regional challenges. Fouad highlighted the strategic importance of Europe's involvement in CEDARE, urging member states to leverage recent political momentum following key climate milestones: Egypt's presidency of COP27, the UAE's leadership at COP28, and Saudi Arabia's forthcoming role as host of COP16 under the UNCCD. She noted that these events provide Arab countries with a timely opportunity to transform climate risks into development opportunities. Addressing the region's most critical environmental threats, she pointed to water scarcity and food insecurity—both exacerbated by climate change. She emphasized the potential of circular economy approaches, developed in cooperation with Saudi Arabia, to address these concerns through more efficient water use, waste management, and renewable energy adoption. Fouad called for a full strategic and administrative restructuring of CEDARE to enhance its effectiveness and responsiveness. She encouraged greater involvement from the private sector, viewing it as a key stakeholder in advancing regional sustainability. Concluding her speech, she thanked colleagues at CEDARE and the Egyptian Ministry of Environment, noting this would be her final participation in the meeting as minister before assuming her UN leadership role. In his address, Saudi Minister Al-Fadhli echoed the call for reform, emphasizing the need to redefine CEDARE's mission, strengthen its administrative and financial systems, and enhance its role in fostering Arab-European cooperation on environmental governance. He also highlighted regional sustainability efforts, including the Saudi-led Middle East Green Initiative and recent major UN climate conferences hosted in the region. CEDARE Executive Director Khaled Fahmy congratulated Fouad on her new appointment, reaffirming the center's commitment to fulfilling its mandate amid shifting regional needs. He welcomed ongoing discussions on institutional reforms, strategic planning, and building partnerships with academia and the private sector. During the session, Egypt's representative to the Arab League, Mahmoud Fathallah, presented a proposal to enhance regional collaboration on circular economy frameworks. Eng. Samah Saleh, Head of CEDARE's Sustainable Development Unit, underscored the urgency of improving resource efficiency in response to mounting environmental and economic pressures. The Board of Trustees approved a one-year extension of its current term and reviewed key financial and institutional reports. Discussions focused on governance reforms, partnership development, and setting strategic priorities for CEDARE's next phase.
