For the second week in a row, demonstrators gathered in the area to protest deportation efforts and other legislation they believe targets immigrants.
On Saturday, dozens of people lined the intersection of Seventh Street and Range Line Road in Joplin.
Priscila Orozco was holding signs with a group of her friends. She said they attended Saturday to stand for their parents and for those who couldn't be there.
'Most of us are kids of immigrants,' Orozco said. 'It's tough to see our parents walk around and be nervous. It's bad because we feel really helpless because we can't do anything to make our parents feel more comfortable.
"It's not fair because our parents are really good people, and a lot of people we know are immigrants, and it's sad to see them scared at this time.'
The protest also brought people representing many causes to the busy street corner, including those representing 4-States-4 Free Palestine, Joplin for Justice, LGBTQ+ rights and support for immigrants. McKenna Pulsipher helped organize Saturday's protest and said people from all causes are coming together to stand up for voices they believe are marginalized.
'This community needs to see us and know what we stand for,' Pulsipher said. 'Believing that your voice doesn't matter is where we begin to fail those who need us most.'
For Maria Lopez, another organizer of the protest, ending racism and racial profiling is a big issue for her. She is half Caucasian and half Guatemalan, and said she has been called an illegal immigrant because of her skin color.
'Jesus loves every human being, no matter what color you are,' Lopez said. 'If he was here today, he would be here with us.'
Holding her sign that read 'Hate Never Made America Great,' Orozco said it was good to see young people out there because it means they're becoming aware of the issues.
'They're beginning to see that it's not all sunshine and rainbows. I feel like we can make a difference, we're all together, we can all stand out.'
Hundreds of people gathered at Central Park in Carthage and near the Carthage Public Library along Garrison Avenue on Feb. 1, also protesting deportation efforts and other legislation they believe targets immigrants.
Many waved flags of Guatemala, Mexico, other Latin American nations and the United States.
Ellen Leon, an organizer of the first protest in Carthage, said there is a sense of fear within the Hispanic community in Carthage.
The protests follow confirmation from Carthage police Chief Bill Hawkins that officers with Immigration and Customs Enforcement were in Carthage. Hawkins told the Globe recently that agency officials came to the Carthage police station last week and announced they would be in town.
'They implied it would be for an undetermined time and they would be here frequently,' Hawkins said. 'But I'm not aware of anyone who was taken into custody.'
Hawkins told the Globe on Monday that he hadn't heard anything else from Immigration and Customs Enforcement since then.

Obama on DACA anniversary: Dreamers ‘being demonized and treated as enemies'
Former President Obama said Dreamers are 'being demonized and treated as enemies' in a social media post marking the 13th anniversary of his administration establishing the creation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. 'DACA was an example of how we can be a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws,' Obama said of the program, which was implemented to provide young immigrants who grew up in the United States temporary protection from deportation. 'And it's an example worth remembering today, when families with similar backgrounds who just want to live, work, and support their communities, are being demonized and treated as enemies,' he continued. The former president's post comes after authorities conducted several workplace raids across California in recent days, detaining employees and stunning business owners. In response to the raids, Los Angeles saw a wave of protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which devolved at times into violence. President Trump deployed the National Guard to address the demonstrations, over the objections and criticism of California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other Democrats. The Trump administration has since directed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to pause raids against select industries, citing a need to protect businesses as they lose 'long time workers,' whose jobs are 'almost impossible to replace.' Obama has previously expressed his support for DACA, saying in 2022 that the program has helped recipients to stop living in fear and instead live freely in the country in which they grew up. There are more than 530,000 active DACA recipients as of December. 'We can fix our broken immigration system while still recognizing our common humanity and treating each other with dignity and respect,' Obama said in his Sunday post. 'In fact, it's the only way we ever will.'

Trump to flood big cities like LA and NYC with ICE agents in ‘single largest Mass Deportation Program' in history
President Trump announced plans to flood Democrat-run cities, namely New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, with new, larger waves of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to bring about the 'single largest Mass Deportation Program in History.' Trump highlighted the sweeping change targeting the majority-Democrat cities on Truth Social Sunday night as he praised ICE agents for their 'incredible strength, determination, and courage.' 4 President Trump announced that sanctuary cities in Democratic states will be flooded with ICE agents. REUTERS Advertisement 'In order to achieve this, we must expand efforts to detain and deport Illegal Aliens in America's largest Cities, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, where Millions upon Millions of Illegal Aliens reside,' Trump wrote. 4 Trump specifically cited Democratic cities, claiming that their leaders were using illegal immigrants to do things like rig elections. Matthew McDermott None of the Lone Star State's big urban centers, however, call themselves 'sanctuary cities.' 'These Radical Left Democrats are sick of mind, hate our Country, and actually want to destroy our Inner Cities — And they are doing a good job of it!' the commander in chief added in his post. Advertisement 'And that is why I want ICE, Border Patrol, and our Great and Patriotic Law Enforcement Officers, to FOCUS on our crime ridden and deadly Inner Cities, and those places where Sanctuary Cities play such a big role. You don't hear about Sanctuary Cities in our Heartland!' Trump previously pledged that 'changes are coming' last week after admitting that his administration's crackdown on immigration was massacring key American industries — namely farming and hospitality. The Department of Agriculture estimates that nearly half of the 850,000 crop workers in the United States are undocumented, putting America's food supply chain at risk of total collapse if all are deported. While New York State is home to the largest sanctuary city in the country, it ranks first nationally in the production of many crops and products, including household staples like yogurt and cottage cheese, according to the New York Farm Bureau. Advertisement 4 ICE agents' raids have scared many immigrants into hiding. Matthew McDermott With Trump's focus set on sanctuary cities, it is unclear how other parts of Democratic states may be impacted, or if ICE activity will primarily center on metropolitan areas going forward. Even so, raids have already expanded beyond the fields with ICE agents turning up anywhere from courthouses to schools. The shift quickly scared many immigrant workers away from the public eye. Data cited by the Wall Street Journal showed how immigrants' purchasing habits dramatically shifted online. Large brands also saw a steep decrease in Hispanic customer traffic, with places that have fallen victim to raids like Home Depot seeing an 8.7% drop.

Trump orders ICE to step up deportation efforts in Democrat-run cities
President Trump has ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement to "expand efforts to detain and deport" undocumented immigrants in Democratic-run cities. The big picture: Trump's targeting of Democrat-run cities comes as California's Democratic leaders challenge him in the courts over his deployment of the state National Guard and U.S. Marines to ICE protests in Los Angeles — one of the cities he singled out in Sunday's Truth Social post. It builds on the president's April order directing federal agencies to document " sanctuary cities" that are not complying with his immigration agenda, when the White House said those that failed to do so "may lose federal funding" — prompting a coalition of 20 Democratic attorneys general to file lawsuits against the administration. And follows top Trump aide Stephen Miller and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem demanding last month that ICE seek to arrest 3,000 people a day — triple what agents were arresting in the early days of the second administration. Driving the news: Trump wrote he's ordering ICE officers via Truth Social to "do all in their power to achieve the very important goal of delivering the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History." To achieve this, Trump wrote "we must expand efforts to detain and deport Illegal Aliens in America's largest Cities, such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, where Millions upon Millions of Illegal Aliens reside." He added that these and other cities were the "core of the Democrat Power Center" as he echoed baseless claims he made during the 2024 presidential election about Democrats using undocumented immigrants to "cheat in Elections," among other allegations that he did not provide evidence on.
