Why a San Francisco Mini-Chain of Italian Restaurants Just Filed for Bankruptcy

Eater22-05-2025

Have no fear: Though two Fiorella locations in San Francisco just filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, they're not going anywhere. The popular Italian restaurant mini-chain's co-owner Brandon Gillis told the San Francisco Chronicle the decision was 'calculated.' The two outposts in question are the Clement Street restaurant and the Ninth Avenue Sunset spot. Operations at the two restaurants, and the two other Fiorellas in San Francisco, remain unchanged.
The Clement Street restaurant filed for bankruptcy on Tuesday, May 20, and the Sunset restaurant on Tuesday, April 1. Court documents reviewed by the Chronicle show the Richmond District restaurant owes 'just over $1 million to creditors including wine distributors, meat purveyors and the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration.' The Sunset outpost's 'total liabilities were between $500,000 and $1 million.' New fancy steakhouse bound for Levi's Stadium
The Clara District, San Jose's still-being-built neighborhood next to the home of the Sharks, just received confirmation of its first anchor restaurant. An unnamed 'Italian-style steakhouse' is en route before Super Bowl 2026, which will be hosted at Levi's Stadium. The Mercury News reports the business comes from the same team behind Saratoga restaurants Hero Ranch Kitchen and Flowers. It'll go inside the AVE Santa Clara upscale apartments, a new development that will eventually house thousands of residents. Baklava cafe opening in Upper Haight
There's something in the water outside Buena Vista Park (no, nothing like that). Across the street from newcomer Coffee Llama — in the former Ritual Coffee location — Cafe Velora is set to open any day now. The business will be open seven days a week, selling coffee, sandwiches, bagels, and baklava. Velora takes over the dormant 1317 Haight Street lease, next to the former Central Haight Cafe. Solo chef-driven pop-up announces summer dates
Tartufino, which debuted last fall, is run by chef-owner Shawn Phillips and is a no-joke operation. In a city awash with pop-ups, this one comes with a top-tier pedigree: Phillips cooked at the French Laundry, Saison, and Atelier Crenn, to name a few. His new-ish operation is busy this summer, taking over Tal Palo in Los Altos on June 7, 14, 21, and 28. In the city, he'll cook at Birba on June 8, 15, 22, and 29. Sunnova Secures $90 Million Lifeline to Support Bankruptcy Sale

Sunnova Energy International Inc. won court approval to start drawing on a new $90 million bankruptcy loan, funding that will help keep the rooftop solar company afloat while it sells its business in Chapter 11. During a Thursday court hearing, Judge Alfredo Perez authorized Sunnova to make an initial $15 million draw on the loan, and said the company could seek approval to draw the remaining amount at a future hearing. The financing came together in the days after Sunnova sought court protection and gives the company runway to continue marketing its assets. Lenders providing the loan have also agreed to acquire Sunnova's assets, an offer that would be subject to higher bids at a future Chapter 11 auction.

Canadian Asian grocery chain T&T Supermarket continues expansion in SoCal

Canada's largest Asian grocery chain is opening its second store in Southern California and the fourth in the state in Chino Hills. The T&T Supermarket will open in the Los Angeles suburb in the fall of 2026 and offer an assortment of Asian snacks, fresh produce and live seafood, according to a statement. The grocer is popular in Canada for Asian street food and a variety of hot food cooked on site. T&T Supermarket operates more than 38 stores in Vancouver, Toronto and other Canadian cities. The first U.S. location opened in Bellevue, Wash., in December 2024, and the company also has plans to open stores in Irvine, San Francisco and San Jose by the end of next year. Plans for the new store come as other grocers eye expansion in Southern California this year, including Aldi, Trader Joe's and Erewhon. The 61,000-square-foot Chino Hills store will be situated in the Crossroads Marketplace mall among Costco and PetSmart, and will be the chain's largest location in California. 'Chino Hills is a wonderful community to live, and we can't wait to add to the local food scene,' said T&T Chief Executive Tina Lee in a statement. 'We're transforming two vacant retail spaces, a former Best Buy and Bed Bath & Beyond, into one big food destination.' The store will create 350 jobs for the local community and offer unique products including Taiwanese-style rice rolls and Chinese crepes, the company said. T&T Supermarket first opened in British Columbia in 1993 and is currently run by the founder's daughter, Lee, who took over in 2014. Canadian retailer Loblaw Companies acquired the chain in 2009, though it is operated as an independent subsidiary.

This Airline Abruptly Shut Down Leaving Caribbean-bound Travelers Completely Stranded—What to Know

Silver Airways suddenly shut down operations. The regional carrier operated flights throughout the Bahamas and Caribbean islands. Travelers will receive automatic refunds, but will need to book their flights on a separate carrier. Travelers visiting the Caribbean should carefully review their upcoming travel airline Silver Airways, which operated local flights through the region, has abruptly shut down all operations. 'We regret to inform you that we are ceasing operations as of today, June 11, 2025,' the airline shared in an Instagram post directed to customers. For passengers who have a scheduled Silver Airways flight, the airline says they should not go to the airport, and credit card refunds will be processed directly to travel agencies and individual credit card holders. Silver Airways announced on Dec. 30, 2024 that it had "voluntarily filed for Chapter 11" bankruptcy protection, and said that all tickets would remain valid. During that process, the airline says it tried finding a buyer, but ultimately had to close. 'Silver entered into a transaction to sell its assets to another airline holding company, who unfortunately has determined to not continue Silver's flight operations in Florida, the Bahamas and the Caribbean,' the airline added in its post to customers. Travelers shared frustration, sharing they were unaware that Silver Airways was facing financial difficulties, and booked a ticket for an upcoming trip, even checking in for the flight successfully the evening before the shutdown. 'No email. No text,' the traveler shared in the social media thread on Reddit. 'I was very much one of those people who showed up at the airport and waited by the gate and realized that no one was there. Insane.'Other travelers shared previous frustration with the airline, saying they were stranded in the Bahamas."Sad day," one traveler shared in a comment on the social media thread about the closure. "I feel bad for all the employees." The airline operated an extensive route network connecting Florida, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and other Caribbean islands. Frequent visitors to the area may be familiar with Seaborne Airlines, which Silver Airways acquired in 2018. For travelers facing a rebooking situation, many airlines service the route network that Silver maintained. For example, for travelers visiting St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (STT), American Airlines, Cape Air, JetBlue, Spirit, and United Airlines provide flights to the island.
