
Punjab's bullet train dreams derailed by ground realities
The Punjab government's plan to operate Pakistan's first bullet train between Lahore and Rawalpindi appears far from reality, as senior railway officials term the idea a "dream" given the country's outdated rail infrastructure and immense financial requirements.
According to details, while Punjab's leadership is eager to introduce a fast rail system, a complete overhaul of tracks, stations, signals, coaches, engines and supporting systems would be required even for a high-speed train, let alone a bullet train.
Officials said the current railway infrastructure is not capable of supporting speeds over 100 km/h.
"It's a dream," a senior railway official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said.
They pointed out that the cost per kilometre for a bullet train project was exorbitant, as it would require $40 million per km if executed by an American company, and $1720 million per km for Chinese companies.
Railway officials have nonetheless drafted various proposals for a high-speed alternative. Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi, in a conversation with The Express Tribune, confirmed the ambition. "We already have coaches that could support high-speed travel, but the tracks are not compatible," he said.
"However, we are determined to execute this project. After consultations with Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz, our target is to reduce travel time between Lahore and Rawalpindi to 2.5 hours. Punjab will fund the project."
The 280-kilometre route, however, presents multiple challenges as several insiders are not optimistic.
Experts say even marginal speed improvements would require massive investment, potentially ranging between Rs200 billion and Rs300 billion, and years of development.
Currently, the fastest service, Pakistan Railways' Green Line, takes 4 to 4.5 hours to complete the journey. Other trains take 5 to 5.5 hours.
Officials point out that the Lahore-Rawalpindi track was curvy and uneven, with steep inclines and declines that make high-speed travel unsafe. There are also three bridges on the route that would need complete reconstruction to support the required velocity.
"We don't even have engines or coaches fit for a bullet train. Forget bullet trains, even improving average speeds will need hundreds of billions and a proper plan, a senior railway official explained further.
He said that bullet trains required new systems entirely, as seen in Japan, China and select European countries where speeds range between 200 to 500 km/h, and even more today. He added that while nothing is "impossible," the country must be realistic. Even in the United States, no full-fledged bullet train network exists. Instead, a high-speed system could be a viable and relatively affordable alternative. He also noted that work on Main Line-1 (ML-1) – a vital infrastructure project has been stalled since 2015.
"If ML-1 is completed, we won't even need a bullet train. That's the key. Everything would need to be built from scratch for a bullet system. Given the cost, we should seriously engage China to complete ML-1. It's the best option right now," he added.
The projected ticket price for a bullet train also raises affordability concerns. The fare could exceed Rs15,000 to Rs20,000 per passenger, making it inaccessible for most travellers.
He compared it with Saudi Arabia's Haramain High Speed Railway, which costs 130 to 220 Saudi Riyals (roughly Rs10,000 to Rs18,000), a rate made viable through heavy government subsidies. In Europe, bullet train fares are often twice as expensive as regular trains.

Asia shares, dollar slip as tariff tensions darken mood
SYDNEY: Asian share markets and the dollar made a soft start on Monday as U.S.-China trade tensions continued to simmer, while investors turned defensive ahead of key U.S. jobs data and a widely expected cut in European interest rates. There was little obvious reaction to President Donald Trump's threat late Friday to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminium to 50%, beginning on June 4, a sudden twist that drew the ire of European Union negotiators. Speaking on Sunday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Trump would soon speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping to iron out a dispute over critical minerals. Beijing then forcefully rejected Trump's trade criticism, suggesting a call might be some time coming. White House officials also continued to play down a court ruling that Trump had overstepped his authority by imposing across-the-board duties on imports from U.S. trading partners. 'The court ruling will complicate the path ahead on trade policy, but there remains an ample set of provisions available to the administration to deliver its desired results,' said Bruce Kasman, chief economist at JPMorgan. 'There is a commitment to maintaining a minimum U.S. tariff rate of at least 10% and imposing further sector tariff increases,' he added. 'An increase in ASEAN to discourage transhipment looks likely, and the bias for higher tariffs on U.S.-EU trade persists.' Markets will be particularly interested to see if Trump goes ahead with the 50% tariff on Wednesday, or backs off as he has done so often before. Cattle prices surge by up to 70%
With Eidul Azha just around the corner, the sale of sacrificial animals has gathered pace across the metropolitan city, with markets seeing an uptick in activity. However, buyers are facing steep price hikes, with the cost of sacrificial animals surging by 50 to 70 per cent compared to last year. In various cattle markets of the metropolis, the starting price for goats is now around Rs40,000, while heifers - regardless of weight - are hardly available for less than Rs140,000. Last year, a low-weight heifer could still be purchased for under Rs100,000 were now fetching Rs200,000 or more. Buyers are increasingly frustrated at the lack of official regulation in animal pricing. Traders are setting prices arbitrarily, leaving buyers to negotiate deals through bargaining. Traders attribute the increase in prices to several factors, including the rising cost of animal feed, transportation, and other logistical expenses. "The cost of fodder alone has surged by over 50 per cent," Kashif Qureshi, a trader, told The Express Tribune. He added that animals are bought from larger markets in Punjab and Sindh, and medium-sized traders then transport them to Karachi - incurring fuel, tax, and miscellaneous expenses. "The total cost accumulates through various stages - purchasing from big traders, transportation to Karachi, and maintenance at the local markets, including lighting and security," Qureshi added. "Only after accounting for all these factors do traders add their margin, which can range from Rs15,000 to Rs50,000 for smaller animals and Rs50,000 to Rs200,000 or more for larger animals." Traders say that the pricing of animals is also influenced by breed, appearance, and weight. "While 13 government-designated cattle markets operate in Karachi, animals are also being sold informally in various neighbourhoods," said another trader, Arif Qureshi. He explained that cows, heifers, and camels are among the large animals available, but due to the current price surge, many middle-income families are struggling to afford them. Heifers of average weight are now selling between Rs200,000 and Rs300,000, while heavier, premium animals are priced between Rs400,000 and Rs1 million. Elite buyers are purchasing high-end animals ranging from Rs1.2 million to Rs2 million or more. As Eidul Azha nears, buyers are increasingly visiting the markets during evening and nighttime hours, typically seeking medium-sized heifers for around Rs200,000. Most animals are sourced from various districts across Punjab. In the goat market, prices have also risen sharply. Saifuddin, a goat trader, told The Express Tribune that medium-weight goats that were previously sold for Rs30,000 to Rs35,000 are now priced at Rs50,000 to Rs60,000. The starting price for goats is around Rs40,000, with some reaching up to Rs300,000, depending on breed and build. Rams and sheep are similarly priced, ranging from Rs40,000 to Rs200,000 or more. Their valuation is also driven by factors such as weight, breed, and appearance, according to trader Rashid Saleem. Camel trader Ibrahim Din spoke about a growing trend in camel sacrifices over the past two years, though it remains relatively limited. He said camels brought in from different districts of Sindh now cost Rs300,000 and above. Karachiites have voiced their concern over the sharp rise in prices. Saeed-ul-Zafar from Nazimabad said the same heifer he purchased for Rs150,000 last year cost him Rs240,000 this time. "There needs to be a government-regulated pricing mechanism for sacrificial animals," he urged. Similarly, Asif Abbasi from Saddar criticised the lack of oversight, saying, "Traders are charging arbitrary prices. I bought a goat for Rs60,000 this year, which cost me just Rs35,000 last Eid." With no formal pricing framework in place, people are left to navigate the inflated market through direct negotiations with traders - hoping to uphold the tradition of sacrifice amidst economic challenges.
