
Study links climate change with rising arsenic levels in rice, increasing cancer risks for Asians

Researchers from Columbia University, US, explained that an increase in temperatures above 2 degrees Celsius and rising levels of carbon dioxide could be causing changes in soil chemistry, favouring arsenic, which gets more easily absorbed into a rice grain.
Contaminated soil and irrigated water while growing rice are known to increase inorganic arsenic in rice.
An increased exposure to arsenic is known to heighten the risk of cancers of the lung, bladder and skin, among others. Rice can also absorb additional arsenic from water used for cooking.
"Our results suggest that this increase in arsenic levels could significantly elevate the incidence of heart disease, diabetes, and other non-cancer health effects," author Lewis Ziska, associate professor of environmental health sciences, Columbia University, said.
Health risks and projections
"As rice is a dietary staple in many parts of the world, these changes could lead to a substantial rise in the global burden of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and other arsenic-related health issues," Ziska said.
Studies have revealed rice consumption to be a major health threat to people in South and Southeast Asian countries, including India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam, where rice is the staple food.
The combined effects of rising CO2 and temperatures on arsenic accumulation in rice have not been studied in detail until now, the team said.
In this study, the researchers measured the effects of rising temperatures and carbon dioxide on 28 rice strains over 10 years in the field. Using models, inorganic arsenic doses and health risks for seven Asian countries -- Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Vietnam -- were estimated.
"We found that temperature and CO2 act synergistically to increase arsenic concentrations in rice, compounding dietary arsenic exposures for rice consumers and leading to projected cancer cases in the tens of millions among populations of Asian countries in 2050," according to the study.
Projected average cases of bladder and lung cancer in 2050 were found to increase in proportion with exposure to arsenic, with the highest risk projections (44 per cent) seen for rising temperatures and carbon dioxide levels.
China was projected to see 1.34 crore cases of cancer attributable to arsenic in rice in 2050 -- the highest among the seven countries studied.
"Emerging evidence also suggests that arsenic exposure may be linked to diabetes, adverse pregnancy outcomes, neurodevelopmental issues, and immune system effects," Ziska said.
Mitigation strategies
The authors suggested measures to reduce arsenic exposure, including breeding plants to minimise arsenic uptake and improved soil management in rice paddies, along with public health initiatives.

The machine heats moondust to a temperature of up to 1300 degrees Celsius by amplifying the available sunlight by 3000 times. The superheated furnace melts the dust and shapes it into durable space bricks. The machine was first tested with volcanic ash on Earth, but melting regolith is a challenging task as its composition varies in different spots on the lunar surface due to radiation exposure, temperature fluctuations and micrometeorites striking the moon. Where will the bricks be tested? China's Tianzhou-8 mission ferried a cache of regolith bricks to space where they will undergo rigorous testing for radiation and temperature effects for three years at the Tiangong Space Station. These tests are designed to determine their durability and efficacy for building installations on the moon. In 2020, China's Chang-e-5 mission brought back soil samples from the moon, and soon Chinese engineers designed a machine to create moondust bricks after studying the composition of regolith. The Chang-e-8 mission, which aims to lay the foundation of a Chinese research base on the moon, will carry the technology with it to the lunar surface in 2028. When China plans to build a lunar city? According to reports, China's Chang-E-7 mission will head to the moon in 2026 to search for water on the lunar south pole, while a manned mission is planned for 2030, and a permanent research base along with a lunar colony, is expected to be operational by 2035. Notably, China and Russia have teamed up to build a nuclear power plant on the Moon, which will power the proposed International Lunar Research Station (ILRS). The revolutionary project is expected to be completed by 2036.

They're easy to store, have a long shelf life, and are available in almost every supermarket or corner shop. Noodles also carry cultural significance. For many international students and migrants, they're a familiar taste in an unfamiliar place. A packet of Maggi mi goreng, a bowl of Shin Ramyun, or a serving of Indomie can instantly transport someone back to a childhood kitchen, a bustling night market, or a late-night supper with friends. These dishes aren't just quick meals – they hold memory, identity, and belonging. In a new environment, they offer both a full belly and a sense of home. But what's actually in a pack? While instant noodles offer comfort and familiarity, their nutritional profile has room for improvement. A standard packet of instant noodles is made from wheat flour noodles and a packet of flavour enhancers. Some fancier versions also include dried vegetables or crispy fried garlic. Instead, you can upgrade your bowl with a few easy additions, by: adding vegetables (toss in a handful of frozen peas, spinach, broccoli, carrots or whatever's on hand to bump up your fibre, vitamins and texture) including protein (add a boiled or fried egg, tofu cubes, edamame beans, shredded chicken or tinned beans to help you stay full longer and support muscle and immune health) cutting back on the flavour sachet (these are often the main source of salt, so try using half or less of the sachet or mixing in low-sodium stock, garlic, ginger, herbs or chilli instead) trying wholegrain or air-dried noodles (some brands now offer higher-fibre options made with buckwheat, brown rice or millet, so check the ingredients on the back of the packet to see the main source of grain). Ditch the noodle? Not at all. Like most foods, instant noodles can fit into a healthy diet, just not as the main event every day. Think of your body like a car. Instant noodles are like fuel which can give you enough to get you moving, but not enough to keep the engine running smoothly over time. Noodles definitely have a place in busy lives and diverse kitchens. With a few pantry staples and simple tweaks, you can keep the comfort and convenience, while also adding a whole lot more nourishment.

40 Indians Hospitalised After Drinking Toxic Alcohol In Kuwait
Kuwait's health ministry said 63 people had suffered methanol poisoning from contaminated alcoholic drinks in the five days to Wednesday, resulting in 13 deaths and 21 cases of blindness or impaired vision. The ministry said in a statement on X late on Wednesday that all those affected were of Asian nationalities, adding that 51 required urgent kidney dialysis and 31 needed mechanical ventilation. Kuwait bans the import or domestic production of alcoholic beverages, but some is manufactured in the country illegally in secret locations that lack any oversight or safety standards, exposing consumers to the risk of poisoning. The Embassy of India in Kuwait, which has the largest expatriate community in the country, said around 40 Indian nationals in Kuwait have been hospitalized in the last few days, without specifying the cause. "There have been some fatalities, some are in a critical condition while others are recovering," it added in a statement on X, noting that it is seeking further details.
