
What's Really Going On With AI In Schools? A High School Student's POV
There's a conversation about Artificial Intelligence happening in school administration offices and teacher social media circles. It's full of words like 'disruption,' 'guardrails,' and 'the future of work.' Then there's the conversation happening in high school students' group chats. It's about how to get the history essay done by 11 PM.
The two conversations have almost nothing to do with each other.
I recently had a chance to talk with William Liang, a high school student from San Jose, California, and frankly, he offered one of the clearest views I've heard yet on what's actually happening on the ground. This isn't just any student. William is a seriously impressive high school journalist, with published work in places like the San Francisco Chronicle and The San Diego Union-Tribune.
He's living and breathing this stuff every day, and his message is simple: our school system is playing a game of checkers while its students are mastering 3D chess. The way we teach and test kids is fundamentally broken in the age of AI, and our attempts to "catch" them are missing the point entirely.
Here's the first truth bomb William dropped, and it reframes the entire issue. We need to accept that for a huge number of students, an assignment isn't a journey of intellectual discovery.
'For most students, an assignment is not interpreted as a cognitive development tool, but as a logistical hurdle,' he told me. Think about that. It's a hurdle to be cleared as efficiently as possible. 'Right now,' he said, 'that mechanism is generative AI.'
This isn't really about kids being lazy or immoral. It's about them being smart players in a game we designed. For decades, the system has screamed one thing above all else: grades matter more than understanding. When the goal is the A grade, and a tool exists that gets you there in a fraction of the time, why wouldn't you use it?
As William put it, 'If there's an easy shortcut, why wouldn't we take it?' He sees it as a predictable outcome. When you have a high-pressure, competitive game where a growing number of players can cheat with a huge upside and a tiny risk, everyone else feels forced to cheat just to keep up.
So, what about the teachers? The plagiarism checkers? The honor codes?
According to William, it's mostly security theater. The whole enforcement system is, in his words, 'incoherent.'
He explained that 'students are 'warned' all the time but rarely penalized because the enforcement apparatus is incoherent. Detection tools operate on heuristics, which include vocabulary uniformity, sentence structure, and semantic burstiness; however, students generally learn quickly how to avoid triggering them. Teachers are busy. They rarely follow up unless something seems egregiously wrong, and even then, they have little evidentiary protocol. And when they do think they've 'caught' someone, they're often wrong.'
The anecdotes he shared are both hilarious and horrifying. He told me about a friend, who described a situation at his school. 'A guy I know who used AI to write an essay literally had the words 'as an AI language model myself,' and he kept it in and didn't get caught for it,' William recounted. Think about that. The AI confessed to writing the essay in the essay itself, and no one noticed. 'Meanwhile,' he continued, 'another person got flagged on an essay they spent a week writing and had to show the version history on the essay to prove he wrote it.'
This is where things got really interesting. He argued that we're all using the wrong words. The line between 'using a tool' and 'cheating' isn't about academic integrity anymore. In the real world, it's about one thing: Can you get caught?
'The designation of 'cheating' doesn't rest on the method but on the detectability,' he argued. Because detection is basically a coin flip, the official labels of "legitimate" and "illegitimate" use just fall apart.
If the old system is broken, the only move left is to change the game board itself. William's solution isn't more complicated software or another all-school assembly on academic honesty.
It's one, simple, radical rule.
I asked him what single policy he would mandate in high schools. His answer was:
'Teachers should not be allowed to assign take-home work that ChatGPT can do. Period!'
Read that again. He's not saying 'no more homework.' He's saying that any essay, problem set, or report with a predictable structure that's done without supervision is now an invalid test of a student's knowledge. It only tests their ability to write a good prompt.
The real work. The thinking, the analyzing and the creating, has to be brought back into the classroom where it can be seen. How do you assess real understanding? The old ways, it turns out, still work beautifully. "Drafting essays and solving math problems," he said. You just have to watch them do it. Think in-class essays, oral presentations, and group projects where the process is as important as the product.
But here's the thing that makes William's perspective so powerful. He's not an AI doomer. In fact, he's incredibly optimistic about the technology. He just thinks we're focusing on the bad use cases for it.
'There is no inherent tension between embracing AI and preserving critical thinking or creativity, unless schools force one,' he insisted. The problem isn't the tool; it's the task.
He asked me to flip the question. 'Imagine students had daily access to the greatest minds in science, literature, and art?' he posed. 'Students working closely with advanced AI will be like directly apprenticing with Ernest Hemingway, Isaac Newton, or Leonardo da Vinci. Why would we deny students this opportunity?'
Now that's a vision. Imagine your kid getting feedback on their short story from a bot that thinks like Hemingway—a bot that could say, "Great start, but a master of prose would cut these three adverbs and find a stronger verb here." Imagine an AI tutor that can generate a thousand different math problems tailored to exactly where your child is struggling, offering hints 24/7.
That's the right use of the tool. AI shouldn't be the thing that completes the assignment for the student. It should be the thing that helps the student complete the assignment better. He gave a perfect example: a good assignment could be grading students on a conversation they have with an AI chatbot on a complex topic. The AI is part of the learning, but the student is still doing all the critical thinking.
The takeaway from William is a wakeup call. For anyone in a leadership position. A parent, an educator, or a business leader. It's time to get honest. Stop asking "how do we catch them?" and start asking "what should we be asking of them in the first place?"
The students are already living in the future. As William put it, 'The biggest misconception surrounding AI adoption is that adults don't realize students are light-years ahead of them. I use ChatGPT more than Instagram, which is astonishing.'
It's time for the rest of us to catch up.

Over 1.1 million Anker power banks recalled due to fire hazard, officials say
More than 1.15 million portable power banks are being recalled nationwide after several incidents of overheating, fires and explosions were reported, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The recall affects Anker Innovations' 'PowerCore 10000' portable chargers with model number A1263. The lithium-ion battery in these devices can overheat and pose a risk of melting, smoke, and fire, the CPSC said in a safety alert issued Thursday. Anker, which is based in China, acknowledged the safety concerns and said the recall is being conducted 'out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of our customers.' The company and CPSC have documented at least 19 incidents involving the chargers, including two cases where users suffered minor burns and 11 reports of property damage totaling more than $60,700. The recalled chargers were sold online between June 2016 and December 2022 for about $27. Retailers included Anker's website, Amazon, eBay and Newegg. Customers who have the affected model are advised to stop using it immediately. Anker is offering free replacements, but consumers must first submit a photo of their power bank showing the model number, serial number, their name, the date, and the word 'recalled' written on the product. Both Anker and the CPSC emphasized that these devices should not be disposed of in regular trash or curbside recycling due to the fire risk from lithium-ion batteries. Instead, users should follow local disposal guidelines for electronics or hazardous materials. Consumers can find more information and register for the recall at Anker's recall site.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is moving the needle significantly for Broadcom, and that trend could continue thanks to the huge addressable market it is serving. The chipmaker is now expected to clock stronger growth in the coming years thanks to AI. The stock has made a big move in the past couple of months, jumping an impressive 41% as of this writing and going well past $1 trillion in market cap. The good part is that Broadcom is scratching the surface of a massive opportunity in the AI chip market that could help it sustain solid growth rates for a long time to come. Of course, buying just Broadcom and hoping that it will help you become a millionaire isn't a smart thing to do, as any cracks in the company's growth story could send the stock plunging. However, Broadcom looks like an ideal pick for investors aiming to construct a diversified million-dollar portfolio. Let's look at the reasons why. Broadcom released its fiscal 2025 second-quarter results (for the three months ended May 4) on June 5. Its revenue jumped 20% year over year to $15 billion, while adjusted earnings shot up at a stronger pace of 43%. AI played a key role in driving this robust growth. The company's AI revenue jumped 46% year over year to $4.4 billion, which means it's now getting almost 30% of its top line by supplying chips powering this technology. What's worth noting here is that Broadcom is anticipating further acceleration in its AI revenue in the current quarter, projecting $5.1 billion in revenue. That would be an improvement of 60% from the year-ago period. What's more, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan indicated on the latest earnings conference call that the company's AI revenue growth trajectory is sustainable. Tan remarked that the growth rate Broadcom is witnessing so far in fiscal 2025 "will presumably continue." That's not surprising, considering that Broadcom is now seeing stronger demand for its custom AI chips (known as XPUs) for inference purposes. Management says that the three existing customers who are deploying its custom chips in data centers for AI training remain firm in their infrastructure investment plans, despite the economic uncertainty created by the tariff war. At the same time, those three customers "are doubling down on inference in order to monetize their platforms," which is why the company anticipates "an acceleration of XPU demand into the back half of 2026 to meet urgent demand for inference on top of the demand we have indicated from training." A big reason why Broadcom should be able to sustain its impressive AI revenue growth rate is because of the massive addressable opportunity worth $60 billion to $90 billion that it sees for its AI chips by fiscal 2027 based on the three customers it's currently serving. Given that the company has generated $13.6 billion in revenue from sales of its AI chips in the first three quarters of the year, it still has a lot of room to grow in this market. That's especially true considering that another four hyperscalers are in negotiations with Broadcom for manufacturing custom AI processors. As a result, Broadcom may be sitting on a much larger AI-related addressable market, which explains why analysts have raised their growth expectations for the company following its latest results. Broadcom is trading at just under 38 times forward earnings as of this writing following its recent surge. While that may seem expensive at first, we have seen that the company's outstanding earnings growth justifies its rich valuation. Another important thing worth noting is that Broadcom's price/earnings-to-growth ratio (PEG ratio) based on its projected earnings growth for the next five years stands at just 0.66, according to Yahoo! Finance. The PEG ratio is a forward-looking valuation metric calculated by dividing a company's price-to-earnings ratio by its estimated annual earnings growth rate for the next five years. A reading of less than 1 means that the stock in question is undervalued, and Broadcom's multiple is well below that mark. All this makes Broadcom a solid growth stock to buy right now, since it seems built for terrific long-term upside and has the potential to contribute positively toward a million-dollar portfolio. As cloud hyperscalers such as Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Oracle continue investing in data center build-outs, the need for infrastructure services is rising. I'm not talking about the companies that are contracted to construct data centers or supply raw materials to manufacture chips, though. Rather, I'm more focused on how AI developers access the chip clusters that are stored in these data centers. One company leading the charge in infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) is CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV), which went public earlier this year. At the time of this writing, shares are up 300% since its IPO date. So, could CoreWeave be the next millionaire-maker AI stock? Read on to find out. By now, it's no longer a secret that cloud hyperscalers and other tech juggernauts like Meta Platforms or Elon Musk's new start-up, xAI, have been some of the biggest customers of graphics processing units (GPUs) and network infrastructure equipment from Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, and Broadcom over the last couple of years. While that's great news for chip designers, there are a couple of nuances to point out. First, matching chip supply with rising demand has been a challenge for semiconductor businesses recently. As such, supply constraint businesses are able to leverage high degrees of pricing power -- essentially making it more difficult for small companies in the playing field to purchase adequate hardware. This logjam is where CoreWeave is making a difference. CoreWeave offers a flexible model by which its customers can access GPU architectures through a cloud-based infrastructure. Essentially, CoreWeave is removing the middleman (i.e., chip manufacturers) for its customers -- giving them a more efficient, less capital-intensive mechanism to access high-performance GPUs as needed. While the use case CoreWeave is trying to solve may seem like a no-brainer, that doesn't necessarily mean investors should blindly invest in the company. Not only is CoreWeave stock up by a meaningful amount since its IPO earlier this year, but the majority of gains really occurred throughout the month of May. With that in mind, the valuation expansion pictured becomes even more pronounced. Given the share price trends illustrated, my concern around an investment in CoreWeave right now is that the stock has turned into a bit of a momentum opportunity. Given the ongoing upward trajectory of the stock, my suspicion is that CoreWeave has indeed made many people millionaires this year. However, the caveat I see is that most of those investors were either involved with the company prior to its IPO or bought shares shortly following the initial pop and subsequent drop in CoreWeave during April. For these reasons, I think it's unlikely that investing in CoreWeave at its current peaking valuation will turn you into a millionaire this year. With that said, I still find the company's value proposition to be compelling. And secular trends suggest that AI infrastructure spend, particularly on hardware, should reach the trillions over just the next five years. Those tailwinds bode well for CoreWeave. In my view, CoreWeave could be a millionaire-maker stock -- just not for long-term investors in 2025. I think a more prudent approach is to wait for a dip opportunity to scoop up shares at a more reasonable valuation. From there, holding on to your position for the long run as the AI narrative continues to unfold could one day turn your initial investment in CoreWeave into a lucrative multibagger position.
