"Not A Loss For India...": South Africa Great Delivers Cut-Throat 'Honest' Verdict On Rohit Sharma's Retirement
Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket ahead of India's five-match Test series in England in June. Amid reports that Rohit was set to be removed from captaincy, the 37-year-old announced his retirement from the longest format of the game. Rohit's retirement came after a disastrous tour of Australia, during which he managed just 31 runs in five innings. South Africa great Daryll Cullinan has spoken strongly on Rohit's retirement, however, stating that India will not miss him much in Tests.
Rohit retired having made 4,301 runs in 67 Test matches at an average of over 40, as well as winning 12 out of his 24 Tests as captain of India. However, Cullinan felt that his retirement from Test cricket was long overdue.
"Rohit's retirement was probably long overdue in terms of test cricket away from India. Let's be honest about it," Cullinan said, speaking to Hindustan Times.
"He hasn't really been the player that he throughout his career has been at home and we saw reluctance from him in recent Australian series to really take it on and lead from the front. So I don't see that as being a loss for India at all," Cullinan added.
Prior to the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, Rohit had also had a rough patch with the bat during the Test series against New Zealand.
Rohit's last good run of form with the bat in Test cricket came when India hosted England in early 2024. Rohit slammed more than 400 runs with the bat across five Tests in that series.
Rohit's retirement has left India with a big hole to fill for the England series in terms of the captain, and not only with the bat. Sources have pointed that Shubman Gill is set to take over as India's new Test captain.

PBKS coach Ponting reacts to Kohli's emotional celebration following RCB's maiden IPL title: 'It's not easy...'
Virat Kohli was overcome with emotion after Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Punjab Kings by 6 runs in the final of the Indian Premier League in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, winning their maiden title in the process after finishing runners-up thrice in the past. read more While Virat Kohli's dream of winning the IPL with RCB finally came true after 18 long seasons, Ricky Ponting suffered a heartbreak in his first season as PBKS coach. AP Virat Kohli's emotional celebration after Royal Challengers Bengaluru finally ended their 17-year wait for a maiden title shows just how tough it is to win the Indian Premier League (IPL), Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting had said after the final in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. Kohli's eyes began to tear up in the final over of PBKS' chase of the 191-run target set by RCB at the Narendra Modi Stadium, and the batting star dropped to his knees once Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood bowled out the final delivery to seal a six-run victory for his team. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The 36-year-old, after all, has played every IPL season since the league's inception in 2008 and has remained loyal to RCB throughout, and it wasn't until Tuesday that he finally got to lay his hands on the glittering trophy. Ponting mentions and CSK and MI while discussing Kohli's emotional celebration 'You can see in his eyes in that last over, he was shedding a tear, that's what it means to players, that's what it means to everyone,' Ponting had told reporters after the final, in which Kohli had scored 43 to finish the season as the third-highest run-scorer with 657 runs. 'Chennai (Super Kings) have won it a few times, Mumbai (Indians) have won it a few times, but it's not an easy tournament to win — it is as simple as that — and you have to think long and hard about that. It's not easy to win this thing,' Punter added. Like RCB, PBKS too had never lifted the trophy despite being part of the IPL since its inception, and had only reached the final just once – in 2014. The arrival of coach Ponting and captain Shreyas Iyer, who had led Kolkata Knight Riders to their third title last year, however, transformed PBKS' fortunes completely with IPL's 'perennial underachievers' reaching the playoffs for the first time in 11 years after finishing top of the table. Iyer and Ponting had previously formed a successful captain-coach pairing at Delhi Capitals, having helped the franchise reach the playoffs after a gap of seven years in 2019 and make their only appearance in an IPL final the following year. Star player opens up about not returning to IPL 2025 after India-Pakistan tension suspended league, says 'time will tell…'
Mitchell Starc of Delhi Capitals refused to return to India when IPL 2025 resumed last month. (Photo: ANI) Delhi Capitals team suffered a big blow immediately after the IPL 2025 was suspended for week when star pace bowler Mitchell Starc took the decision not to return to India. The T20 league was suspended for a week amid India-Pakistan tension after India's 'Operation Sindoor' in response to Pahalgam terrorist attack. Starc was stuck in Dharamsala when the IPL 2025 match between DC and Punjab Kings had to be suspended due to 'blackout' in the city and nearby areas after Pakistan's drone attacks in the aftermath of 'Operation Sindoor'. The Australian left-arm pacer was an essential member of Axar Patel's DC, claiming 14 wickets in 11 matches in IPL 2025 before the fateful night of May 8 when their match needed to be abandoned. All players were immediately evacuated out of the city and players from both sides had to return to Delhi in a specially arranged train as flight operations had been suspended in Dharamsala and all nearby airports. Starc's wife and Australia Women's captain Alyssa Healy was also attending the game when the game was stopped and the stadium was evacuated due to Dharamsala's proximity with the international border. The 35-year-old pacer said he had his doubts heading into that IPL 2025 game between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings given the tensions. 'I'm comfortable with my decision and how I felt about the whole situation and how it was handled,' Starc was quoted as saying by The Age. Mitchell Starc in the nets for Australia ahead of the WTC final — Cricketism (@MidnightMusinng) June 5, 2025 'That's why I made my decision post-that, and my focus changed to red-ball cricket for about a week prior to coming over here (the UK). 'Time will tell with repercussions or how it looks with guys that didn't return. But I've had my questions and concerns leading into that game, and obviously we saw what happened, which played a part in my decision,' he said. Starc revealed that due to similar reasons he had decided not to travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 with the Australian team earlier this year as well. 'There was a little bit of that to my decision around the Champions Trophy (in Pakistan) and then once the tournament (IPL) was delayed, you start to think about guys' preparation for the Test match,' he said, referring to Australia's World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa to be played at Lord's from June 11. Starc said things were 'handled differently for different players and different teams' in Dharamsala. Both the teams along with broadcast crew had returned to Delhi from Pathankot in a special train. 'Things were handled differently for different players and different teams, the guys up in Dharamsala, the Punjab guys were part of that, and while both teams had similar experiences up there, all those guys returned for Punjab, and Jake (Fraser-McGurk) and I chose not to,' he said. 'It was a very individual decision, and I'm happy to live with whatever comes of that. 'I'm still heavily committed to the Delhi group, and I'm not someone that's gone into tournaments and pulled out after being picked up in an auction or whatever that looks like. These are different circumstances,' Starc said. Starc, who was the most expensive player in IPL 2024 season, had been bought for Rs 11.75 crore by Delhi Capitals at the IPL 2025 mega auction.

IND A vs ENG Lions Live Score, 2nd Unofficial Test: Rain halts play in Northampton after India A lose Abhimanyu Easwaran and Yashasvi Jaiswal early vs England Lions
India A vs England Lions Live Score, 2nd Unofficial Test: KL Rahul will turn out for India 'A' in their second red-ball gam... Read More India A vs England Lions Live Score, 2nd Unofficial Test: KL Rahul will turn out for India 'A' in their second red-ball game against England Lions, starting in Northampton on June 6. KL Rahul had travelled to England ahead of the main Indian squad to acclimatise to the conditions before the five-Test series. KL Rahul had requested the BCCI to allow him to participate in the second India A game against England Lions. It's not the first time that Rahul, now the side's senior most batter with 58 caps, after the retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, will be turning out for India 'A' ahead of an important overseas Test tour. Last year, shortly after India lost the third Test to New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and suffered an unprecedented 3-0 series defeat at home, Rahul and wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel flew to Melbourne to turn out for India 'A' in their red-ball game against Australia 'A' at the MCG ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. With Rahul having scored two centuries as an opener on Test tours of England, his experience at the top will be very vital for India to navigate the challenge of facing the moving ball in the initial stage of an innings and then set a total to challenge the ultra-attacking batting style of the Ben Stokes-led side.
