Delhi Capitals team suffered a big blow immediately after the IPL 2025 was suspended for week when star pace bowler Mitchell Starc took the decision not to return to India. The T20 league was suspended for a week amid India-Pakistan tension after India's 'Operation Sindoor' in response to Pahalgam terrorist attack.
Starc was stuck in Dharamsala when the IPL 2025 match between DC and Punjab Kings had to be suspended due to 'blackout' in the city and nearby areas after Pakistan's drone attacks in the aftermath of 'Operation Sindoor'.
The Australian left-arm pacer was an essential member of Axar Patel's DC, claiming 14 wickets in 11 matches in IPL 2025 before the fateful night of May 8 when their match needed to be abandoned. All players were immediately evacuated out of the city and players from both sides had to return to Delhi in a specially arranged train as flight operations had been suspended in Dharamsala and all nearby airports.
Starc's wife and Australia Women's captain Alyssa Healy was also attending the game when the game was stopped and the stadium was evacuated due to Dharamsala's proximity with the international border. The 35-year-old pacer said he had his doubts heading into that IPL 2025 game between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings given the tensions.
'I'm comfortable with my decision and how I felt about the whole situation and how it was handled,' Starc was quoted as saying by The Age.

'That's why I made my decision post-that, and my focus changed to red-ball cricket for about a week prior to coming over here (the UK).
'Time will tell with repercussions or how it looks with guys that didn't return. But I've had my questions and concerns leading into that game, and obviously we saw what happened, which played a part in my decision,' he said.
Starc revealed that due to similar reasons he had decided not to travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 with the Australian team earlier this year as well.
'There was a little bit of that to my decision around the Champions Trophy (in Pakistan) and then once the tournament (IPL) was delayed, you start to think about guys' preparation for the Test match,' he said, referring to Australia's World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa to be played at Lord's from June 11.
Starc said things were 'handled differently for different players and different teams' in Dharamsala. Both the teams along with broadcast crew had returned to Delhi from Pathankot in a special train.
'Things were handled differently for different players and different teams, the guys up in Dharamsala, the Punjab guys were part of that, and while both teams had similar experiences up there, all those guys returned for Punjab, and Jake (Fraser-McGurk) and I chose not to,' he said. 'It was a very individual decision, and I'm happy to live with whatever comes of that.
'I'm still heavily committed to the Delhi group, and I'm not someone that's gone into tournaments and pulled out after being picked up in an auction or whatever that looks like. These are different circumstances,' Starc said.
Starc, who was the most expensive player in IPL 2024 season, had been bought for Rs 11.75 crore by Delhi Capitals at the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Sunil Gavaskar slams uncapped IPL crorepatis, wants BCCI to reward Ranji players better

Sunil Gavaskar has slammed IPL 2025's uncapped crorepatis who only turn up to play league cricket. He urged the BCCI to introduce slab-based Ranji Trophy payments and incentives to stop players from skipping domestic cricket before IPL. read more Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has shared his strong opinions about how some uncapped players in the Indian Premier League (IPL) are getting crores of rupees without proving themselves at the international stage. In his column for Sportstar, Gavaskar said that it is not always talent that helps these players earn big IPL contracts, adding that it's mostly just luck. Gavaskar slams uncapped IPL crorepatis Sunil Gavaskar did not mention any player by name but some of the young, uncapped crorepatis in IPL 2025 were Priyansh Arya (PBKS), Vaibhav Suryavanshi (RR), Nehal Wadhera (PBKS), Rasikh Dar (RCB), Naman Dhir (MI), Abdul Samad (LSG), Ashutosh Sharma (DC), Anshul Kamboj (CSK), Abhinav Manohar (SRH), Mahipal Lomror (GT), Arshad Khan (GT), Gurnoor Singh Brar (GT), Angkrish Raghuvanshi (KKR), Vaibhav Arora (KKR), Vijaykumar Vyshak (PBKS), Yash Thakur (PBKS), Harpreet Brar (PBKS), Shivam Dubey (RR). 'The argument that it is market forces is not really valid, for more often than not, it is sheer good fortune as some franchises want to take a punt with young talent. Have a look at the uncapped crorepatis throughout the IPL, and you will find that very few have gone on to do big things for India. It's their good luck that has made them the crores that they actually don't deserve,' Gavaskar wrote. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Gavaskar also talked about how some domestic players avoid playing Ranji Trophy matches before the IPL, just to avoid getting injured. According to Gavaskar, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) must work to fix this issue by introducing a better payment system. 'The BCCI has increased match fees, which is good. But if they add a slab system where players who play more matches earn more, it will encourage them to play more Ranji games instead of skipping them,' Gavaskar said. Gavaskar also suggested that the BCCI should introduce better incentives for teams that make the knockout stage of the Ranji Trophy. According to Gavaskar, it will motivate players to play the crucial matches before the IPL. 'If BCCI increases match fees for teams that reach the knockout stages, that will be another great incentive. Players won't withdraw from the tournament fearing injury before the IPL. Money is not a problem for BCCI or its units, so I hope these ideas are considered before the next domestic season,' he added.

Thomas Bjorn-Darren Clarke duo lead at TPC Wisconsin

Thomas Bjorn and Darren Clarke combined to shoot a 12-under-par 59 Friday to grab the early advantage at the American Family Insurance Championship in Madison, Wis. Friday's four ball format, which takes the lower score of a pairing of two golfers on each hole, is predisposed to the proliferation of lower scores, and indeed, every coupling of golfers competing was under par on the day. Clarke, of Northern Ireland, and Bjorn, of Denmark, were a dynamic duo on the first day of the tournament's debut at TPC Wisconsin, with each accounting for seven birdies across 12 different holes. "Certainly for me knowing Thomas' game so well made it so much easier for me to go out there and free it up today," Clarke said. "I really enjoy playing with him because I know he's there if I mess up, and likewise I try to be there for him. We have, it's like a 'no sorry' policy. We're both trying as hard as we can and we both hit a lot of really good shots today and made the most of our opportunities." Each got on individual hot streaks, nabbing birdies on four straight holes. Overall, Clarke pocketed birdies on Nos. 2, 4-7, 9 and 14. Bjorn had birdies at Nos. 4-5, 11 and 15-18. "I think we were tactically very, very sound today and did the right things when we had to," Bjorn said. "When we had two balls in the fairway or two balls on the green, we could be aggressive and that's why we holed more putts than we probably normally would, and we could take on a little bit more flags." Seven duos are within four strokes of the leaders. The Australian twosome of Richard Green and Mark Hensby are two behind at 10-under 61, good for second place. Hensby had the rougher day of the two with a pair of bogeys, but six birdies by Green kept them in contention. "I think we just both really enjoy the golf course, and the conditions are beautiful," Green said. "It's a lot of fun to play and hit the right shots required on this golf course. I felt comfortable out there." Defending champion Ernie Els of South Africa and his partner Tim Herron are tied for third at 9 under alongside Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee and Australia's Brendan Jones. Tied for fifth at 8 under are Australians Cameron Percy and David Bransdon, fellow Australians Stuart Appleby and Michael Wright, South Korea's K.J. Choi and Japan's Hiroyuki Fujita and Americans Gene Sauers and Glen Day. Saturday will switch things up with a scramble format golfers choose the best lie of the two shoots they take from each location along the hole until the hole is completed before reverting to best ball format on championship Sunday. AB de Villiers

New Delhi [India], June 6 (ANI): Former dynamic star AB de Villiers is 'confident' about South Africa staging an 'upset' against the defending champions Australia in the World Test Championship final, scheduled to take place at the iconic Lord's on Wednesday. South Africa has breached the knockout stages of ICC events several times but couldn't get the job done once. Last year, the Proteas stood just inches from the T20 World Cup trophy, but a spirited bowling display from India left them bamboozled in Barbados and forced them to return empty-handed. With a glimmer of hope to end its trophy drought, South Africa will square off against a 'well-oiled' Australia for the WTC mace. While the Baggy Greens emerge as on-paper 'favourites', de Villiers is 'hopeful' that South Africa can steer past the finish line to get its hands on the coveted title. 'This is a massive moment for South African cricket--a final at Lord's. The entire nation will be behind our team, and hopefully, we can cross the line,' de Villiers said on Star Sports. 'I'm excited for the challenge. It's a well-balanced side, and I'm quietly confident we can upset Australia--I say 'upset' because they're clearly the favourites for this ICC World Test Championship Final,' he added. The 41-year-old hopes that despite the odds, South Africa, who march towards the final with players hungry to prove themselves, can pip the defending champions and said, 'Australia are a very experienced, well-oiled machine of a team. It won't be easy for South Africa. But I'm quietly confident because we're going there with many in-form players and big-hearted guys who have something to prove on this stage.' This year, various teams across the sporting world have achieved many firsts. In cricket, Royal Challengers Bengaluru finally tasted men's IPL success, beating Punjab Kings in the tournament final. In football, Paris Saint-Germain lifted their maiden UEFA Champions League earlier this month for the first time. South African top-order batter Aiden Markram sees it as an omen and said, '(There's) not much chat along those lines in terms of watching the other events, but hopefully that trend can continue. Obviously, we've been chasing it now for many years as a squad,' Markram told ICC. South Africa squad: Tony de Zorzi, Ryan Rickelton, Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma (c), David Bedingham, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne, Wiaan Mulder, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Dane Paterson, Keshav Maharaj, Senuran Muthusamy. Australia squad: Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Alex Carey, Josh Inglis, Cameron Green, Beau Webster, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Scott Boland, Nathan Lyon, Matt Kuhnemann. Travelling reserve: Brendan Doggett. (ANI)
