A total of 66 Naxalites, including 49 carrying a cumulative reward of Rs 2.27 crore, surrendered in five districts of Chhattisgarh's Bastar division on Thursday, police officials said.While 25 cadres surrendered in Bijapur, 15 laid down arms in Dantewada, 13 in Kanker, eight in Narayanpur and five in Sukma, they said, adding 27 were women.The ultras surrendered before senior police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF) and Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel citing disappointment with the hollow Maoist ideology, atrocities committed by Naxalites on innocent tribals and growing internal differences within the banned outfit, an official said."They also claimed to be impressed by 'Niyad Nellanar' (your good village) scheme of the state government, aimed at facilitating development works in remote villages, new surrender and rehabilitation policy of the state government and Poona Margham (Rehabilitation for Social Reintegration), a rehabilitation initiative launched by Bastar Range police," he added."Of the 25 who surrendered in Bijapur, 23 carried a collective bounty of Rs 1.15 crore. They include Ramanna Irpa (37), Odisha state committee member and special zonal committee member of Maoists who carried a reward of Rs 25 lakh, and his wife Rame Kalmu (30), a platoon party committee member (PPCM) who carried bounty of Rs 8 lakh," Bijapur Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Yadav said.Sukku Kalmu (38), Bablu Madvi (30), Kosi Madkam (28) and Reena Vanjam (28), who were active in crucial positions in different formations of Maoists among other surrendered cadres, carried bounty of Rs 8 lakh each, Yadav added.In Dantewada, five of the 15 surrendered cadres carried total reward of Rs 17 lakh, Dantewada Additional Superintendent of Police Udit Pushkar said.Budhram alias Lalu Kuhram, a divisional committee member, his wife Kamli alias Moti Potawi, carrying rewards of Rs 8 lakh and Rs 5 lakh, respectively, are among the 15 surrendered ultras, the additional SP said.With this surrender, 1020 Naxalites, including 254 carrying rewards, have so far quit violence in the district under the 'Lon Varratu' (term coined in local Gondi dialect which means return to your home/village) campaign launched in June 2020, he said.In Kanker, the 13 surrendered Naxalites carried a collective bounty of Rs 62 lakh. Superintendent of Police Indira Kalyan Elesela said.The eight who laid down arms in Narayanpur had total reward of Rs 33 lakh on their heads, local SP Robinson Guria said."Of these, Vatti Ganga alias Mukesh (44), the Maoists' north bureau technical team in charge, carried a reward of Rs 8 lakh on his head," Guria said.The surrendered Naxalites were provided assistance of Rs 50,000 each and will be further rehabilitated as per the state government's policy, these officials said.

Lakhimpur Kheri violence: SC questions UP Police inaction on witness' complaint of threat, bribe
The Supreme Court on Thursday questioned the Uttar Pradesh Police for not acting on a witness' complaint that he was threatened with 'dire consequences' and offered a bribe not to testify in the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence case involving former Union minister Ajay Mishra's son Ashish Mishra, Live Law reported. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant, Ujjal Bhuyan and N Kotiswar Singh directed the police to verify the allegations. On June 20, Baljinder Singh filed a written complaint alleging that an unidentified person offered him Rs 1 lakh and threatened him with consequences if he testified in the case, Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the complainant, told the court. Bhushan added that despite the written complaint, no first information report had been registered, Live Law reported. The Uttar Pradesh Police reportedly claimed that Singh had not appeared in person, which is why the FIR was not filed. The court said this explanation was unsatisfactory. 'In case the complainant has been reluctant in coming forward in support of his complaint, some senior police officer can be deputed to visit the complainant…to verify if complaint has been made by him,' Live Law quoted the bench as saying. 'If such contents are acknowledged it is imperative for police to investigate.' The court also directed the senior superintendent of police in Lucknow to verify the complaint and file an affidavit along with a fresh status report. The case pertains to the death of eight persons, including four farmers, on October 3, 2021, as violence had broken out after a vehicle belonging to Ashish Mishra had allegedly run over a group of demonstrators. The violence had taken place in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh during a protest against the Union government's farm laws that were later repealed. During the hearing on Thursday, Bhushan also said that if Singh's allegations were found to be credible, Ashish Mishra's bail would have to be cancelled. He was granted bail by the Supreme Court in July 2024. Ashish Mishra's counsel opposed this, claiming the allegations lacked evidence. He told the court that 20 witnesses had already been examined by the trial court, while another 20 had been dropped by the prosecution. He also claimed that although the trial court was hearing the case thrice a month, 'nobody turns up'. While Bhushan requested a day-to-day hearing, the bench declined, saying it could impact other pending cases.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) chief also questioned Modi after his "farmers are top priority" remark amid a 25% additional tariff on Indian goods by the US. Thackeray alleged that the Centre did not care about farmers during the 2020-21 protests against the Centre's now-repealed three farm laws. Recalling the farmers' protest, Thackeray said the protestors were stopped from entering the national capital, and some even died. "The farmers who wanted to come to Delhi were stopped. Some of the poor farmers died. You did not remember the farmers then. Now you are remembering the farmers," the Shiv Sena (UBT) chief told reporters. He alleged that the government's "lies" are being exposed now. Thackeray said, "Now everyone says 'I am a farmer's son'. This means their fathers were on a hunger strike, and they were not allowed to come to Delhi. Guns were used on them. Walls were erected, and they were called Naxalites. All their lies are slowly getting exposed, day by day, and their real face is coming out." Thackeray's remarks came in the wake of Trump on Wednesday slapping an additional 25 per cent tariff, raising the total duties to 50 per cent on goods coming from India, as a penalty for New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil. Uddhav Thackeray attacks Centre "Today, the prime minister, home minister, and defence minister function more as propaganda ministers for the BJP. Had Modi been the nation's prime minister, he would have visited Pahalgam, but he chose to visit Bihar," news agency ANI quoted Thackeray as saying. He said the Shiv Sena-UBT was committed to the opposition INDIA bloc grouping and dismissed suggestions that his party would go it alone after reuniting with his cousin Raj Thackeray, the founder of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). "There is no need to talk about Raj Thackeray. There are no conditions attached for being part of the opposition INDIA bloc. As far as Raj is concerned, we two brothers are steadfast in our approach. We both will take care of it," Thackeray said. The Shiv Sena-UBT supremo is in the national capital to participate in the meeting of the opposition INDIA bloc convened by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. This is the first in-person meeting of the opposition alliance since its defeat in the Lok Sabha elections last year.
