Bhubaneswar, June 27 (IANS) A large crowd of devotees has gathered at Puri's Jagannath Temple for Lord Jagannath's Rath Yatra that will commence on Friday. Jagannath Rath Yatra, also known as the Chariot Festival or Shree Gundicha Yatra, is a major Hindu festival celebrated annually in Odisha.
One of the most revered and spectacular festivals in India, the Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra is celebrated with much joy and grandeur by devotees every year. The festival, which is rooted in deep spiritual tradition and centuries-old rituals, is celebrated in Puri, Odisha and it attracts hundreds of devotees from across the world.
The Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra, as the name suggests, marks the symbolic journey of Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra, from the main temple to the Gundicha Temple, which is their aunt's abode, in beautifully decorated, massive wooden chariots.
The Rath Yatra is not just a religious procession— it is a celebration of devotion, unity bringing devotees from across the world together, and a spiritual liberation.
It reflects the core Hindu belief that the divine resides among the people and journeys with them. The opportunity to pull the ropes of the Rath or chariots is considered a deeply auspicious act that washes away people's sins and brings the God's blessings.
Every detail of the event— from the creation of the chariots to the beating of drums and chanting of mantras— adds to its spiritual energy and grandeur, which is awe-inspiring.

‘Fall to death': Video of Harihar fort over-congested with tourists goes viral; netizens warn of ‘suicide trap'
Image: X/@WokePandemic A video capturing a massive crowd on a weekend trek to Harihar Fort, considered one of India's most dangerous hiking trails, has gone viral on social media, sparking discussions over safety and regulation. The Harihar fort is located in the Nashik district of Maharashtra and is known for its unique rock-cut staircase and steep steps that ultimately lead to the summit. Even with the risk involved, the video captured hundreds of people on the trek, with some even clinging onto rocks, in a tightly packed trail leading to the fort. People were seen sitting on the edge, risking a fatal fall. Harihar fort is built on a rock shaped like a triangular prism. Two of its edges and all three sides are straight up at 90 degrees, while the third edge on the west slopes at a steep 75-degree angle. A very narrow, one-meter-wide staircase is carved into the rock with 117 steps in total. 'Another major incident waiting to happen..? Harihar Fort weekend crowd surge is death trap!! This needs to be stopped/moderated else. One minor stampede or someone loosing balance and it will have cascading effect and hundreds will fall to there death.', by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Livguard Lithium-X: The Future of Power Backup Livguard Learn More Undo the post on X said. The video has garnered over 900,000 views, with netizens voicing out their concerns over safety and regulations in place about such a congested trekking trail. A user commented 'Are people mad or what! Why do they have to visit such crowded places? This is a disaster waiting to happen. And administration should restrict the number of people that can visit the first at one time'. 'That is madness without proper regulation or order in such places. Adventure without safety provisions are suicide trap nothing else', said another use. Questioning how the situation came to be like this, another user commented 'Forest department Nasik controls it, it charges fees. It was decided that only 300 tourists per day will be allowed, not followed by them. Now I after seeing this video last week, they have curtailed tourists. Don't know what action is taken on errant officials'. The situation has reignited a debate on how India is equipped to deal with an ever-increasing tourist footfall with the shadow of the deadly Bangalore stampede that claimed 11 lives and injured over 30 others, still fresh in the public memory.

Secrets Of Jagannath Temple: Story Behind The Mysterious Third Step
New Delhi: The Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath began in Odisha's Puri today. Lakhs of devotees from across the world have gathered to witness the grand procession of the three divine siblings, Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra. This revered annual event is held during Ashadh Shukla Paksha in the Hindu calendar month Asadh. The historic Jagannath Temple in Puri, one of the Char Dhams of Hinduism, holds within its sacred precincts several mystical traditions and ancient secrets, one of the most intriguing being that of the third step at the temple's entrance, known as 'Yamashila' or 'Yama's stone'. The Mystery Of The Third Step To enter the Jagannath Temple, one must ascend 22 stairs, each considered sacred. The third step from the bottom holds special, and somewhat ominous, significance. Known as Yamashila, this step, in religious lore, is believed to be the abode of Yamraj, the Hindu god of death. According to a popular legend, Yamraj once visited Lord Jagannath, troubled by the fact that no souls were coming to his domain. Only seeing Lord Jagannath was believed to grant salvation to devotees, allowing them to skip the journey to Yamlok (the land of the dead). According to mythology, upon hearing this, Lord Jagannath directed Yamraj to reside on the third step of the temple's entrance, declaring, "He who steps on this stair after seeing me shall be freed of sins, but shall come to your abode." Since then, this step has been known as Yamashila, and devotees consciously avoid stepping on it, especially after the darshan (sacred viewing) of Lord Jagannath. Many even touch the step with reverence and pass over it, ensuring their feet don't land directly on it. How To Identify The Yamashila Step The temple authorities have made it easier for devotees to observe this tradition. The Yamashila step is distinctly coloured black, unlike the other 21 steps.
