OFW miscarries on Jeju Air flight
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) will be providing full assistance to an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who suffered a miscarriage during a flight to Incheon, South Korea.
According to a statement from the DMW, the incident has been confirmed as an "in-flight miscarriage on Jeju Air" through coordination with the Philippine Embassy in Seoul.
The woman was traveling with her husband, her mother-in-law, and her daughter from Clark International Airport to Saipan, with the flight making a layover at Incheon International Airport.
Upon arrival in Incheon, a 911 rescue team immediately brought the OFW to INHA University Hospital in Incheon but the baby was declared dead on arrival.
DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac said the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Seoul has already reached out to the woman, who is now reported to be in stable physical condition.
The DMW is assisting the OFW with her hospital bills and providing other necessary medical support. The department is also coordinating with Incheon police for the autopsy and will arrange the immediate repatriation of the baby's remains. — Jiselle Anne C. Casucian/BM, GMA Integrated News

Amid a staggering 500% increase in HIV cases among young Filipinos, the United Nations has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Philippine government in addressing what is now being considered a national public health emergency. 'The resources from the international community are limited, but we have been accessing the Global Fund for the Philippines for a few years,' he said. As the country approaches the mid-term review of its national development plans, Peral stressed the importance of reassessing current strategies. 'The scale of the challenge is also challenging us—to unpack what it means and establish a proper strategy to address it,' he explained. He confirmed that HIV will be a key priority moving forward, with updated data and strategies to be reflected in the upcoming Voluntary National Review (VNR) on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 'We will be looking at the latest numbers. That will be published pretty soon in the VNR,' Peral said. 'And definitely on HIV, it's going to be a priority.' The Department of Health has already called on President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. to declare a national public health emergency, citing the Philippines as having the highest number of new HIV cases in the Western Pacific region. As the crisis deepens, Peral emphasized the need for a united response: 'We are now reviewing how we can support this strategy and national emergency. LRT-1 to give free rides on Independence Day
Passengers of Light Rail Transit 1 (LRT-1) will get free rides on June 12 in celebration of the 127th Independence Day. In a statement, LRT-1 said the free rides will be available from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in all of its stations. It added that LRT-1 will still have a regular operating schedule on June 12. The first train from Dr. Santos and Fernando Poe Jr. Stations will leave at 5 a.m. The last trip from Dr. Santos Station will be at 9:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. from Fernando Poe Jr. Station. Earlier, MRT-3 and LRT-2 announced that they will also offer free rides on June 12 during the same timeframe. DepEd revises policy, widens entry age for Kindergartens
The new policy states that children who turn five years old on or before October 31 of the school year, from the current August cutoff, may now enroll in Kindergarten. The Department of Education (DepEd) has revised the age cut-off policy for admission, which will expand the window for learners turning five years old. Due to this, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara said more Filipino children would be eligible for Kindergarten. The new policy will take effect this School Year 2025-2026. 'This policy is rooted in our understanding that every child grows and learns at their own pace,' Angara said in a press release on Thursday. 'By allowing more flexibility in the Kindergarten age requirement, we are making sure that each learner has the opportunity to start strong and succeed from day one.' The new policy states that children who turn five years old on or before October 31 of the school year may now enroll in Kindergarten. This extends the previous cut-off date of August 31, which eases restrictions for families with children born later in the year. The policy also allows conditional admission for children turning five between November 1 and December 31, provided that they complete a one-year Early Childhood Development (ECD) program from a recognized center or pass an ECD readiness checklist during enrollment. The DepEd said private schools are covered by the directive but may implement additional readiness assessments as part of their screening process. In 2024, more than 1.8 million Kindergarten learners were enrolled across the country out of 26.4 million learners nationwide.
