WARREN, Ohio (MyValleyTributes) – Martha M. James, a cherished matriarch and beacon of love, has been called home to the Lord on Monday, May 12, 2025, at the age of 93.
Born on July 31, 1931, in Warren, Ohio, Martha's journey began as a bright light in this world, and she continued to shine her warmth upon us until her peaceful passing in Columbiana, Ohio.

Martha, known fondly by her given name, was the loving wife of Ronald A. James, Sr., (of whom she was married for 71 years) and the proud mother to her children. Though she endured the heart-wrenching loss of her son, Ronald A. James, Jr., she remained a steadfast pillar for her surviving sons, Leonard, Robin, Clifford and Troy and her daughter, Lisa Lee. She had 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She was also a great-great-grandmother. Her life was a testament to the enduring strength of a woman's love and the unbreakable bonds of family.
Martha chose the path of a homemaker, a role she filled with grace and dedication. Her home was a haven of comfort and joy and she poured her soul into nurturing her family, creating a legacy of warmth and hospitality that would resonate through generations.
Martha's passions were simple yet profound. Her love for Gospel music was as deep as her faith and she found solace and joy in the harmonies that spoke to her spirit. She also enjoyed reading and travel.
She was a virtuous woman and her children rise up and call her blessed, her husband loved her dearly.
As we gather to honor the life of Martha M. James, let us remember the echoes of her laughter, the wisdom of her words and the unconditional love she bestowed upon her family.
We bid farewell to Martha, not with sorrow but with the joy of knowing she has entered the Lord's embrace. Her journey on this earth may have ended but her story continues in the hearts of those who loved her. She has run the race, she has kept the faith and now she has received the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, has bestowed upon her on this day.
Martha M. James leaves behind a legacy of love, a family strengthened by her presence and a world made brighter by her spirit. Though she will be deeply missed, we take solace in the knowledge that she rests in eternal peace, watching over us with the same tender care she showed every day of her blessed life.
Let us carry Martha's memory forward with joy, knowing that one day, we shall all be reunited in the house of the Lord, where the melodies of Gospel music she so adored will forever play. Until then, we hold her in our hearts, a cherished memory, a guiding light and a beloved soul who graced us with her presence.

Flags half-staff to honor Massachusetts airman killed during World War II
BOSTON (WWLP) – Governor Maura Healey has ordered all U.S. and Massachusetts flags to be lowered to half-staff on Saturday. The order was issued to honor Staff Sergeant Loring E. Lord of Somerville, who served in the U.S. Army Air Forces 642d Bombardment Squadron, 409th Bombardment Group, 9th Bombardment Division, 9th Air Force, during World War II. Lord was a gunner aboard an A-26B 'Invader', when his aircraft was hit by heavy anti-aircraft fire during a bombardment mission to Germany in March 1945. WWII bomber crash left 11 dead and 'non-recoverable.' 4 are finally coming home Those aboard the aircraft were buried in a cemetery in Germany. The remains were later discovered in 2018 and taken to a laboratory for analysis and identification. Lord's remains were identified in September 2024, according to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. Loring was born in Somerville in 1916 and enlisted in the Army Air Forces during World War II. His remains were returned to Massachusetts on May 29th. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett. American flags and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts flags are ordered to be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Saturday in his honor. 104-year-old Ohio World War II veteran remembers the beaches of Normandy
The Enquirer revisited Army veteran Richard Stewart as we mark the 81st anniversary of D-Day. We spoke with Stewart in 2023, as he revisited the beaches of Normandy and remembered the battle against the German army that was a turning point in World War II, the Battle of Normandy. This year, photographer Liz Dufour checked in with Stewart ahead of the D-Day anniversary. He returned to Normandy in 2024 to accept the French Legion of Honour from France's President Emmanuel Macron during the U.S. ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the World War II "D-Day" in Normandy. Stewart, a Lincoln Heights resident, is now 104. He remembers working in the field, inspecting a line when a bomb hit. 'The earth shook, as if an earthquake had hit us,' he told Dufour. During the war, the U.S. military segregated African Americans from their White counterparts, and they were assigned noncombat roles. 'They underestimated us,' he said. Stewart's unit served in France, Belgium and Germany until he was discharged Nov. 13, 1945. As he reflects on his wartime experience, he said, 'I'm so thankful.
