The TRNSMT star who cut her teeth busking in Glasgow
"It was in the middle of a forest and I lived there the whole time I was there, so it was like I was living in a fairy tale," laughs the Lanarkshire singer.
It is not the only fantastical moment in her career so far, as the 26-year-old has gone from busking on the streets of Glasgow to performing on Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage alongside ex-Beautiful South singer Paul Heaton.
The former Housemartins vocalist praised Downey on social media in 2020 after she covered his band's song Rotterdam - and three years later he asked if she would be willing to sing with him on tour.

Since then she has toured across the country with him while also working on her own music.
Her debut album is released in October, and before that she will perform at TRNSMT on Sunday afternoon.
"I still don't think it has sunk in, to be honest", admits the singer, who is from Bellshill.
"Sometimes I'll be walking down the shops or cooking my dinner, and it pops into my head what my job is now. It takes the breath away, it's such a dream come true.
"As a musician you dream of getting to do this for a living, but you never fully believe you're going to get there."
Downey started busking in her teens, was playing pubs as soon as she turned 18 and was quick to upload material to YouTube when the coronavirus pandemic struck in 2020.
"My mum always says I could sing before I could speak," she recalls.
"But none of my family are actually musical, other than my granny holding a tune. I don't really know where I got it from, but there was always music on around the house.
"It's always been the way I express myself. I just love performing, whether it was forcing my granny to watch me sing or being up on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury - I'm happy with whatever I can get."
That Glastonbury appearance came alongside Heaton, who approached her about joining him when his regular collaborator Jacqui Abbott had to step away from the band for health reasons.
"I feel very lucky to have met people like Paul and Ryan Hadlock (producer of her album), who are gems in the industry," Downey said.
"I'll always aim to be as kind and giving as they are, and hopefully as talented as they are too. Paul is an amazing role model and I couldn't ask for a better sort of mentor."
Her country and folk-flavoured pop will be fully heard in the autumn, when she releases The Consequence of Love, the record she decamped to Bear Creek Studio in the USA to work on.
Having spent most of 2024 touring with Paul Heaton and his band, both the album and this weekend's TRNSMT appearance will put her own material in the spotlight again.
"It's definitely a coming of age album," she says.
"It's the chance to tell where I came from and where I am now, as well as looking at friendships, relationships, my family and different things that happened on the way.
"I've kind of grown up in front of people and it's the truest, most authentic version of me that's there in the songs."
Downey believes that authentic nature comes from busking as a teenager - when she cut her teeth as a performer.
While she stresses that most of her experiences were positive, it also taught her a lot about performing and winning over crowds.
"That was me serving my apprenticeship," she said. "It's been great character building and it's given me such strength, because when you're stepping out onto the streets of Glasgow to busk there is no-one there to listen to you at first.
"It helped build a thick skin but it also taught me about what crowds like and helped me hone in on my performance."
Her busking years were before Glasgow City Council decided to implement a code for street performers that came into force last year.
Downey is uncertain whether the changes will actually make any difference.
She said: "There was always a sort of code anyway when I was doing it, so you knew to keep enough of a distance so everyone had a fair chance of being heard.
"It's always a bit mad putting rules in for music though, so hopefully buskers don't have to worry about volume too much."
Volume levels will be less of an issue at TRNSMT's King Tut's stage on Sunday.
Downey's headline tour in the autumn will then wrap up back in Glasgow, at the Old Fruitmarket. Her profile is continuing to rise, which Downey says brings both praise and attention and abuse from internet trolls.
"I still ruminate on negative comments but you realise a lot of the time it isn't personal," she says.
"It just comes with the territory – in a way it's like you're doing something right. It's a horrible thing to deal with but it's about turning that into a positive."
She has the same approach with her song-writing, which she says is a form of therapy for her.
"Sometimes you sit down with your guitar and feel you don't have anything to write about, then within a few hours you've vocalised an emotion you didn't realise was eating away at you," she says.
"Putting it out of your head and onto paper or into song can really take a load off, and it's so rewarding when people then respond to that and relate to it.
"It's like knowing you're not alone – that's the beauty of music."

Music therapy charity raises £14,000 at Kendal Calling Festival
A charity based in Penrith has raised £14,000 to support its music therapy work. Annie Mawson's Sunbeams Music Trust secured the donations during its first appearance at the Kendal Calling Music Festival, held at Lowther Deer Park. The trust delivers community music therapy to more than 2,000 disabled and disadvantaged children and adults each month. The charity said that the message at the heart of it's 33-year history, "bringing the power of music to Cumbria" was reaffirmed at the festival. The trust thanked the volunteers connected with the charity, saying these 'tremendous' funds could not have been raised without their "passion, enthusiasm, and incredible commitment.

Groundbreaking Latin jazz pianist-composer Eddie Palmieri, dead at 88
By Steve Gorman (Reuters) -Eddie Palmieri, a Grammy-celebrated pianist, composer and bandleader widely recognized as a leading figure in the Latin jazz and salsa music scene, died on Wednesday at his home in New Jersey, according to his Facebook page. He was 88. No cause of death was given. Born in the Spanish Harlem section of Upper Manhattan to Puerto Rican parents, Palmieri began studying piano as a youngster and made his musical debut performing at Carnegie Hall at age 11. Two years later, he grew fascinated with percussion and joined his uncle's Latin jazz orchestra on timbales at age 13, but soon switched again to piano and never looked back, according to a biography posted on Still, his early infatuation with percussion went on to inform his dazzling, thunderous piano style, and compositions that transcended the boundaries of Afro-Caribbean music, jazz, funk and soul. As described by AllMusic, his technique as a pianist incorporated bits and pieces from contemporaries ranging from McCoy Tyner to Herbie Hancock and recycled them through a dynamic, Latin groove. "His approach can be compared to Thelonious Monk's for its unorthodox patterns, odd rhythms, sometimes disjointed phrases and percussive effects played in a manner that is always successfully resolved," AllMusic wrote. In 1961, Palmieri founded the ensemble La Perfecta, redefining salsa by introducing trombones in place of trumpets for a deeper, heavier brass sound that became his signature. The band's self-titled debut album is universally regarded as a Latin music classic. His 1965 album "Azucar Pa' Ti" ("Sugar for You") became a dance-floor favorite and Palmieri's most successful release. It was added to the U.S. National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress in recognition of its cultural significance. Palmieri's 1971 album "Harlem River Drive", also the name of his second band, showcased a genre-crossing, politically charged collection of songs blending Latin jazz, funk and soul that is still considered a hallmark of musical activism. That same year, he also recorded the album "Vamanos Pa'l Monte" ("Let's Go to the Mountain"), featuring his older brother, Charlie Palmieri, playing organ. His elder sibling, known as the "Giant of the Keyboards," died in 1988. Other groundbreaking releases from among a body of work spanning seven decades include the albums "Justicia Sun of Latin Music" (1974) and "The Truth: La Verdad" (1987). Palmieri is the recipient of 10 Grammy Awards, the National Endowment of the Arts' Jazz Master Award and a lifetime achievement award from the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, among other accolades.

Why a Blaine man built a giant guitar visible from the sky in his backyard
In the land of Prince and Bob Dylan, there's a music tribute that you can see from the sky. On his five-acre property in Blaine, Minnesota, Erik Lund has plenty of space to fine-tune his golf game and his guitar game. "That one I bought out of California and that one is a 2550," said Lund. "Collector's edition gig." He's had a love for music his entire life. In the big hairband days of the 80's, Lund was a drummer and a lead singer for a band called Bad Credit which was a shout-out to their credit scores at the time. "Yeah, I was blessed with great hair. I bleached it white, and we rocked," said Lund. But his favorite guitar is one that doesn't make a sound. Wanting to pay tribute to rock 'n' rollers who inspired him, like Jimmy Page and Randy Rhoads, he got the idea to build a work of art in his backyard. "I just thought, I've always wanted to do something weird like that, and why not," said Lund. He used his Les Paul guitar as a template, laid out a design on his lawn, then dug it up and had concrete poured into the shape of his six-string. He added a metal fire pit where the guitar pick-ups would be. The concrete guitar is 22 feet wide and 72 feet long, making it easy to see from the sky. Especially with an airport just a few miles away. And that's noteworthy, because an aerial image of the guitar showed up on Zillow, and then on the Facebook page Quirky Minnesota. where it's gotten nearly 2,000 likes. People loved the mystery and mystique with some speculating that Bob Dylan lived there. "I made a couple of comments on there saying, oh yeah, it doesn't really belong to anybody famous," said Lund. "The neighbors don't even know it's here." He was never seeking attention for this. But if the view from up top gets people thinking about rock 'n' roll, then he knows he struck the right chords. "It is different and if somebody sees it they are going to go wow, that is different," said Lund. "It's just for the musicians. For the guys that spend all that time doing that. And the ones that are ultra-talented." Lund said he hopes to add more parts to the guitar in the future. He also wanted to thank Kurt's Construction for all the time they spent pouring concrete for his crazy idea.
