Auburn's Bruce Pearl named finalist for Naismith Coach of the Year award Auburn's head man has taken the program to new heights this season.
Bruce Pearl is ready to lead Auburn to its first NCAA Tournament national championship. However, he could end the season by hoisting more than one trophy.
Auburn's head man was recently named a finalist for the Naismith Men's Coach of the Year due to leading the program to new heights this season. He joins Duke's Jon Scheyer, St. John's Rick Pitino, and Houston's Kelvin Sampson on the shortlist for the prestigious award.
Pearl led the Tigers to its fourth-straight NCAA Tournament this season, its first-ever as the No. 1 overall seed. Pearl also set new records this season. He has led Auburn to six NCAA Tournament appearances since taking the job ahead of the 2014-15 season, the most by any Auburn head coach. He also became Auburn's all-time winningest head coach this season by winning his 214th game as the Tigers head coach in the Jan. 7 win at Texas this season to pass Joel Eaves on the all-time wins list.
Pearl joins Scheyer and Sampson as head coaches remaining in the NCAA Tournament. Auburn advanced to the Sweet 16 by defeating Creighton on Saturday, 82-70 behind strong performances from Chad Baker-Mazara and Tahaad Pettiford. The Tigers will meet Michigan on Friday in the Tigers' second Sweet 16 appearance under Pearl.
The winner of the Naismith Coach of the Year will be announced on Sunday, April 6. Fans can begin voting for Pearl on Tuesday, March 25, where fan voting will account for 5% of the total votes.

2025 ACC betting preview, odds: Predictions for tricky conference ahead of college football Week 0

The outlook for the ACC feels clearer than any of the other Power 4 conferences in 2025. The best team in the conference is obvious. The biggest story in the conference is obvious. You'd think that handicapping this conference would be rather straightforward, but the truth is that nothing is simple in the new era of college football. Yes, Clemson is deserving of its status as the runaway favorite in the ACC, but that doesn't mean that it's a foregone conclusion. At this time last year, Florida State was the favorite to top the conference and was a trendy pick to win the whole shabang. The Seminoles went 2-10 and finished last in the conference at 1-7. Clemson would eventually win the ACC, but the Tigers started the season with a 34-3 loss to Georgia; there weren't many folks backing them to be the last team standing after that performance. So while it may be tempting to plunk a chunk down on Clemson, it behooves you to take a hard look at some other teams. There will always be some lofty prices out there when there's such a firm favorite at the top of a volatile market. 2025 ACC Odds Team Odds Clemson +110 Miami +400 Louisville +750 SMU 10/1 Georgia Tech 14/1 Duke 25/1 Florida State 28/1 North Carolina 28/1 NC State 40/1 Pittsburgh 40/1 Virginia Tech 40/1 Syracuse 65/1 Boston College 75/1 Virginia 75/1 California 125/1 Wake Forest 400/1 Stanford 500/1 Odds via bet365 The Favorites Dabo Swinney has been unapologetic about how he's running the show at Clemson. Rather than raid the transfer portal each offseason, Swinney has remained steadfast in his belief that development and continuity are the best paths to success. His philosophy drew plenty of critics, but last year those skeptics began to quiet down as Clemson won the ACC Championship game and made it to the College Football Playoff. One year later, nobody is poking fun at Swinney or the Tigers. Clemson leads the country in returning production, and senior quarterback Cade Klubnik is one of the favorites to win the Heisman. 3 Cade Klubnik of the Clemson Tigers. AP Not only is Clemson the clear favorite to win the ACC, but the Tigers are also -200 to make the Playoff, trailing only Georgia, Ohio State, Texas and Penn State for the shortest odds to qualify for the dance. On paper, there's very little not to like about Clemson going into the new season, but the one concern I have is that the schedule is tougher than it may seem. Putting aside their Week 1 brouhaha with LSU and their traditional curtain-closer with South Carolina, the Tigers have tough ACC road tilts with Georgia Tech and Louisville, plus a visit to UNC to take on Bill Belichick. Clemson avoids Miami, but a three-game homestand against SMU, Duke and Florida State could be trickier than the odds will imply. You have to look pretty deep to find the landmines for this team, which is why they're such a clear favorite, but the number is just too short to be worth a bet given how volatile the ACC proved to be last year. Betting on College Football? You may think that if you're passing on Clemson, you should bet on Miami, but the truth is that I'd rather trust Swinney and the Tigers at a shorter price than Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes. Miami is the only team in the ACC with the talent to stand up to Clemson on paper, but Cristobal has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory so many times in his career that it's impossible to trust him. The Canes were 9-0 to start last year and looked like a shoo-in for the Playoff before losing to Georgia Tech and Syracuse at home in ugly, uninspired performances. Cristobal has to earn a lot more trust, especially now that he doesn't have Cam Ward to win him games on his own. 3 NC State's Dave Doeren is the second-most tenured coach in the ACC. AP Dark Horses SMU, Louisville and Georgia Tech are the projected gatecrashers, but none of them stand out as solid betting options in this market. Louisville's roster underwent a ton of change in the offseason, and the Cardinals have a tough conference schedule. SMU has a Heisman sleeper, Kevin Jennings, under center, but they lost a lot of playmakers from 2024 and too have a brutal schedule. Georgia Tech's resurgence is a wonderful story, and offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner could be the best in the country, but the narrative surrounding the Ramblin' Wreck has seeped into the market and taken all the value out of the Yellow Jackets. In fact, there isn't much of a difference between Georgia Tech and a couple of teams being offered at triple and quadruple the price. Long shots One of those teams, NC State, is coming into the season without any real fanfare after being a trendy pick to win the ACC in 2024. Last year, it was supposed to be the defense that drove the bus for the Wolfpack, but that unit was underwhelming, dooming NC State to a mediocre season. An improvement from the defense, and a step forward from exciting sophomore quarterback CJ Bailey, and NC State could outrun their odds against a very manageable schedule. The Wolfpack have a tricky stretch run against Georgia Tech, Miami, Florida State and UNC, but the first handful of ACC games are winnable and could put them in a terrific position to make a charge to the title game. NC State is a very tempting bet at 40/1 odds. The same can't be said of UNC. 3 Bill Belichick returns to coaching in Chapel Hill. AP While there is certainly a chance that Bill Belichick's genius translates to the college ranks, there are just too many unknowns for the Tar Heels to be worth a sprinkle at a similar or shorter price than Duke, NC State, Virginia Tech and/or Florida State. The one bet that could be a fun way to get involved with UNC is backing quarterback Gio Lopez to throw for the most passing yards in the conference. Lopez tossed for 2,559 yards at South Alabama last year and Belichick does have a reputation for getting the most out of his quarterbacks. I could also be talked into buying low on Florida State after a moribund 2024 campaign, but you can probably wait until after Week 1 against Alabama and get an even bigger number, assuming the Seminoles fall short. Best bets in the ACC NC State to win the ACC (50/1, BetMGM) Gio Lopez most passing yards in ACC (33/1, bet365) Why Trust New York Post Betting Michael Leboff is a long-suffering Islanders fan, but a long-profiting sports bettor with 10 years of experience in the gambling industry. He loves using game theory to help punters win bracket pools, find long shots, and learn how to beat the market in mainstream and niche sports.

MSU hoops' Tom Izzo feels he's 'adjusted to this new era' of college basketball

Tom Izzo: 'I've adjusted to this new era more than I think. Sure, there have been some rough spots. But players are the most important thing to me.' The college basketball world is ever changing, and Spartans head coach Tom Izzo believes he's adjusted more than many believe. Izzo was speaking at the Larry Shyatt's coaching clinic on Wednesday, where he addressed a number of items in the world of college basketball. One of which was the ever changing nature of the college basketball landscape and how he's been forced to change his philosophy on a number of things. Per a post on social media from college basketball insider and reporter Jeff Goodman, Izzo believes he has "adjusted" more than he thinks, and acknowledged that it wasn't always easy for him to make the necessary changes. 'I've adjusted to this new era more than I think," Izzo said during the coaching clinic. "Sure, there have been some rough spots. But players are the most important thing to me.' This past year's success on the court for the Spartans helps vindicate that statement from Izzo, with Michigan State claiming the Big Ten title by more than three games and reaching the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019. Hearing Izzo acknowledge that there have "been some rough spots" should also be promising for fans since it shows he isn't set in his old ways and is clearly adjusting to the new era of college basketball. Hugh Freeze praises Auburn RB Jeremiah Cobb: 'He's got a good football IQ'

Auburn football will be without 1,000-yard rusher Jarquez Hunter following his departure to the NFL. However, the Tigers will be far from shorthanded as a diverse group of running backs is set to emerge. This year's back group could be the deepest it has been in a few years, due to the many ways each player can attack opposing defenses. One of those players is junior Jeremiah Cobb, who received quite a bit of praise from his head coach this week. During his weekly press conference, Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze spoke on the versatility that Cobb brings to the offense and how it could lead to a monster season. 'I think he's going to have a breakout year," Freeze said of Cobb this week. "We went through three or four days last week when all our slot guys were down so we threw him back out there like we did last year some. He's got a good football IQ and has that capacity for us to use him in a lot of different ways, whether that's in the pass game. Now he's struggling a little in the pass game because he still has that brace on his thumb, and catching is not real natural, but I think he gets out of that first of next week. He's very versatile, we can use him in a lot of ways. I expect him to have a breakout year. He probably has the best burst in the open field of any that we have.' Cobb has shown flashes of versatility during his two previous seasons on the Plains in the run game, pass game, and return game. In two years, Cobb has built a stat line of 314 rushing yards and 92 receiving yards in a situational role, and 444 return yards, a skill he added to his belt last season. Freeze calls Cobb the "most experienced" back in Auburn's stable and says that he, as well as Damari Alston, has the best understanding of the offense, especially in the RPO game. How does Freeze view the other available backs? True freshman Omar Mabson and UConn transfer Durell Robinson are both climbing the ranks as well. "I'm excited about Omar (Mabson II), also, and Durell (Robinson)," Freeze said. "Alvin (Henderson) is going to be fine. He's been dinged up and hasn't been able to get many reps the last four or five practices, so hard to say much about that. But I think Damari and Cobb and Omar and Durell are all getting better every practice.' Depsite having great variety, Auburn's running back group will enter the season as the greatest question mark on offense. However, it appears that the mystery surrounding the group will disappear quickly. Auburn faces Baylor on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. CT in Waco, Texas.
