Liverpool star makes feelings clear over Florian Wirtz impact – 'Maybe too much'

Daily Mirror5 days ago
Liverpool splashed £116million to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer transfer window and the 22-year-old attacking midfielder is already making an impression
Florian Wirtz is so naturally gifted that his performances in training can be intimidating to his Liverpool team-mates, according to Milos Kerkez. Wirtz is the most expensive addition of an extremely busy summer transfer window for Liverpool and is already wowing his new employers.

Liverpool could end up smashing the British transfer record to sign Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee which would rise to £116million if certain add-ons are met. The Reds have splashed the cash this summer with their spending nearly reaching £300m, with full-backs Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong and striker Hugo Ekitike the other high-profile arrivals so far.

It has therefore been an exciting summer for the defending Premier League champions, who have seen Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Trent Alexander-Arnold leave. Having caught the eye in pre-season, Wirtz will begin the 2025/26 campaign in the Charity Shield against Crystal Palace on Sunday – and Kerkez has given fans a flavour of what to expect.

'I was never nervous about joining in,' Kerkez told the Daily Mail of Liverpool's training sessions. 'I was really happy to be here and I couldn't wait to get started.
'But it was just the intensity that was different. The quality is higher and there are not many mistakes. It's the noise of the passes. The ball goes boom, boom, boom... it's different.
'And he (Wirtz) is very talented. All the guys knew it and everyone watched him in the Bundesliga. He's a special player, really technically gifted. I haven't seen that (level of quality) too much, too often.
'He does special things often, maybe too much in a session! With the ball, what he does, you don't see that in too many players. It's how he carries it, the things he does in small spaces.
'If you give him one or two metres, he's going to get you. He's really special in tight spaces. Just the vision of the passes is special. He will be a great addition to this club.'

Wirtz contributed 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 appearances for Leverkusen and will have creative freedom in Arne Slot 's side. The 22-year-old is not daunted by the expectation on his shoulders. 'I came here to play my best football and because I thought I could fit into this team,' he said recently.
'I'm really enjoying my first few weeks. I'm enjoying playing with these players. It's getting a little bit better every time and I'm happy about how it's going.
'I think I'm a player who needs freedom on the pitch, and the manager gives it to me. Of course, I have to respect the position I'm in and the players around me, but I try to give my best on the pitch and find the right places, and I have the freedom for this here.
'I will try to find the right places to be, and the right spaces to get the ball and to be dangerous and create chances. I've not played a match in the Premier League yet but I am looking forward to it and that's why I came.'

Liverpool v Bournemouth: Premier League season opener

Update: Date: 2025-08-15T18:30:13.000Z Title: These two clubs are on the verge of doing some business with each other … Content: Premier League updates from 8pm BST at Anfield Match previews | Reds sign Leoni | Email Scott here Scott Murray Fri 15 Aug 2025 20.30 CEST First published on Fri 15 Aug 2025 19.30 CEST 8.30pm CEST 20:30 … but that's not the only news of Liverpool in the market today. 8.24pm CEST 20:24 Season previews. Time for one last look before the first ball is kicked in anger. 8.06pm CEST 20:06 Slot continues: 'We have lost many players and brought in many … even yesterday we brought in one who is not available yet … we have lost a few very good players … the ones we brought in are special as well … in general [in pre-season] we don't concede more chances, but the ones we do concede have led to goals.' Updated at 8.26pm CEST 8.00pm CEST 20:00 Arne Slot speaks to Sky Sports, and first addresses the impact on his squad of this tragic summer. 'The players are far better than I expected five or six weeks ago … in that moment in time, you feel will it ever be possible to play again? … but they have conducted themselves so, so, so well … on both sides they were great, as a human being, but they also understood they have to be professional football players again … so we had to work hard, and that's what we started doing.' Updated at 8.25pm CEST 7.54pm CEST 19:54 Liverpool name four Premier League debutants this evening. Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez all start, as they did at Wembley against Crystal Palace last weekend in the Community Shield. Bournemouth aren't far behind them in that regard. They've got three new players in their line-up tonight: goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović, left-back Adrien Truffert and central defender Bafodé Diakité all make their competitive debuts for the Cherries. 7.49pm CEST 19:49 Liverpool: Alisson, Frimpong, Konate, van Dijk, Kerkez, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo, Mamardashvili, Gomez, Endo, Chiesa, Jones, Elliott, Robertson, Nyoni, Ngumoha. Bournemouth: Petrovic, Smith, Diakite, Senesi, Truffert, Adams, Scott, Brooks, Tavernier, Semenyo, Dennis, Araujo, Soler, Junior Kroupi, Hill, Traore, Billing, Winterburn, Rees-Dottin. Referee: Anthony Taylor (Cheshire). Updated at 8.07pm CEST 7.45pm CEST 19:45 Diogo Jota is pictured on the cover of this evening's match programme. Arne Slot pays tribute to Liverpool's No20 and his brother André Silva in his notes, which confirm that Jota's wife Rute Cardoso, his children and family will be at Anfield this evening. There will be a moment of silence before kick-off, the players will wear black armbands, and Liverpool will wear a Forever 20 emblem on their shirts and jackets. We know that this will be a very emotional occasion, given it is the first league game we have played since we lost Diogo and André. As I have said previously, the tributes that have been paid throughout the football world, and especially within the LFC community, have been truly special, and I know that tonight we will come together to honour them once more. I believe that Diogo's wife, his children and his family will be in attendance and it is important that, as a club, we show that they will always have our love and support as they deal with this most tragic of situations. We are there for them always.' Updated at 7.45pm CEST 7.30pm CEST 19:30 Almost exactly one year ago – 363 days, to be precise – Liverpool found themselves struggling during their season opener at Portman Road. Newly promoted Ipswich Town had been the better team in the first half, and with nearly an hour on the clock, the score remained goalless. But then Trent Alexander-Arnold curled in from the right, finding his team-mate who ... ... flashed a header wide from six yards, when it was surely easier to score. Ah well. No matter, though! That team-mate, an indefatigable bundle of joyous energy, selfless commitment, Fowleresque skill, and straight-up fun, wasn't to be disheartened. He simply came at Ipswich again, 60 seconds later, entering the box to meet a Mohamed Salah pass by calmly and adroitly whipping a firm sidefoot into the corner. The first goal of the Arne Slot era, a crucial momentum-shifter, and the first step towards Premier League glory. Diogo Jota took Liverpool to victory. Better than Figo, don't you know? A year is a long time by any reasonable measure, but with another season opener upon us, all of that feels particularly distant now. Anfield, staging its first competitive fixture since the tragic passing of Diogo and his brother André Silva, will remember, grieve and celebrate those beautiful, beloved boys tonight with a special Kop mosaic in their honour. Then a game of football will take place. Kick-off will be at 8pm UK time, and Jota is forever Liverpool's number 20.

Why are all Premier League teams wearing black armbands this weekend?

EVERY Premier League team will be wearing black armbands in their opening match this weekend. All the clubs have come together in support, and will pay their respects with a moment of silence before kick-off. 2 Why are all Premier League teams wearing black armbands? Premier League teams across the country will be wearing black armbands on the opening weekend in tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre, who passed away earlier this summer. Jota's death shocked the football world, with tributes pouring in throughout pre-season. The Liverpool forward, who signed for the club from Wolves in 2020, died at the age of 28 in a car crash alongside his brother. At last Sunday's Community Shield, a heartfelt tribute was held in his memory. Liverpool legend Ian Rush, FA chair Debbie Hewitt, and Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish laid wreaths on the pitch in front of the Reds' supporters. As they did, fans joined together for an emotional rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone". A minute's silence was also observed before kick-off to honour Jota and his brother. Both Liverpool and Crystal Palace wore black armbands for the match in his memory - and they'll do so again this weekend alongside all of the other teams. 2 What Premier League matches are on this weekend? Man Utd files: Red Devils chiefs give up on Carlos Baleba transfer as all eyes turn to Viktor Gyokeres vs Benjamin Sesko

VIKTOR GYOKERES will be playing at Old Trafford on Sunday – and many expected it would be his permanent home this summer. Ever since Ruben Amorim's appointment was confirmed at Manchester United back in the autumn, the Swede was linked to the Red Devils. 8 8 And that only heated up as the Portuguese boss struggled to get goals from his team over the final months of last season. Amorim's admiration for his former Sporting Lisbon striker has always been clear – but United's interest in him never really got off the ground. Word came back early on that Gyokeres had set his heart on a move to Arsenal this summer so United switched their attention elsewhere. Amorim insists he is delighted to have landed Benjamin Sesko – who he believes will be United's main forward for many years to come. The United boss has had just five working days to bond with Sesko, who has only played against the under-21s in a United shirt, so a start against Arteta's Gunners might be too big an ask. But with Rasmus Hojlund on the verge of joining AC Milan on loan and Mason Mount playing as a false No9 last time out - Sesko might have to be deployed instantly. Opponents Arsenal tracked 6ft 5in Sesko for a very long time, a move seeming nailed on amid the Sporting-Gyokeres transfer saga. In the end, the North London club got Gyokeres over the line. The strikers offer a similar profile, with Arsenal's new star a more traditional, powerful target man, while Sesko combines physicality with greater mobility. The Sweden international has scored over 100 goals for club and country over the past two seasons - more than Sesko has yet managed in his career. Wayne Rooney reveals gang of masked thugs turned up at his home after row with Sir Alex Ferguson over Man Utd exit But he is 27. A signing for the here and the now who has already shown what he's capable of with a glancing header in Arsenal's rampant 3-0 pre-season win over Athletic Club. Sesko's goal output might not be as impressive as Gyokeres', but his 39 goals for RB Leipzig in all competitions over the past two seasons means he's Europe's highest goalscorer of players under 23 in that time. 8 CARL IT QUITS ANOTHER player who Amorim admires is Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba – who has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford over recent weeks. However there is an acceptance at United that the Cameroon will not be moving to them this summer. The asking price from the Seagulls is simply too hot for the Red Devils, who have splashed out more than £200million on their forward line this summer. Baleba is believed to fancy the move though – so watch this space in 12 months time. 8 SESK ON FIRE BENJAMIN SESKO'S agent has confirmed he held talks with several other clubs before sealing the dream switch to Manchester United. Newcastle's interest was well documented – while there were reports in Spain that Barcelona were keen on the £74million Slovenian. Now Elvis Basanovic – whose Pro Transfer Agency have guided him through out his career – has spoken about a hectic few weeks. But he admits all their efforts will be worthwhile when he sets foot on the Old Trafford turf for the first time this weekend. Basanovic said: 'It's been a tough summer. The story dragged on for a long time, including talks with other clubs. 'There was a lot of work, travel, stress and little sleep but in the end, it was worth it for something extraordinary. 'I couldn't wait to see Benjamin walk into the Theatre of Dreams.' The agent hopes Sesko's story will inspire other young players from their tiny nation to aim for the very top. He added: 'Benjamin proved that even from small Slovenia, you can achieve big things. 'I hope other young players there will dream big, work hard and realise amazing goals.' 8 SIGN OF THE TIMES RUBEN AMORIM'S new signings have captured the imagination of their supporters this summer. Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko hope to add the goals and a bit of excitement that were sadly lacking last year. Meanwhile popular club captain and talisman Bruno Fernandes has chosen to stay despite strong interest from Saudi Arabia in May. Yet club legend Rio Ferdinand revealed it was a different name that supporters wanted on their backs during the tour of North America this summer. Former skipper and centre back Harry Maguire was the most popular name – according to Rio, who interviewed the England defender this week. 8 THIS IS THE ONE UNITED are doing all they can to improve the atmosphere at the Theatre of Dreams this summer. Not surprisingly, given the lack of excitement and goals, things were a little flat for Prem games last season. Now The Red Army fan group have requested the music is turned off 15 minutes before kick off to allow supporters to crank up the noise. The same request has been made for the minutes after a home win – when regulars are currently treated to 'Glory Glory Man United'. The Old Trafford faithful have been given the chance to fill in a survey to make their feelings known on the matter ahead of the curtain raiser against Arsenal. Organisers have made it clear they still want two traditional pre-match favourites to remain – no matter what the outcome. 'Country Roads' by John Denver and Stone Roses Classic 'This is the One' will continue to be played no matter what is decided. 8 CASA AMOR STAFF who survived Sir Jim Ratcliffe's wave of redundancies were given metal WATER BOTTLES with the club's new motto sprayed across: 'BADGE, BRAVERY, SPIRIT' to take home with them this week. United's twist on Love Island bottles served as a reminder of chief executive Omar Berrada's newly set core values relayed during a big group meeting at Carrington on Monday. That meeting served as a chance for directors Jason Wilcox and Marc Armstrong, as well as Amorim, to give an overview of how the summer has gone. Wilcox, United's director of football, applauded latest signing Benjamin Sesko during his speech, praising 'Benji' for showing tremendous desire to join the club. He claimed the 22-year-old striker rejected further offers of a higher salary from fellow suitors Newcastle, even after he had agreed personal terms at Old Trafford - a point rejected by people at St James Park. On the topic of wanting United above all else, Amorim grabbed the opportunity to thank skipper Bruno Fernandes for returning down a 'big money move to Saudi Arabia'. This is the first time United have started a season with the manager and football structure both chosen by Ratcliffe's Ineos regime. 8
