Sunscreen may have kept ancient humans alive during a polar reversal

Despite the sunscreen misinformation you might see online, ancient humans did face problems from the sun's harmful rays. Ancient Homo sapiens about 40,000 years ago may have even benefited from some of the same technologies that we use to avoid sunburns today–mineral sunscreen, tailored clothes, and using caves for shade and shelter. These advances may have been particularly advantageous when Earth's magnetic poles switched a bit, according to a study published April 16 in the journal Science Advances.
Earth's magnetic field is created by its rotation, as well as the rotation of our planet's core. The core, which is made up of molten iron, generates electrical currents. These currents extend a sort of halo around the globe that helps protect Earth from cosmic radiation. This radiation thins Earth's ozone layer and lets in more ultra violet (UV) and the interaction of these particles with the Earth's magnetic field also results in aurora.
Currently, this magnetic field has a north and south orientation in the form of Earth's North and South poles. This is why you typically see auroras in regions close to the poles, where magnetic fields are the strongest.
Occasionally, these poles wander from their traditional geographic positions. These are called geomagnetic excursions. This natural process has occurred roughly 180 times over our planet's 4.5 billion-year geological history. Scientists believe that it is caused by some instability in the processes that generate Earth's magnetic field.
The most recent geomagnetic excursion is called the Laschamps excursion and occurred about 41 to 42,000 years ago, when the magnetic North Pole began to shift over Europe. During this reversal, the magnetic field weakened, causing aurora over most of the globe and allowed more harmful UV light to come in from space.

Around this same time, archeological evidence shows that Homo sapiens were likely making tailored clothing for themselves and using a pigment called ochre with greater frequency. Ochre itself has some sun-protective properties when applied to the skin and may have helped ancient humans spread throughout present-day Europe and Asia as the Neanderthal population was declining.
'In the study, we combined all of the regions where the magnetic field would not have been connected, allowing cosmic radiation, or any kind of energetic particles from the sun, to seep all the way in to the ground,' study co-author Agnit Mukhopadhyay, a space physicist at the University of Michigan, said in a statement. 'We found that many of those regions actually match pretty closely with early human activity from 41,000 years ago, specifically an increase in the use of caves and an increase in the use of prehistoric sunscreen.'
The team built models of the interaction of space particles and Earth's magnetic field using the Space Weather Modeling Framework. Mukhopadhyay developed a model that predicts how this plasma system will interact with Earth's magnetic field–ultmately forming an aurora.
Working with Sanja Panovska from Germany's GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, Mukhopadhyay created a 3D reconstruction of Earth's geospace system. They combined three separate models: a global model that reconstructs the geomagnetic field during the Laschamps excursion, one model of the space plasma environment around Earth, and another model that predicted what Earth's aurora looked like at the time. The resulting 3D model showed where charged particles were able to slip through Earth's geomagnetic field.
During the Laschamps excursion, Earth's magnetic field reduced in size to about 10 percent of its current strength. As a result, Earth's magnetic poles drooped down near the equator and the magnetic field lines expanded. This expansion meant the aurora could have been visible all over Europe and into northern Africa.

Homo sapiens and Neanderthals coexisted in Europe beginning roughly 56,000 years ago. However, Neanderthals were no longer identified as a species in Europe by about 40,000 years ago.
'What some of the differences are between these species, between Neanderthals and anatomically modern humans, that might account for that disappearance has been a major anthropological question for decades,' study co-author and University of Michigan anthropologist Raven Garvey, said in a statement.
Garvey suggests that clothing itself might have been a major difference between the species. The technological means of making clothing that fitted to the body have been discovered at archaeological sites associated with anatomically modern humans, but not necessarily sites where Neanderthals lived.
Archaeologists have found scrapers used in hide production, as well as needles and awls needed for sewing at sites associated with anatomically modern humans. According to Garvey, tailored clothing like this was significantly warmer. This added warmth meant that people could travel farther to find food and provided protection from sun damage, she said.

Because there are multiple detrimental effects of solar radiation, including potentially increased infant mortality, 'having protection against solar radiation would also have conferred significant advantage to anyone who possessed it,' Garvey said.
Additionally, ancient humans may have ramped up their use of ochre. This naturally occurring pigment is composed of iron oxide, clay, and silica and has been used by several species of hominins for thousands of years. People used it to paint objects, on cave walls and even to decorate their bodies.
'There have been some experimental tests that show it has sunscreen-like properties. It's a pretty effective sunscreen, and there are also ethnographic populations that have used it primarily for that purpose,' Garvey said. 'Its increased production and its association primarily with anatomically modern humans (during the Laschamps) is also suggestive of people's having used it for this purpose as well.'
According to the team, while these findings are not definitive, they offer a new way to look at already existing data.
'I think it's important to note that these findings are correlational and (ours is a) meta analysis, if you will,' Garvey said. 'But I think it is a fresh perspective on these data in light of the Laschamps excursion.'
The 3D model offers us a way to predict how future excursions might affect us. If a reversal like this were to occur today, we could see complete blackouts with communication satellites not working, telecommunications in disarray. These types of events have already happened, even during smaller space weather events.
This work also highlights that humans were still able to survive on a planet whose atmosphere looked a lot different than ours does today.
'Many people say that a planet cannot sustain life without a strong magnetic field,' Mukhopadhyay said. 'Looking at prehistoric Earth, and especially at events like this, helps us study exoplanetary physics from a very different vantage point. Life did exist back then. But it was a little bit different than it is today.'

Gaston Abea remembers his grandfather telling him that the gorillas living near their village in the northern Republic of the Congo were digging at the soil in search of tasty ants. Abea believed this explanation for the odd behavior—until he watched it closely himself and decided it didn't quite line up with the reason given by his grandfather or other members of his Indigenous Ba'Aka community. 'The gorillas were putting the leaves aside and really scratching the soil,' Abea says. 'That's not how you'd search for ants: you'd just pick them up.' Abea, now a Wildlife Conservation Society research assistant in Congo's Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park, was intensely curious about what the gorillas were actually up to. After several years of study, he and his colleagues revealed the answer in the journal Primates, offering a rare glimpse into gorilla diet and culture: the great apes were foraging for truffles. Other researchers had observed gorillas scratching at soil in a few places in Congo, Gabon and the Central African Republic, and they had also assumed it was an insect-foraging strategy. Abea and his colleagues cleared things up by following four groups of Ndoki gorillas for years, documenting their actions and collecting specimens of the small, round objects they saw the apes picking up and eating from the scratched earth. Taxonomic and molecular analysis revealed that the subterranean morsels were Elaphomyces labyrinthinus, a truffle species that looks like a smaller version of the kind humans eat. Not all the area's gorilla groups engaged in regular soil scratching, but all seemed capable of it. One individual doubled the time she spent consuming truffles after she switched from a group that rarely foraged for the fungi to one that frequently did. Such observations suggest that truffle-foraging strategies are flexible and might be socially transmitted rather than linked to some environmental factor. Culture is less well studied in gorillas than in other great apes. Primatologists have also traditionally written off gorilla feeding habits as less interesting than those of chimpanzees and orangutans, which have more varied diets and are avid tool users. The new paper adds evidence, however, that gorilla diets 'are remarkably diverse and that there may be cultural preferences for certain foods in certain social groups,' says Stacy Rosenbaum, a biological anthropologist at the University of Michigan, who was not involved in the new study. Scientists don't yet know why these difficult-to-find delicacies would be on a gorilla's menu. Some research suggests truffles might have antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, Rosenbaum says—so 'an intriguing, if speculative, possibility is that they might have medicinal benefits.' Or it could be that some gorillas, like some humans, simply find them delicious.

The latest Peregrine falcon chicks to hatch at the University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus have their official names. The two chicks – one female and one male – will be known as Victoria and Valiant, according to Monday's announcement. The chicks hatched in May from a nesting box on top of the North Quad. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources then worked with The University Record and the U-M community to help name the chicks. More than 1,400 suggestions were submitted online, including several suggestions for Victor or Victoria. There was also a noticeable trend in suggested names inspired by the 2016 film "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children." By tradition, the names given to Peregrine falcons hatched on campus have connections to the university or the Ann Arbor region. Peregrine falcons were nearly extinct, but last summer there were 30 nests confirmed across the state. The birds are now listed as threatened rather than endangered. Amid that repopulation, Peregrine falcons started to be noticed in southeast Michigan in the early 2000s, including a pair that decided to nest in Burton Tower. Since that turned out not to be an ideal spot for the falcons, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources created other nesting sites in the area. The one on North Quad is now the only nesting site on campus.

Wuhan scientist arrested for smuggling toxic parasites into US

A Chinese scientist has been charged with smuggling toxic parasites into the United States. Chengxuan Han, a doctoral student at a university in Wuhan, China, is accused of shipping four separate packages of 'concealed biological material' to individuals associated with the University of Michigan in 2024 and 2025, according to the US attorney's office. Han is the third Chinese national to be arrested for smuggling potentially hazardous material into the university in the last week. She was stopped on June 8 after landing in Detroit, where she was questioned by border patrol officers. She initially lied to the officers about the packages, claiming that they contained plastic cups instead of petri dishes, but eventually she admitted to making 'false statements' and said the packages contained 'biological material related to roundworms', according to the US attorney's office. Roundworms are a type of parasite that can cause a number of illnesses in humans, including diarrhoea and nerve problems. The border officers also found that the contents of her electronic devices had been deleted three days before she arrived in the country. 'The FBI has zero tolerance for those who violate federal law and remains unwavering in our mission to protect the American people,' said Cheyvoryea Gibson, a special agent in charge of the FBI Detroit field office. 'The alleged smuggling of biological materials by Chengxuan Han is a direct threat to public safety and national security, and it severely compromises the integrity of our nation's research institutions.' Han is just the latest Chinese scientist to be accused of serious crimes related to smuggling biological material. On June 3, Yunqing Jian, a scientist at the University of Michigan, and Zunyong Liu, her boyfriend, were both charged with smuggling a toxic fungus for potential agroterrorism uses into the US. The FBI found that both Jian and Liu had done previous work on the same pathogen in China, and Jian had received money directly from the Chinese government for this research. There is so far no indication that Han is connected to the couple, but the common destination of the material does raise questions about the university. While the university has a top life science program, it has also been at the centre of previous controversies involving China. In 2023, five Chinese nationals, who were all undergraduate students at the university, were arrested for allegedly spying on military equipment at Camp Grayling, the US military training centre. The students were part of a joint program with China's Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and following the incident, the University of Michigan announced that it would be ending the partnership. The five were not arrested for espionage but were charged with lying and attempting to cover their tracks. Camp Grayling, the largest National Guard training facility in the US, is one of a few places known to be training Taiwanese troops. China claims Taiwan as its own territory, which the government in Taipei rejects, and has threatened to invade the island on multiple occasions. It is unclear why Jian, Liu, and now Han selected the University of Michigan, but according to court documents, Han had reportedly tried to enter the US on two separate occasions before her arrest, and she was denied entry both times. It has been reported that Han was initially refused a visa to the US in March, largely because she struggled to conduct her interview in English. She was unable to answer basic questions about herself or her research field, the MailOnline reported . Han applied again two weeks later and during her second interview 'spoke credibly about her educational background, current studies, and postgraduate plans', the website claimed.
