JSP workers injured in alleged lathi charge as police stop march to CM Nitish's residence
JSP supporters who gathered there to take part in 'CM residence gherao' were stopped by police near Chitkohra Overbridge while they were heading towards the Gardanibagh dharna site.
Police had erected barricades the march, leading to a scuffle between personnel and JSP protestors. Videos of the clash quickly went viral on social media.
JSP later claimed that several of its supporters sustained injuries in the police action, alleging they were lathi-charged during the protest.
Prashant Kishor attacked the state government for using force against peaceful demonstration and attempt to suppress the voice of the people. 'We will not allow this to happen. We will fight against them,' he said.
The agitation was organised to protest, what Prashant Kishor called, 'three critical failure of the state government. Later addressing workers, Kishor raised three questions: Why have poor families not received the promised Rs.2 lakh employment aid? Why have Dalit families not been allotted three decimals of land? And why there is silence on alleged corruption in the ongoing land survey?
Prashant Kishor, who met the injured supporters shortly after the incident, slammed the state government, accusing it of suppressing genuine public concerns through police force. 'They (government) think that it will impact our fight for justice. But they are under the shadow of illusion. Our fight will continue till demands are met,' he asserted.
Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Patna, denied the lathicharge and said that the protestors were prevented from marching towards prohibited area. 'Holding agitation is completely banned in prohibited zone,' he told the media while defending police action.

Vasai-Virar land scam: ED searches 12 places, including residence of ex-civic commissioner Anil Pawar, a day after his transfer
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) Tuesday initiated searches at 12 places, including the residence and official premises of former Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) commissioner Anil Pawar, in connection with a money laundering probe into the unauthorised construction of 41 buildings on 60 acres of civic land reserved for sewage treatment and as dumping grounds. The agency's action came a day after Pawar, whose transfer order was issued around a week ago, handed over the charge on Monday and was accorded a farewell. ED sources said multiple places in Vasai Virar, Mumbai, and Nashik are being searched. This is the third round of searches conducted by the central agency in the VVMC region in nearly two months in connection with a money laundering probe into the illegal building construction case. Officers suspect that a well-organised syndicate is operating behind it. In the first round, the agency searched the premises of VVMC officials, builders and their associates. In the second round, which also covered some premises in Juhu (belonging to a known architect) and Kandivali areas of Mumbai, officers focused on the premises of liaison officers, architects, and middlemen who allegedly coordinated between builders and VVMC officials. Builders routed the bribe paid to VVMC officials through middlemen to regularise illegal constructions, agency sources said. Incriminating documents seized during the last two raids indicated gross forgery and fabrication of documents to bypass rules and regularise unauthorised projects. Certain architects and liaisoning officials are suspected to have played an important role, another ED source said. In May, the agency raided 13 locations in Nalasopara, Vasai, Virar and Hyderabad as well. It seized approximately Rs 8.6 crore in cash and Rs 23.25 crore worth of diamond-studded jewellery and bullion from the house of Y S Reddy, deputy director of town planning, VVMC. Large-scale scam suspected The central agency's money laundering investigation is based on multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) registered by the Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar police commissionerate against builders, local henchmen, and others for 'illegal construction of residential/commercial buildings on government and private land' in VVMC limits since 2009. ED suspects a large-scale scam involving illegal construction in the Vasai-Virar area and said the key perpetrators have been identified as Sitaram Gupta and Arun Gupta, among others. Further investigation is on. According to the agency, 41 illegal buildings were constructed on land reserved for 'sewage treatment plant' and 'dumping ground' as per the approved development plan of Vasai-Virar city. 'The accused builders deceived the public at large by constructing illegal buildings on such land and subsequently developers sell flats to people by fabricating approval documents,' the ED said. 'Even with prior knowledge that these buildings were unauthorised and would eventually be demolished, the developers misled the people by selling rooms in these buildings, thereby committing serious fraud.' The 41 buildings were demolished on February 20 this year following the Bombay High Court's order, which the Supreme Court upheld later. The action, however, left the residents of these buildings homeless.

Tamil Nadu: Dalit man killed by girlfriend's brother allegedly over inter-caste relationship
A 21-year-old man has been arrested for killing a 27-year-old Dalit software engineer in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli district, in what the police alleged to be a caste crime, The Indian Express reported on Tuesday. S Surjith, the accused, allegedly hacked Kavin Selva Ganesh to death on Sunday. Ganesh, who belonged to a Scheduled Caste community, was in a relationship with Surjith's sister, S Subhasini. Surjith surrendered to the police shortly after attacking Ganesh, according to The Indian Express. His parents, Saravanan and Krishnakumari, are police sub-inspectors. They were named as co-accused in the first information report and charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act. The parents have been accused of inciting the crime and making threats to Ganesh in the past. Ganesh, a resident of Arumugamangalam village in Thoothukudi district, worked at Tata Consultancy Services in Chennai. On Sunday, he had gone to meet Subhashini at a private clinic in Tirunelveli town, where she works as a consultant. Subhashini belongs to a Most Backward Class community. Surjith allegedly met Ganesh outside the clinic and told him to come along as his parents wanted to speak with him. Ganesh got on his two-wheeler and left for Astalakshmi Nagar, The Indian Express reported. A few hours later, his body was found about 200 metres from the clinic, the Hindustan Times reported. Police said Ganesh and Subhashini had known each other since childhood. They had faced growing hostility from Subhashini's family. Ganesh's family told police that they had received repeated threats from her parents, the Hindustan Times reported. Ganesh's family has refused to accept his body and is demanding legal action against Surjith's parents, who they allege were instrumental in the murder. 'They objected to the relationship from the beginning and repeatedly harassed my son,' The Indian Express quoted Ganesh's mother, S Tamizhselvi, as saying. 'Even now, they may use their positions to influence the case.'

Auto-rickshaw driver sentenced to 5-yr RI for brothers death after altercation
Last Updated: Thane, Jul 29 (PTI) A Thane court has sentenced an auto-rickshaw driver to five years' rigorous imprisonment after convicting him for culpable homicide not amounting to murder in connection with the death of his brother in 2021. Principal district and sessions court judge S B Agrawal also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the accused, Mahendra Sadashiv Kardak (59) in the order on July 25, a copy of which was made available on Monday. According to the prosecution, the accused stabbed his brother Anand Kardak and also injured the wife of his another brother with a kitchen knife following a property-related dispute at Wagle Estate in Maharashtra's Thane city on January 6, 2021. During the trial, the accused's counsel argued that he acted in self-defense. The court noted the victims had come to claim the property and apart from pushing, the accused had not attributed anything else to them. 'It is borne out from the material that the accused himself got a knife and assaulted both the victims," the judge observed. The accused 'can certainly be said to have been deprived of the power of self control by the sudden provocation, resulting him to proceed with the assault", the court said. There was no pre-meditation on the part of accused and certainly it was a sudden fight in the heat of passion upon a sudden quarrel," it said. 'There was no intention on the part of the accused of causing death or of causing such bodily injury as is likely to cause death. But certainly he had a knowledge at the time of assault about the same," the court said. In such circumstances, instead of offence under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, the accused shall be liable to be convicted under IPC section 304 part II (culpable homicide not not amounting to murder), it said. The court acquitted the accused of the charge under IPC section 307 for attempt to murder his sister-in-law, the informant in the case. Although the doctor mentions that the informant was admitted in hospital for five days, neither the discharge papers nor treatment papers are produced on record, it said. 'Considering the overall history of the matter, an attempt to over implicate the accused cannot be ruled out. In such circumstances, it cannot be said that an offence under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC has been made out beyond reasonable doubt," it said. The court directed that the fine amount of Rs 1 lakh imposed on the accused be paid to the immediate legal heir of the deceased upon due verification.
