SpongeBob heads to the underworld in wild new trailer for 'Search for SquarePants'
This marks SpongeBob's fourth feature film since his television debut in 1999. The upcoming release features a high-stakes journey beneath the sea where SpongeBob must confront the legendary spectral pirate. While the Dutchman has previously been voiced by Brian Doyle-Murray, the film now enlists Mark Hamill for the role, giving the villain a fresh and ominous presence.
The film sticks with the original voice cast including Tom Kenny as SpongeBob, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick Star, and Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs. Newcomers like Ice Spice, George Lopez, Regina Hall, Arturo Castro, and Sherry Cola will also appear as yet-unnamed characters.
Unlike the show's 2D animation, Search for SquarePants uses a vivid 3D animation style. The film is directed by Derek Drymon in his feature debut and written by veteran SpongeBob scribes Marc Ceccarelli, Kaz, and Pam Brady. Brady also serves as a producer alongside Lisa Stewart and Aaron Dem.
The story picks up with SpongeBob on a daring mission that blends comedy and creepiness, offering a visual upgrade while staying true to its underwater roots. This is the franchise's first theatrical release in over a decade, following 2020's Sponge on the Run, which went straight to streaming.
Paramount will release the film in theaters on December 19, just in time for the holiday season. With its blend of nostalgia, new faces, and bold visuals, this could be SpongeBob's most daring journey yet.

Skydance to lead Paramount merger
Skydance Media CEO David Ellison will lead the new company as chief executive after its merger with Paramount Global is completed by August 7, the independent studio said on Monday, reported Reuters. After the deal closes, the company is expected to be structured into three primary business segments — studios, direct-to-consumer and TV media. Former NBCUniversal chief executive, Jeff Shell, will become president of Paramount, overseeing day-to-day operations. Andy Gordon, a veteran of Goldman Sachs, will serve as chief operating officer. Both join the media company from RedBird Capital Partners, Skydance's financial partner on the Paramount transaction. Paramount co-CEO George Cheeks will remain with the company as its chair of media, overseeing its broadcast and cable television business. Netflix veteran Cindy Holland will chair its direct-to-consumer business, overseeing the company's Paramount+ and PlutoTV streaming services. Skydance's chief creative officer, Dana Goldberg, will serve as co-chair of Paramount Pictures with Josh Greenstein, the former president of Sony Pictures' motion picture group. Tom Ryan, the president and CEO of Paramount Streaming, will be leaving the company. He co-founded PlutoTV, the free streaming service that helped popularise so-called FAST channels, for free ad-supported streaming television. In a statement, Ellison hailed the new executive team as equipped "to deliver on our bold vision for a new Paramount." He has previously pitched his view of Paramount as a "tech hybrid" media firm that will prioritize expanding the Paramount+ streaming service to better compete in the crowded direct-to-consumer video market. The Federal Communications Commission cleared the merger last month, just weeks after Paramount settled a lawsuit filed by US President Donald Trump over CBS' editing of a 60 Minutes interview with his Democratic opponent, former Vice President Kamala Harris. The merger was largely necessitated by the persistent decline of the traditional cable TV business as audiences rapidly abandon linear TV in favour of streaming platforms, forcing Paramount to take nearly USD6 billion in write-downs on cable assets.

South Park pulled from HBO Max after Trump deepfake episode sparks backlash
South Park has been pulled from HBO Max following a controversial Season 27 premiere that featured a deepfake of Donald Trump. The episode, titled Sermon on the 'Mount', marked the animated show's return after nearly two years and ignited immediate backlash for its depiction of Trump nude, wandering the desert, and in bed with Satan. The episode also mocked the former president in a faux public service announcement. Trump hasn't been portrayed on South Park since 1997, making the satire especially jarring for longtime viewers. The White House responded sharply, with assistant press secretary Taylor Rogers dismissing the show as 'irrelevant' and calling the episode 'a desperate attempt for attention.' Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone sarcastically apologized at San Diego Comic-Con, saying, 'We're terribly sorry,' which drew laughter from the audience. The controversy coincides with a major streaming shift. Starting August 4, South Park will no longer be available on HBO Max. Under a $1.5 billion deal signed in July, the entire series—including 26 past seasons, feature-length specials, and 50 new episodes—will stream exclusively on Paramount+. Stephen Colbert praised the creators on The Late Show, calling the episode a message of hope and defending creative freedom in AI-driven satire. Since its 1997 debut, South Park has built a reputation for fearless humor and political satire. Despite criticism, it remains one of television's most influential and enduring animated series.

A Quiet Place Part III sets July 2027 release with John Krasinski returning as director
John Krasinski is officially returning to write, direct, and produce A Quiet Place Part III, which is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027. Paramount Pictures announced the release date this week, confirming that the third installment in the blockbuster horror franchise is moving forward with Krasinski at the helm. The film will be produced by Krasinski and Allyson Seeger's Sunday Night Productions alongside Platinum Dunes. Casting for A Quiet Place Part III has not been confirmed. It's unclear if original stars Emily Blunt, Noah Jupe, or Millicent Simmonds will return, especially given major character developments in earlier installments. While plot details are under wraps, it's expected the film will continue the tense, sound-sensitive survival narrative that has defined the franchise. The Quiet Place series has been a major success for Paramount, grossing over $900 million worldwide. Krasinski directed the first two films, while Michael Sarnoski directed the 2024 spin-off, A Quiet Place: Day One. Krasinski, who rose to fame on NBC's The Office, has since become a prominent filmmaker. His other directing efforts include the family fantasy film IF and Apple's Fountain of Youth, where he starred opposite Natalie Portman. He announced his return to the Quiet Place universe via Instagram, shortly before Paramount's expected merger with Skydance is finalized. Fans of the franchise can expect more eerie silence and suspenseful storytelling when A Quiet Place Part III arrives in summer 2027.
