Land dispute led to bizman Khemka's murder: Police

Time of Indiaa day ago
Patna: Police on Sunday claimed to have cracked the murder case of prominent businessman Gopal Khemka, who was shot dead at the gate of his apartment in the Gandhi Maidan police station area on the night of July 4.
The alleged shooter and the mastermind have been arrested and are currently being interrogated on a five-day police remand.
According to police, Ashok Sao, the alleged conspirator, and Umesh Yadav, the shooter, were arrested three days after the murder and sent to judicial custody in Beur Central Jail. They are now in remand till July 16. Investigators suspect a long-standing land dispute as the motive, although specific details regarding the disputed properties remain unclear.
During a search of Ashok's flat at Udaigiri Apartment under Kotwali police station, police recovered several land documents, a 9mm pistol, 17 bullets and Rs 6.5 lakh in cash.
Patna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Kartikeya K Sharma said, "The shooter had attempted to kill Khemka earlier on June 30. He made three previous attempts — two were foiled due to police patrols and the third failed due to rain. CCTV footage of his reconnaissance has also been recovered."

Police have obtained an audio recording of a heated argument between Ashok and Khemka, which has emerged as key evidence. Investigators believe more people may be involved in the conspiracy.
"Ashok and Khemka were locked in a property dispute for the past three years. Land transactions in Biharsharif (Nalanda), Fatuha and Daniyawan (Patna district) appear central to the conflict. Ashok told us Khemka ruined his business, which prompted him to plan a contract killing," Sharma said.
The SSP added that the clothes worn by the shooter during the attack have also been recovered. He added, "Umesh had been involved in contract killings for a long time, though police were unaware until now. His arrest revealed his past criminal activities."
Sharma also spoke about Vikas alias Raja, the alleged arms supplier, who was killed in a police encounter at Damaria Ghat in Patna in the early hours of July 8. "He was not just an arms dealer but also a contract killer. He had killed three to four people on contract," the SSP said.
The police are now examining Ashok's cellphone, WhatsApp chats, and seized documents to uncover further details of the property dispute and identify any additional conspirators.

A total of 12 officers, including Verma, are part of the Delhi Police's latest rejig. With the transfer of Verma, a 2005 batch IPS officer, the ACB will now be headed by his junior, Vikramjit Singh. MN Tiwari, a 2004 batch IPS officer, has replaced Vikramjit Singh in the security division. Under Verma's regime, FIRs of various cases, involving several AAP leaders who served as ministers under the previous government, were registered with the ACB, including the Rs 2,000-crore classroom fraud case. Awaiting appointment for over a month now, 1994 batch IPS officer Rajesh Khurana has been posted as the Special Commissioner of Police (MD), Delhi Police Housing Corporation Limited, where his batchmate Neeraj Thakur was posted. Taxpayers urged to revise fraudulent returns to avoid penalty

The Income Tax Department on Monday conducted survey operations at 18 locations across Tamil Nadu, including Coimbatore, in connection with a bogus refund racket, according to a release. The action covered premises in Trichy, Salem, Madurai, Chennai, Vellore, Erode, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Theni, Sivagangai, Pudukkottai, Virudhunagar, and Tirunelveli. The release said that income tax practitioners and intermediaries had assisted thousands of taxpayers in filing returns with inflated or fictitious deductions under various sections of the Income Tax Act, including 80GGC (political donations), 80D (medical reimbursements), 80C (tuition fees), and 10(13A) (house rent allowance). Fraudulent refunds running into several crores were claimed. The department found that specific email IDs had been created to file these returns in bulk. The intermediaries had reached out to taxpayers — including government employees and serving and retired defence personnel — across Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and Bihar, using closed WhatsApp and Telegram groups and word of mouth. Incriminating evidence was impounded during the operations, and investigations are ongoing. The department urged taxpayers not to fall for such schemes. Those who have filed incorrect returns have been advised to file updated or revised returns voluntarily. The release added that such action may help avoid penalties or prosecution, and that assistance would be provided to those coming forward.

Miscreants lock up Lingayat Panchamasali Peetha; police step up security

Bagalkot: Unidentified miscreants locked up Lingayat Panchamasali Jagadguru Peetha of Kudalasangama on Saturday night. Police have stepped up security in the area to avoid any untoward incidents. Basava Jaya Mruthyunjaya Swamiji, the pontiff of the peetha, told TOI that he came to know about the incident through some WhatsApp groups on Sunday. "We are out of station. Miscreants, who could not tolerate the support of the Panchamasali community for our agitation, might have locked up the peetha. Police were informed and they assured security for our buildings," he added. He also said he was busy planning the next course of action in the agitation demanding 2A reservation for the community. It may be recalled that Hungund MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar had said that he would change the pontiff if needed. Following a rift with Basava Jaya Mruthyunjaya Swamiji, many leaders of the Panchamasali community supported the idea of changing the pontiff of the peetha. Kashappanavar is the new president of Akhila Bharat Panchamasali Samaj and the president of the peetha. Rifts arose between the pontiff and community leaders, including Kashappanavar, over MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, who was expelled by BJP. Following this, the swamiji is said to have visited Kudalasangama rarely. Despite repeated attempts, Kashappanavar was unavailable for comment.
