30kph speed limit to be gazetted at school zones, says Transport Minister
The Transport Minister said with an average 70 fatalities in school zones a year, there was a pressing need to reduce the speed limit in these areas.
He said the Cabinet Committee on Road Safety and Traffic Congestion chaired by the deputy prime minister had agreed in principle to reduce the speed limit.
"The Road Safety Council will get this programme going at selected schools this year.
"We need to do this to ensure the safety of both the students as well as other road users," he said after chairing the 61st annual general meeting of the council here.
Loke said studies show that reducing the speed limit to 30kph can greatly reduce fatalities and serious injury to road users.
He said efforts should be made to put up signs, school crossings, speed breakers, road dividers and other safety equipment in school zones. Wardens will also be engaged.
Loke said the Public Works Department and local councils have been told the gazette the new speed limit.
"They have been notified. It is my hope that action is quickly taken to gazette the relevant laws," he said.
Loke said speed limits in school zones was a norm in many countries.
"This is actually the international standard. This was also one of the resolutions under the Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety which we took part in previously, " he said.
He said he hoped motorists would not object to this as it was for the safety of students.

'I won't budge even an inch!': Has Akmal emerges stronger after a 2-hour police interrogation?
SUCH is the immediate reaction of firebrand UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Salleh following a two-hour statement giving session at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur which stretches to the wee hours of this morning (Aug 16). This could possibly be the case of the DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) having heeded the call by the party's secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook to lodge 'nationwide police report' to stem the notoriety of the Merlimau state assemblyman over flying the Jalur Gemilsng upside down incident. 'The struggle is not over, UMNO Youth will continue to stand at the forefront for the sovereignty of the country,' read a statement issued by the movement. 'UMNO Youth will not budge an inch even if pressured, threatened or intimidated. As long as blood flows in the body, the dignity of the country will continue to be defended!' 'No fear, no surrender' Added the Melaka state EXCO for rural development, agriculture and food security who is renowned for his race and religion defender antic in a personal note: 'As we approach the end of the age, the righteous will be looked down upon while the wicked is worshipped. 'This is the responsibility of all of us for the sake of religion, race and our homeland. It's easy to talk but difficult to implement. We shall not budge.' In a Facebook post yesterday afternoon, the Russia-trained doctor had stated that an investigating officer from Bukit Aman had contacted him to have his statement recorded at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters at 11pm on Friday (Aug 15). 'If this is the price I've to pay to defend the honour of this country, I'm willing to fight till the end,' he declared. 'No way would I fear their tribes! No fear, no surrender!' Prior to that, DAP has strongly condemned Akmal's action of leading a march and demonstration in front of a hardware shop in Kepala Batas on Thursday (Aug 14) despite warnings from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Penang Police chief not to hold any gatherings. 'The action is a form of bullying and intimidation against the trader amid on-going investigation and that he has apologised for the mistake in installing the flag,' Loke who is also the Transport Minister had pointed out. 'Actions like this go beyond the limits of the law and the norms of the multi-racial society in Malaysia. Appropriate punishments must be meted out for such extreme acts.' DAP had wanted the police to act under Section 503 of the Penal Code which is criminal intimidation; Section 504 of the Penal Code (deliberately issuing defamatory statements with the intention of causing disorder); and Section 505 of the Penal Code (issuing statements that cause public mischief). – Aug 16, 2025

AGC warns Malaysians against vigilantism in Jalur Gemilang offence after Umno Youth's Kepala Batas protest
The AGC says members of the public must not assume the role of the authorities, such as ordering the removal of flags or seizing materials without legal power. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 15): The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has today warned Malaysians against vigilantism in cases involving the improper display of the Jalur Gemilang, amid furore over Umno Youth's protest in Kepala Batas, Penang over the matter. The AGC said such actions could include raiding premises, spreading personal details, or making unfounded accusations on social media. 'The Chambers also reminds the public not to take matters into their own hands against anyone suspected of such acts,' it said in a statement here. The AGC also warned the public against provoking or issuing threats against the individuals or organisations concerned. It added members of the public must not assume the role of the authorities, such as ordering the removal of flags or seizing materials without legal power. All complaints or related information should instead be channelled to the relevant authorities for appropriate action, it said. It cited several recent incidents including the Malaysian flag being mounted upside down at a shop in Kepala Batas, Penang, at a school in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, and the depiction of an incomplete Malaysian flag in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination result slip. Other examples included the depiction of an incomplete Malaysian flag on the official social media accounts of news publications Harian Metro, Sin Chew Daily, and Kwong Wah Yit Poh. 'The Chambers emphasises that all parties are responsible for respecting the Malaysian flag as a symbol of national sovereignty, and for complying with all laws and guidelines in force governing its use. 'Any offence involving the improper mounting or display of the Malaysian flag, which could cause confusion, misunderstanding, or public unrest, may be subject to legal action,' it said. Earlier, DAP instructed its youth wings nationwide to lodge police reports against the Umno Youth protest under Section 503 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, Section 504 for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, and Section 505 for statements conducing to public mischief. Party secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook said reports would also be made under Section 507B of the Penal Code for causing harassment, distress, fear or anxiety, and Section 507C for uttering words likely to cause such effects. – Malay Mail AGC Jalur Gemilang vigilantism
