A dealer dubbed the "Ketamine Queen" has agreed to plead guilty to supplying the drugs that killed "Friends" actor Matthew Perry, the US Department of Justice said on Monday.
Jasveen Sangha, 42, will admit several charges, including one of distribution of ketamine resulting in death or serious bodily injury in relation to the late star.
A dual citizen of the United States and Britain, she is expected to formally enter her pleas in the coming weeks She has been in federal custody since August 2024.
Sangha will become the fifth person to admit playing a part in the death of the actor, who had openly struggled for decades with substance addiction.
Perry, 54, was found dead in the hot tub of his Los Angeles home in October 2023. A criminal investigation was launched soon after an autopsy discovered he had high levels of ketamine – an anesthetic – in his system.
Last month, Dr Salvador Plasencia pleaded guilty to four counts of distribution of ketamine in the weeks before Perry's death. Another doctor, Mark Chavez, admitted last year to conspiring to distribute ketamine to Perry.
Plasencia allegedly bought ketamine off Chavez and sold it to the American-Canadian actor at hugely inflated prices.
"I wonder how much this moron will pay," Plasencia wrote in one text message.
According to her plea agreement, Sangha worked with a middleman, Erik Fleming, to sell 51 vials of ketamine to Perry's live-in personal assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa.
Iwamasa repeatedly injected Perry with the ketamine that Sangha supplied, including on October 28, 2023, when he administered at least three shots of Sangha's ketamine, which killed the actor.
The Justice Department said when Sangha heard news reports about Perry's sudden death, she tried to cover her tracks.
"Delete all our messages," she instructed Fleming.
When investigators raided Sangha's home they found methamphetamine, ketamine, ecstasy, cocaine, and counterfeit Xanax pills, as well as a money counting machine, a scale, and devices to detect wireless signals and hidden cameras, according to the Justice Department.
Sangha is expected to plead guilty to one count of maintaining a drug-involved premises, three counts of distribution of ketamine, and one count of distribution of ketamine resulting in death or serious bodily injury.
"She's taking responsibility for her actions," her lawyer Mark Geragos told AFP.
Sangha could face decades in prison when sentenced. (AFP)

US Justice Department to investigate Federal Reserve's Lisa Cook, urges her removal

The US Justice Department signalled possible plans to investigate Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, with a top official informing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell of the probe and encouraging him to remove her from the board in a letter sent on Thursday. Ed Martin, a Justice Department official who has led similar investigations into Senator Adam Schiff of California and New York Attorney General Letitia James, told Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell that Cook's case 'requires further examination' in the letter. 'At this time, I encourage you to remove Ms Cook from your Board,' Martin wrote. 'Do it today before it is too late! After all, no American thinks it is appropriate that she serve during this time with a cloud hanging over her.' US President Donald Trump has discussed firing Cook, according to a White House official familiar, but that is not under active consideration. Trump would prefer to see Cook resign or be fired by Powell, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly on the issue. Powell does not have the legal authority to fire Cook, a Senate-confirmed presidential appointee. Only the president can remove a Fed governor and only for cause. Cook on Wednesday said she intended to remain at the central bank, after Trump called for her resignation.

Ukrainian held over 2022 Nord Stream pipeline blasts

Ukrainian held over 2022 Nord Stream pipeline blasts A satellite image shows gas from the Nord Stream pipeline bubbling up in the water following the September 2022 explosions. File photo: Roscosmos via Reuters A Ukrainian man has been arrested in Italy on suspicion of coordinating the 2022 attacks on the Nord Stream gas pipelines, German prosecutors said on Thursday, marking a breakthrough in an episode that sharpened tensions between Russia and the West. Seen by both Moscow and the West as an act of sabotage, the explosions severely damaged three pipelines carrying gas from Russia to Europe, prompting a major escalation in the Ukraine conflict and squeezing energy supplies on the continent. No one has ever taken responsibility for the blasts. The arrest comes just as Kyiv is engaged in fraught diplomatic discussions with the United States over how to end the war in Ukraine without giving away major concessions and swathes of its own territory to Russia. "The bombing of the pipelines must be investigated, including through criminal prosecution. Therefore, it is good that we are making progress in this regard," said German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig in a statement. An official in the Ukrainian president's office said he could not comment as it was not clear who had been arrested. The official reiterated Ukraine's denial of any role in the blasts. The suspect, identified only as Serhii K. under German privacy laws, was part of a group of people who planted devices on the pipelines near the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, a statement from the prosecutor's office said. He and his accomplices had set off from Rostock on Germany's northeastern coast in a sailing yacht to carry out the attack, it said. The vessel had been rented from a German company with the help of forged identity documents via middlemen, it added. Authorities acted on a European arrest warrant for the suspect, who faces charges of collusion to cause an explosion, anti-constitutional sabotage and destruction of important structures. Carabinieri officers arrested him overnight in the province of Rimini on Italy's Adriatic coast, the German prosecutors' statement said. The Italian Carabinieri confirmed the arrest and said the suspect was aged 49 but gave no further details. In September 2022, one of the two lines of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline was damaged by mysterious blasts, along with both lines of Nord Stream 1 that carried Russian gas to Europe. Both the US and Ukraine have denied having anything to do with the attacks, as has Russia. (Reuters)

Trump calls on Fed Governor Cook to resign

Trump calls on Fed Governor Cook to resign Lisa Cook said she has "no intention of being bullied to step down" after Trump demanded her resignation over allegations about two mortgages. File photo: Reuters US President Donald Trump on Wednesday called on Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook to resign on the basis of allegations made by one of his political allies about mortgages she holds in Michigan and Georgia, intensifying his effort to gain influence over the US central bank. "Cook must resign, now!!!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, sharing a Bloomberg news report on how the Federal Housing Finance Agency's director has called for greater scrutiny of Cook over a pair of mortgages. Cook said she had "no intention of being bullied to step down" from her position at the central bank after US Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte raised the allegations in a tweet. "I do intend to take any questions about my financial history seriously as a member of the Federal Reserve and so I am gathering the accurate information to answer any legitimate questions and provide the facts," she said in a statement. Trump has also told aides he is considering trying to fire Cook, the first Black woman to serve on the Fed board, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing a senior White House official and another person familiar with the matter. The White House declined to comment on the WSJ report. Pulte alleged in a post on X earlier on Wednesday that Cook had designated a condo in Atlanta as her primary residence after taking a loan on her home in Michigan, which she also declared as a primary residence. Pulte told CNBC he is also probing property Cook has in Massachusetts. Loans for a primary residence can carry easier terms than those for second homes or investment properties. Pulte asked US Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate, and Trump quickly amplified the allegation. Democrats on the US House of Representatives Committee on Financial Services blasted Trump's attack on Cook and vowed to fight it. "Donald Trump is making up blatant lies in an effort to oust the first Black woman to serve on the Federal Reserve Board, so he can replace her with another unqualified loyalist who will do his bidding," they said in a post on X. "This is another attack on the Fed's independence. We can't let this happen." Senator Elizabeth Warren, top Democrat on the Senate Banking Committee, echoed those concerns, saying in a statement: "The president and his administration should not weaponise the federal government to illegally fire independent Fed Board members."
