KUALA BERANG: No Malaysians were recruited into the recently- uncovered foreign militant network linked to Bangladeshi nationals, confirms Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
The Home Minister said investigations by the police's Special Branch revealed that the group, which aimed to spread extremist ideology rooted in Islamic State (IS) beliefs, involved only Bangladeshi nationals.
'Their activities were focused on violent extremism with the objective of toppling the government in their country of origin (Bangladesh),' he said to reporters after launching a programme here, Bernama reported.
'It is important to inform the public that our security forces are on high alert. If such activities are not addressed firmly, they could pose a serious threat to national security.'
The Home Minister had recently revealed that police dismantled a foreign militant network with the arrest of 36 Bangladeshi nationals suspected of direct involvement in the radical movement.
The group was said to have created a recruitment cell within their community to indoctrinate their radical beliefs, collect funds for terrorist operations and topple the government in their home countries.
Five of the suspects had been charged in Shah Alam and Johor Baru, 15 were issued with deportation orders while 16 are still being investigated for their roles in the movement.
On another matter, Saifuddin Nasution said the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) will soon undergo restructuring to enhance its effectiveness, with the police taking the lead.
'Previously, the police, Bank Negara and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) shared oversight of the NSRC which led to certain operational shortcomings.
'Under the new structure, the police will directly receive scam reports, record the necessary details and notify the relevant banks immediately to freeze the victim's account.
'Efforts to recover stolen funds will follow promptly,' he said.
The restructuring will also see the NSRC's 997 hotline operate 24 hours a day, allowing victims to lodge reports at any time.
The number of staff will also be increased to improve response time and victim support.
Saifuddin Nasution added that the proposed improvements have been approved by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and will be implemented soon.

Bangladesh opens murder trial of key student protester

DHAKA: Bangladesh opened on Monday the murder trial of student protester Abu Sayeed, whose killing last year escalated demonstrations nationwide that ultimately ousted then prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Sayeed died aged 23 in the northern city of Rangpur, the first student demonstrator killed in the police crackdown on protests. Footage of his last moments on July 16, 2024 -- standing with his arms outstretched before he was shot at close range -- was shown repeatedly on Bangladeshi television after Hasina's downfall. Prosecutors at Bangladesh's war crimes tribunal have charged 30 people in connection with the killing. Only four are in custody -- two police officers, a university official and a student leader -- with arrest warrants issued for the remaining 26. Up to 1,400 people were killed between July and August last year, according to the United Nations, when Hasina's government ordered a crackdown in a failed bid to cling to power. Chief prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam said the court had accepted the formal charges, marking the opening of the trial. 'We have stated that Sheikh Hasina ordered the then interior minister to use lethal weapons; the inspector general of police at the time carried out the instruction, and the forces on the ground, under senior police officers, executed the order,' Islam told journalists. 'Senior members of the university administration actively participated in quashing the protest.' They include the former vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University (BRUR), Hasibur Rashid. The opening of the Sayeed murder trial comes a day before the first anniversary of students launching their protests. Initially demanding reforms to a quota system for public sector jobs, the demonstrations widened to include more general grievances against Hasina's government. Hasina, who fled to India on August 5, is not listed in the Sayeed case and her separate trial in absentia opened in early June. Prosecutors have filed five charges against her that amount to crimes against humanity, which she denies according to her now-banned Awami League.

Perak On Right Track For Post-pandemic Socioeconomic Recovery- MB

LENGGONG, June 30 (Bernama) -- Perak is on the right track in its post-pandemic socioeconomic recovery efforts and has laid out various initiatives for the well-being of its people by 2030, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. He said that as the Perak Sejahtera 2030 development plan enters its third year, there have been significant improvements in the people's standard of living. 'Since its launch on June 15, 2022, 108 out of the 272 outlined projects and initiatives have been completed. Another 128 are currently in progress, while the remaining 36 are at the pre-implementation stage. 'The state government has also identified 127 new projects to be listed in the Perak Sejahtera 2030 Dashboard for systematic monitoring and progress reporting,' he said when presenting the Third-Year Progress Report of Perak Sejahtera 2030, here today. He noted that as the plan enters its fourth year of implementation, the state government remains committed to accelerating the development of five economic growth nodes and exploring new economic sectors. Saarani said the state government is also mobilising efforts to further strengthen Perak Sejahtera 2030 by exploring new revenue sources, particularly in the Blue, Green, and Care Economies, to boost sustainable state development. 'The various initiatives carried out over the past three years have shown encouraging progress, reflecting the state government's determination to bring about positive changes for the people,' he said. According to Saarani, several economic indicators show that Perak has successfully risen from the downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. 'The state was once on the brink of recession, with a deficit of RM70 million, but we have rebounded with a surplus for three consecutive years, including RM64 million in 2023, the highest in Perak's history.
