Clodagh Hawe's sister wants gardaí better trained to deal with murder-suicides

Alan Hawe, a vice-principal, killed himself, his 39-year-old wife Clodagh and their sons, Liam, 13, Niall, 11, and Ryan, six, in August 2016 at their home near Ballyjamesduff.

Ms Connolly, who has written a memoir called Deadly Silence, said the deaths were not investigated thoroughly by gardaí and she wants this approach changed.
'He was dead, what did it matter? The 'why' wasn't accounted for in that investigation, but it mattered to us,' she told RTÉ Radio's Brendan O'Connor Show.
She said a second investigation carried out by the serious crime review team, authorised by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris in 2019, highlighted what was missed in the first investigation.

This included CCTV that had not been examined, digital evidence that was overlooked, and 20 key witnesses who needed to be reinterviewed using different techniques.

Ms Connolly said she has been told gardaí in training will be advised to gather evidence in murder-suicides as though it is a case that will be prosecuted, but she said she wants that rolled out to all rural garda stations because officers were not prepared to 'find Clodagh and the boys like that'.
She called on Mr Harris to release the findings of the serious crime review, for which Ms Connolly has seen a summary, because she said it was important that the recommendations are seen by domestic violence institutions.
'I really feel that it would warn people and show people the signs, behaviours, patterns of what family annihilators look like.'

Ms Connolly said the review heard from an expert that analysed a letter left by Hawe differently to those involved in the initial investigation, and that the teacher's pornography 'addiction' was also revealed.

'His murder letter was used to diagnose depression in an inquest, whereas in the serious crime review this showed – through (Scottish forensic criminologist) Professor David Wilson – actually there was pseudo-altruistic comments in that letter.
'He came across as caring, he wanted the perception of what he was when he was dead to be he was still a good man – that had nothing to do with depression.
'He could show that the behaviours and patterns leading up to their deaths, the research that was done digitally – that wasn't shown in the first investigation – where Alan Hawe was researching up to a year before he killed them.'

She said Hawe had put a 'distance' between her and her sister, and she would 'never be able to have a conversation in the kitchen with Clodagh on my own'.
Ms Connolly said all texts she sent to her older sister were forwarded on to Hawe.
Recalling a tribute she wrote on her brother-in-law's Facebook profile in the immediate aftermath of the deaths, Ms Connolly said she was operating on 'autopilot' in her grief and her initial reaction was one of 'pure shock and trauma'.
She said there was 'chaos' following the deaths and that no one 'said stop' to burying Hawe alongside the wife and children he had killed.

'The day after the funeral, myself and mam went to the grave, and I will never forget how mam looked that day.
'We stood there in silence, and I thought 'what have we done?' And as I thought it, she turned around and said 'what have we done? We've buried him with them'.'
She added: 'You can't align the two events, this man who you trusted for so long did such a terrible thing.
'You know something must have happened, but never in a million years would you think – especially considering the findings of the serious crime review – that so much planning went into what he did that night.'

Man, 45, charged with murdering 73-year-old after woman found dead with a serious head injury
A MAN, 45, has been charged with murder after a woman, 73, was found dead. Police were called to a property on Russia Lane, in Bethnal Green, London, at 9pm on Thursday. Sufia Khatun was found with a serious head injury and paramedics sadly pronounced her dead at the scene. The Met Police detained 45-year-old Mizanur Rahman, who was known to the victim. He will appear at Thames Magistrates Court tomorrow charged with murder. Ms Khatun's next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. Det Ch Supt Brittany Clarke, who leads the Central East Command Unit, said: "Our team of officers and forensic specialists are working at pace to establish the full circumstances that led to this woman's tragic death. "This is believed to be an isolated incident, with no wider risk to the general public. "However, residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area over the coming days." New Orleans mayor indicted on federal corruption charges
The New Orleans mayor, LaToya Cantrell, was indicted on Friday on federal corruption charges after spending roughly three years under investigation. The indictment against Cantrell came after the September 2024 indictment of local businessman Randy Farrell, who was charged with exchanging gifts with the mayor so that she would allegedly fire a municipal employee who was investigating Farrell's building inspection company. Among the alleged gifts were tickets to a January 2019 New Orleans Saints football game, which was being played with an appearance at the Super Bowl on the line, a cellphone and lunch at an upscale Ruth's Chris Steak House in the city. Cantrell had also drawn scrutiny for an alleged affair with a now retired New Orleans police officer who had served as her bodyguard. The bodyguard, Jeffrey Vappie, allegedly claimed he was at work while he was actually engaging in 'a personal and romantic relationship' with the mayor. Vappie was charged as a co-defendant in Friday's indictment against Cantrell, full details of which were not immediately available, as Guardian reporting partner WWL Louisiana reported. He had previously been charged with wire fraud and lying to FBI agents in July 2024, shortly after he retired from New Orleans' police force. The allegations called to mind the 2018 scandal that cost the Nashville mayor, Megan Barry, her job and centered on an affair with her bodyguard, Robert Forrest. Prosecutors who had obtained the 2024 charges against Vappie have alleged he researched that case online two years earlier. Both Vappie and Farrell have pleaded not guilty to the charges previously filed against them. While the Donald Trump-led US justice department obtained the indictment against Cantrell about seven months into the Republican's second presidency, the federal investigation into the mayor began while Joe Biden – her fellow Democrat – was in his second full year in the Oval Office. Cantrell's lawyer, Eddie Castaing, confirmed to the Associated Press on Friday that an indictment was returned against his client. He also said her name was read aloud by a federal magistrate judge as a defendant. Cantrell, a native of Compton, California, had been a New Orleans city council member before winning election as its mayor in November 2017. She thus became New Orleans's first female mayor and was re-elected four years later. Her second term – which saw the unexpected death of her husband in August 2023 – is due to end in January 2026. Man (20) accused of 14 counts counts of rape and sexual assault of man
A 20-year-old student has been charged with multiple counts of rape and sexual assault of another male in Dublin four years ago. The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was aged 16 and a juvenile at the time of the sexual abuse over a three month period in 2021. Advertisement He was arrested on Friday and charged with six counts of rape and eight for sexual assault at a specific address in south Co Dublin. He appeared before Judge John Brennan at a late sitting of Dublin District Court. Detective Garda Liam Conway said the young man's replied 'No' when each charge was put to him. The court heard that the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that the man would face 'trial on indictment'. That means, due to the nature of some of the charges, he will be tried in the Central Criminal Court. Detective Garda Conway confirmed that the accused was a minor when the alleged offences occured and there was no objection to bail provided he obeyed a series of conditions. Advertisement Judge Brennan ordered him to provide gardaí with a contact phone number, remain contactable at all times, notify them of any address change, sign on at a north Dublin Garda station, and surrender his passport. Furthermore, he told the man that it was as conditions of bail that must not communicate with the complainant, directly or indirectly, including by social media. Defence counsel Kevin McCrave consulted with the accused who did not address the court, before telling the judge that his client consented to those terms. Judge Brennan warned there would be consequences for breaching them and the barrister stressed that he would explain that to his client, who has yet indicate a plea. Bail was set at €750 and he was ordered to appear at the Children's Court in September to be served with a book of evidence and returned for trial to the Central Criminal Court. Legal aid was granted after the court heard the accused was a student, on social welfare and unemployed.
