Sean ‘Diddy' Combs' former girlfriend said fighting back made

Kuwait Times15-05-2025

Sean 'Diddy' Combs' former girlfriend Casandra Ventura testified on Wednesday that early in their relationship, she physically fought back when the hip-hop mogul abused her but stopped because doing so made him more violent. Ventura, a rhythm and blues singer known as 'Cassie' who took the stand wearing a turtleneck dress and a dark jacket, is the prosecution's star witness in the high-profile sex-trafficking case against Combs.
She told the jury on Tuesday that she took part for a decade in Combs' drug-fueled parties known as 'Freak Offs,' often fearful he could become violent if she didn't, leaving her with black eyes and bruises all over her body.
On Wednesday, the third day of testimony in Manhattan federal court, Ventura, 38, told jurors that while fighting back sometimes slowed Combs down, it usually just made the abuse worse.
'It would just make him more violent, make him stronger, make him want to push me harder,' she told jurors. Combs, 55, is being jailed in Brooklyn when not in court. He wore a light sweater over a white collared shirt to court on Wednesday.
Singer and model Cassie Ventura (left) and Rap mogul P Diddy (aka Sean Combs) arrive for the traditionnal Clive Davis party on the eve of the 60th Annual Grammy Awards on January 28, 2018, in New York.
Combs has pleaded not guilty to five felony counts of racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. If convicted on all counts, he would face a minimum 15 years in prison and could face life behind bars.
Earlier this week jurors saw a 2016 surveillance video from the hallway of a Los Angeles hotel where a towel-clad Combs threw Ventura to the ground and began to kick her. She said the video was taken after a 'Freak Off' where Combs gave her a black eye.
'I made it to the elevators, I got my sneakers on, and the next thing I knew, I was thrown to the ground,' Ventura said.
Asked by a prosecutor why she stayed on the ground, Ventura said: 'I felt like it was the safest place to be.' The criminal trial could take up to two months. Combs also faces dozens of civil lawsuits by women and men who accuse him of sexual abuse. He has denied wrongdoing, and said his relationships were consensual.
Ventura, 38, testified earlier that she once viewed her relationship with Combs, which began in her early 20s, as her first real adult relationship.
But she said Combs became more controlling as the 'Freak Offs,' which she said lasted as long as four days, took over their relationship and derailed her music career.
Combs has apologized for the video, and his lawyers have said prosecutors have tried to improperly punish him for his 'swingers' lifestyle. They are expected to cross-examine Ventura after she finishes her direct testimony.
Also known during his career as Puff Daddy and P. Diddy, Combs founded Bad Boy Records and is credited with helping turn artists like Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, Notorious B.I.G. and Usher into stars in the 1990s and 2000s. — AFP

Two BTS megastars released from South Korea military

Two members of K-pop supergroup BTS were released from South Korea's mandatory military service on Tuesday and announced they wanted to start performing again "as soon as possible", prompting a fan frenzy. BTS, South Korea's most lucrative musical act, has been on a hiatus since 2022 while its seven members complete their military service. Hundreds of fans gathered at a site near the two army bases where band leader RM -- recently named "Favorite K-pop Artist" at the American Music Awards -- and singer V were separately discharged. Cheers broke out as they stepped out of different vehicles and hugged, with RM playing a quick song on the saxophone as V stood next to him smiling, holding bunches of flowers. "What we want most right now is to perform again," RM, still wearing his army uniform, told reporters and fans after his discharge. "We're working hard on the new album so we can return to the stage as soon as possible." RM said there had been "many difficult and painful moments" during his 18 months of military service. "Since returning, I've grown closer with my father and old friends — many of whom had already completed their military service," he added. V said military service was "a time for me to reset and rebuild both my body and mind". "Now that I've done that, I truly want to run straight to ARMY as soon as possible," he said, referring to the band's official fandom name. This week, four BTS members will complete their service. Two were discharged last year, and the final member, SUGA -- who has been working as a social service agent for alternative non-active duty service -- will be released later this month. HYBE, the band's agency, had urged fans not to go to the discharge location, citing safety concerns. Flouting the warning, dozens gathered outside V's military base, eagerly awaiting the return of their star. "Honestly, I came here with such high expectations," Yang Ho-hee, 28, told AFP outside the base. Fans had hung colourful banners to welcome the 29-year-old back to civilian life. "Taehyung, let's never be apart again," one said, referring to V's real name, Kim Tae-hyung. Reunion tour? On a football field where the newly released BTS members spoke, hundreds of fans from around the world gathered, hoping to catch a glimpse of their idols. "Actually, it's mixed emotions. I feel like I'm crying already," said Arlene Mendoza, a fan from the Philippines. "I've been travelling to Korea so many times, but this is actually the first time I'll see V." In addition to the army releases, Friday is so-called FESTA -- a celebration that marks the anniversary of the group's debut and typically draws thousands of global fans to Seoul. Mendoza told AFP she plans to attend fellow member J-Hope's concert on Friday, plus join other BTS FESTA events. All the band members signed new contracts with HYBE in 2023, and once SUGA is released on June 21, analysts expect profit-driving reunion activities. "In the case of HYBE share prices, the current market consensus is seen as not fully reflecting BTS's impact," Lim Soo-jin, an analyst at Daishin Securities, told AFP. Despite an ongoing police investigation into the company chairman for suspected insider trading and a recent raid by authorities, analysts say HYBE's shares are up, rising by 10 percent over the past week through June 9. GDP impact Prior to their mandatory military service, the boy band generated more than 5.5 trillion won ($4 billion) in yearly economic impact, according to the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute. That accounts for roughly 0.2 percent of South Korea's total GDP, according to official data. HYBE has hinted at a BTS comeback this year, but has also said the members "need time for reflection and preparation". "Normally, the process goes from song production to album release, then a tour," Lee Jae-sang, CEO of HYBE, told a shareholder meeting in March. "But since BTS have already become global top-tier artists, we are continuing discussions about their vision and what's next," Lee added. Outside HYBE headquarters in Seoul, banners from fans read: "Thank you for making even the waiting feel joyful." The building was wrapped with the slogan "WE ARE BACK", the official logo for the upcoming BTS FESTA. HYBE shares opened nearly three percent higher Tuesday morning, reaching their highest level in two years.--AFP

Shooter kills nine people at Austrian school

VIENNA: An attack on a school in southeastern Austria reportedly by a former student has left several people dead, police said Tuesday, in a rare case of deadly gun violence in a European school. Heavily armed police, a helicopter and paramedics descended upon the school in Graz, where 10 people including the alleged lone shooter were killed and "several severely injured", regional police said on X. "The identities of those affected are currently being established," police said, adding the situation as "secure" and support was being provided to witnesses and those affected. Graz Mayor Elke Kahr told Austrian press agency APA that 10 people including several students and one adult were killed. The alleged shooter acted alone, police said, and his motive is unknown. Austrian media reported the suspect is believed to be a 22-year-old former student who also took his own life. Police and interior ministry officials could not immediately be reached by AFP. "The situation is very unclear at the moment," police sources told Austria's APA news agency. Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker and Interior Minister Gerhard Karner are expected to hold a press conference at 3:00 pm (1300 GMT). "It's a disaster, simply terrible. After all, it's about children," Hasan Darsel, a restaurant owner in the area, told the newspaper Kronen Zeitung. 'Deeply shocked' Condolences poured in from across Europe. EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas declared herself "deeply shocked" Tuesday by reports of the shooting. "Every child should feel safe at school and be able to learn free from fear and violence," Kallas posted on X. "My thoughts are with the victims, their families and the Austrian people in this dark moment." European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said "the news from Graz touches my heart." Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her sympathies to the families of the victims following the "tragic news". Attacks in public are rare in Austria, an Alpine nation of almost 9.2 million people, which ranks among the 10 safest countries in the world, according to the Global Peace Index. School shootings are also much more uncommon in Europe than in the United States but in recent years Europe has been shaken by attacks at schools and universities, that were not connected to terrorism. In France on Tuesday, a teaching assistant was killed at a school in Nogent in the east following a knife attack. In January 2025, an 18-year-old man fatally stabbed a high school student and a teacher at a school in northeastern Slovakia. In December 2024, a 19-year-old man stabbed a seven-year-old student to death and injured several others at a primary school in Zagreb, Croatia. In December 2023, an attack by a student at a university in central Prague left 14 people dead and 25 injured. A few months earlier that year, a 13-year-old gunned down eight fellow classmates and a security guard at an elementary school in downtown Belgrade. Six children and a teacher were also injured. The shooter contacted the police, who arrested him. In 2009, nine pupils, three teachers and three passers-by were killed in a school shooting at Winnenden in southern Germany by a former pupil who then killed himself.--AFP
