Around 25 years ago, the late Volkswagen Group chairman Ferdinand Piëch said he wanted to build a car that boasted 1,001PS and would be capable of over 400kmh. They'd figure out to get there along the way, but the targets had been set.
Interestingly, the all-conquering Veyron was originally planned to have a W18 engine. Bugatti has released these concept car pics outlining the journey from Piëch's train ride to the fastest car in the world, taking in a few very important concepts.

It was that original ride on a Japanese Shinkansen – the 'bullet train' – back in 1997 where Piëch sketched out an 18-cylinder powerhaus that'd fuel his dream of 1,001PS and 400kmh+.
He asked Italdesign's Giorgetto Giugiaro to deliver him a concept capable of bearing such a thing. The front-engined EB 118 arrived at the 1998 Paris Motor Show as a massive two-door homage to the Type 57CS Atlantic whose long bonnet hid a 6.3-litre naturally aspirated W18 engine with 555PS (547bhp). A year later came the EB 218, also designed by GG, this time taking the form of a lavish front-engined four-door that doffed its considerable cap to both the Type 41 Royale and the earlier EB 112 concept from the Artioli era. Longer than the EB 118, it too was powered by that 547bhp W18 lurking under the nose.
It took until September 1999 for Bugatti to shuffle the W18 to the middle with the reveal of the EB 18/3 Chiron. This time, GG's son Fabrizio was in charge of the pencil case, adjusting the shape to accommodate the 547bhp W18 in the middle of the car. It's the point where the Veyron really began to take shape, all cab-forward aggression wrapped up in a two-door coupe.

A month later, it'd morph again into the EB 18/4 concept penned not by the Giugiaros, but in-house by Jozef Kaban, credited with the final Veyron's design. Named after Bugatti's development and test driver Pierre Veyron – who'd won at Le Mans – the 18/4 originally debuted with the same W18.
But, 'the immense challenge of reliably extracting over 1,000PS', as well as managing the heat and complexity of the nat-asp W18 meant in 2000, it was downsized by two cylinders to an 8.0-litre W16. It was also turbocharged to within an inch of its life – four, don't forget – which allowed Bugatti to hit its targets. And lo, the Veyron arrived.
(And yes, around the same time, Bugatti's stablemates were toying with their own Veyron-esque creations, in the shape of the 1999 Bentley Hunaudières and 2000 Audi Rosemeyer concepts. Both featured a WR16 layout.)
Not a bad motor, that Veyron, by all accounts. Pretty quick. Quite luxurious. Bit expensive. Produced 1,001PS (987bhp) and of course, went on to very much exceed 400kmh in the Super Sport. Job done.

This delivers a huge amount of traction, not only out of bends, but also when the weather turns nasty. And despite its advancing years, the same is true now; the agile chassis is mated to a real gem of an engine – powerful but also very refined when the mood calls for a relaxing drive. This deal gets you VZ1 trim. With VZ standing for 'veloz' - which means 'fast' in Spanish - the kit list is suitably tasty for a hot SUV. Standard features include 19-inch alloys, bucket sports seats trimmed in Alcantara, a digital cockpit, heated steering and seats, full LED headlights and a range of different driving modes. And, because it's based on the more humble SEAT Ateca, the interior is well made, simply laid out, and roomy for back-seat passengers. 2025 Toyota Tacoma vs Nissan Frontier: Japanese Midsize Pickups Collide
Japanese challengers to American dominance The Ford F-Series has held the title of best-selling vehicle for more than four decades, but it was recently dethroned by the Toyota RAV4. Toyota's push against American dominance doesn't end there, though. The midsize Tacoma pickup leads its segment, but it isn't the only Japanese model in contention with Ford and Chevrolet. The Nissan Frontier managed to get an edge over the Ford Ranger last year. There's a lot to love about the 2025 Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier, but which model presents the best value? 2025 Toyota Tacoma Limited — Source: Toyota Versatility, connectivity, and affordability The Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier are outfitted for a variety of use cases, with several cab options and bed sizes to choose from. In contrast, both the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado are available in just one configuration: a crew cab with a five-foot bed. There's no single- or extended-cab body style or a longer bed available, and the Japanese midsize trucks are taking full advantage of that fact. 2025 Toyota Tacoma — Source: Toyota The 2025 Toyota Tacoma is available with a four-door double cab paired with a five-foot bed or a two-door extended cab (XtraCab) with a six-foot bed. Likewise, the Nissan Frontier is also available in two cab configurations. The King Cab features two doors and seats four passengers, while the traditional Crew Cab is a four-door configuration and seats up to five passengers. Either cab option can be paired with a five- or six-foot bed. Inside, the Tacoma gets an eight-inch touchscreen display, with higher-tier models getting upgraded to a 14-inch display. Likewise, the Nissan Frontier features an eight-inch touchscreen display, with an optional 12.3-inch screen. Both pickups feature wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility at all trim levels. Premium sound systems are available in both trucks, as is a wireless smartphone charging pad. Source: Nissan As far as pricing goes, both Japanese pickups are competitive with their American rivals. The 2025 Toyota Tacoma undercuts competitors at $31,590, while a new Nissan Frontier is available from $32,050. For comparison, the Ford Ranger starts at $33,080, and the Chevy Colorado is priced from $31,900. Performance and capability go hand-in-hand The 2025 Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier pack plenty of power that leads to rather impressive capability across their respective ranges. The former offers a bit more variety in terms of performance, though. While the Frontier comes with one powertrain across the range, the Tacoma's powertrain can vary based on the trim level and transmission. 2025 Toyota Tacoma — Source: Toyota The 2025 Toyota Tacoma is one of the few models left in the industry to offer a six-speed manual transmission, although it is limited to double-cab models. When paired with the manual transmission, the Tacoma's 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine generates 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. If power comes channeled through an eight-speed automatic transmission, expect performance to fall to 228 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque in the base SR trim. Most Tacoma models come equipped with a more powerful 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. That combination delivers 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. When properly equipped, the 2025 Toyota Tacoma can tow up to 6,500 lbs. and haul up to 1,705 lbs. Source: Nissan The Nissan Frontier offers a much simpler setup compared to the Tacoma. All Frontier models come equipped with a 3.8-liter V6 engine, producing 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. That power is channeled through a nine-speed transmission, regardless of trim level. When properly equipped, the Frontier can tow up to 7,150 lbs. and haul 1,610 lbs. Toyota Tacoma's hybrid edge It's no secret that Toyota has been giving its lineup the hybrid treatment, and the Toyota Tacoma is no exception. There are five hybrid Tacoma trims to choose from, the most affordable of which is the TRD Sport i-FORCE Max, priced from $46,320. Like in the gas-only version, the hybrid Tacoma comes equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. 2025 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter — Source: Toyota Pairing the Tacoma's four-cylinder engine with an electric motor does wonders for the midsize pickup's performance. The hybrid powertrain puts out 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, a massive improvement on paper. It does add weight, though, which means that the increase in power doesn't go as far as you'd hope. The hybrid powertrain is optional on some trim levels, but it's the sole powerhouse on the off-road Trailhunter and TRD Pro trims. Interestingly, the hybrid version of the Tacoma isn't all that efficient compared to the standard model, either. While the gas-only Tacoma is rated for 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, the hybrid Tacoma earns better fuel economy on urban streets, up to 23 mpg, but falters on the highway, earning up to 24 mpg. To top it off, the hybrid model can only tow up to 6,000 lbs., 500 lbs. less than the standard Tacoma. 2025 Nissan Frontier — Source: Nissan Final thoughts Despite neither model matching the towing specs of the Chevrolet Colorado and Ford Ranger, both the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier are giving American trucks a run for their money. One could argue that the variety of available body styles and bed sizes gives the Japanese pickups a distinct advantage over the likes of Ford and Chevy. Red Bull won't rule out another F1 driver swap with Yuki Tsunoda on shaky ground
Red Bull have already given Max Verstappen two team-mates so far this season after Liam Lawson was dropped for Yuki Tsunoda and a third is not beyond the realms of possibility Christian Horner insists it is still "early days" for Yuki Tsunoda as a Red Bull Racing driver. However, the team principal failed to rule out the possibility of another driver swap before the current Formula 1 season is out. And Red Bull have already dropped one team-mate to Max Verstappen in 2025, which is how Tsunoda got the seat in the first place. He was promoted from sister team Racing Bulls to take over from Liam Lawson, who was demoted just two rounds into the season after buckling under the pressure. Lawson didn't score a point at all for Red Bull so, on the face of it, the seven managed by Tsunoda since the swap is an improvement. But it is still nowhere near the sort of output the team needs from its second car. The last two races were particularly bracing for the Japanese racer. He crossed the line 17th in Monaco, that second car's worst Grand Prix finish of 2025 so far, including Lawson's results, before qualifying 20th and last for the Barcelona race last Sunday. Speaking afterwards, Red Bull team principal Horner was non-committal when asked if Red Bull could make another driver change before the year is out. "I think I'm going to take a leaf out of Flavio's [Briatore, Alpine boss] book and say, 'I don't want to answer it'," he laughed. But then he gave a real answer: "Look, it's early days for Yuki. He's still settling in. He's been in Q3, scored points, he's scored points from the pit lane. He's had a few incidents as well, so he has a long way to go. We'll decide. We've got plenty of time on our side." Tsunoda is out of contract at the end of the year. He has been strongly linked with a move away from the Red Bull stable having impressed with his development since debuting in the sport in 2020, but failing to land a promotion to the top team until this year – even initially overlooked in favour of Lawson despite being far more experienced. More pressure is coming the Japanese's way as a result of impressive performances from another Red Bull driver, though, Isack Hadjar is one of several rookies on the F1 grid this year and has been one of the best performing, producing consistent qualifying results which he has converted into 21 points to date for Racing Bulls. The last two races brought his best results yet, sixth place in Monaco and seventh in Spain. And Horner told French TV that he is delighted with the start the Parisian youngster has made since stepping up from Formula 2. "I think he's been the most outstanding of the rookies," the Red Bull boss said. "The expectation on him wasn't as high as he's delivered so far. He's exceeded all our expectations, he's been fast, he's been consistent. He's constantly delivered, and I think it's been a great start to his Formula 1 career. He just needs to keep that momentum running. His future, if he keeps performing as he is, is very bright."
