David Thomas, frontman of the influential bands Pere Ubu and Rocket From the Tombs, died Wednesday (April 23rd) at age 71. The news was announced via Pere Ubu's Facebook page, which noted that Thomas passed away after a 'long illness.'
Thomas formed Rocket From the Tombs in 1974 in Cleveland. Their first stint was short-lived, only lasting about a year, but they reunited in 2003 and remained active through 2017.
Following the initial breakup of Rocket From the Tombs, Thomas formed Pere Ubu, while other members of Rocket From the Tombs went on to form Dead Boys. Pere Ubu were active until 1982, and then again from 1987 until Thomas' passing.
The statement on Pere Ubu's Facebook page reads as follows:
'David Lynn Thomas, lead singer of Pere Ubu, Rocket From The Tombs and multiple solo projex, has died after a long illness.
On Wednesday, April 23 2025, he died in his home town of Brighton & Hove, with his wife and youngest step-daughter by his side. MC5 were playing on the radio. He will ultimately be returned to his home, the farm in Pennsylvania, where he insisted he was to be 'thrown in the barn.'
David Thomas and his band have been recording a new album. He knew it was to be his last. We will endeavour to continue with mixing and finalising the new album so that his last music is available to all. Aside from that, he left instruction that the work should continue to catalog all the tapes from live shows via the official bandcamp page. His autobiography was nearly completed and we will finish that for him. Pere Ubu's Patreon will continue as a community, run by communex.
We'll leave you with his own words, which sums up who he was better than we can: 'My name is David Fucking Thomas… and I'm the lead singer of the best fucking rock n roll band in the world.' (Frigo Documentary)
Long Live Pere Ubu.'
Pere Ubu's combination of post-punk, art-rock, new wave, and even industrial music has had a long-lasting influence on acts like R.E.M., Sonic Youth, Pixies, Sisters of Mercy, and more.
The band released its first album, The Modern Dance, in 1978, and has issued a total of 18 studio albums during the course of its career. As noted in Pere Ubu's statement above, Thomas and company were working on a final album that will see the light of day.
Thomas remained the only constant member of Pere Ubu throughout the years, although current bassist Michele Temple and drummer Steve Mehlman have been in the band for roughly 30 years themselves.
Rocket From the Tombs never released an album during their initial '70s run, but later released three LPs during their 21st century reunion, including 2004's Rocket Redux, which featured re-recordings of their '70s material.
Our condolences go out to David Thomas' family, friends, and bandmates during this difficult time. Revisit his music with Pere Ubu and Rocket From the Tombs below.

Martin Scorsese No Longer Watches Movies in Theaters Due to Audiences Behaving Badly

The post Martin Scorsese No Longer Watches Movies in Theaters Due to Audiences Behaving Badly appeared first on Consequence. In hardly shocking news, Martin Scorsese has said he no longer watches movies in public theaters anymore. On Peter Travers' recently launched blog, the film critic recalled a conversation he once had with the director about the inconsiderate behavior of fellow theatergoers. Referring back to their discussion, Travers wrote, 'I asked the maestro why he doesn't see movies in theaters anymore and he went all raging bull about audiences who babble on phones during the movie, leave to order snacks and vats of soda, and keep up a noise level loud enough to drown out the actors.' Travers retorted by pointing out how 'we couldn't keep our mouths shut when we were kids.' In response, Scorsese said, 'Yeah, maybe, but when we talked it was always about the movie and the fun we had chewing over the details.' It's unclear when Travers and Scorsese had this conversation, but this year's The Minecraft Movie became notorious for its rowdy audience participation. Sabrina Carpenter Hitchhikes Through Mayhem in 'Manchild' Music Video: Watch

The post Sabrina Carpenter Hitchhikes Through Mayhem in 'Manchild' Music Video: Watch appeared first on Consequence. Sabrina Carpenter has revealed the official music video for her new song, 'Manchild.' Directed by Vania Heymann and Gal Muggia, the video takes place primarily on the road in the American west. It finds Carpenter hitchhiking and ending up in a variety of scenes and situations ranging from the mundane to the absurd, with dozens of different costumes and looks to match. Get Sabrina Carpenter Tickets Here Throughout, Carpenter ends up in (or around) multiple different vehicles (like a jetski-converted car, an electric mobile chair, a shopping cart sidecar, and a car with trees growing on top), shoots pool with a shotgun, runs with a puppy from gunfire, smokes a cigarette at a gas station while her driver douses himself in gasoline, hitches a ride by roller skating and grabbing onto a massive truck, takes a bubble path with two pigs, and gets in all sorts of crazy spats with the men she encounters on the road. When it ends, she ditches her ride, sticks her thumb back up, and grabs the next available vehicle. Watch the official video below. Carpenter's 'Manchild' arrives as a standalone single after the deluxe release of her 2024 album Short n' Sweet arrived in February. The single is being pressed on a clear transparent 7-inch vinyl along with a B-side called 'inside of your head when you've just won an argument with a man.' She teased both the single and its music video earlier this week, posting a short clip of her hitchhiking with the caption, 'this one's about you!!' Carpenter is also heading on tour this summer and fall, with headlining sets to come at Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, and this weekend's Primavera Sound. GWAR Unleash New Single 'The Great Circus Train Disaster': Stream

The post GWAR Unleash New Single 'The Great Circus Train Disaster': Stream appeared first on Consequence. The intergalactic barbarians known as GWAR have unleashed a new single titled 'The Great Circus Train Disaster.' The song appears on the band's upcoming multimedia release, The Return of Gor Gor, set to arrive July 25 via Pit Records and Z2 Comics. 'The Great Circus Train Disaster' follows previous single 'Lot Lizard,' which Heavy Consequence named its Heavy Song of the Week upon its release in April. Get GWAR Tickets Here Guitarist Grodius Maximus stated of the new track, 'The song just kinda came to us one day while we were all hanging out injecting ketamine and crushed-up insects into our dick holes. We were fucked up for days as we experienced hallucinations of charred clown bodies, lobster people impaled on stalagmites, and the unholy image of our pet baby dinosaur being whored out as sexual meat to a greasy mass of scabies encrusted republicans and greased up catholic priests. When we came to, the song was fully formed. All we had to do was hit record and BOOM…'The Great Circus Train Disaster' was born.' He continued, 'Now, MTV and Def Jam Recordings are knocking down our door. Charlie XCX, Slipknot, and Garth Brooks all want to collaborate with us, and to be honest, this type of success is just a bit overwhelming. Yeah, we get it. We're amazing songwriters… Deal with it!' The new single and upcoming album are all part of GWAR's 40th anniversary celebration, which includes a current North American tour that runs through a June 21st show in Pelham, Tennessee.
